EU directive 178/2002 contains general requirements of food law.Article 18 provides for the traceability of all raw materials and ingredients which are intended for the food or animal feed production. This means that–as of 2005-manufacturers will be obliged to have a system in place which allows for the documentation of the material flow. According to the wording of article 18 of directive 178/2002:

„The traceability of food, feed, food-producing animals and any other substance intended to be, or expected to be, incorporated into afood or feed shall be established at all stages of production, processing anddistribution.“
