VIDYA VIKAS MANDAL’S FOUNDER’S DAY Vidya Vikas Mandal celebrated the 46th Founder’s Day on August 01, 2017at the Ganesh Daivajna Auditorium, G.R. Kare College of Law, Margao Goa.

Vidya Vikas Mandal was registered on 01st August 1971, to venerate the death anniversary of a renowned educationist, Shri. Bal Gangadhar Tilak.

Vidya Vikas Mandal under its umbrella has five institutions namely, Shree Damodar College of Commerce and Economics, Ramacrisna Madeva Salgaocar Higher Secondary School, Govind Ramnath Kare College of Law, Vidya Vikas Academy (CBSE) and H.M.N. Gaunekar Institute of Training and Research.

The Chief Guest for the function was Shri. Sandip Bhandare, President, Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industries.

The function commenced with an invocation prayer dance followed by the lighting of the traditional lamp at the hands of the Chief Guest, the founder members and other dignitaries. Shri. Ganesh Daivajna, President, Vidya Vikas Mandal welcomed the gathering. A short presentation was also shown on the progress of the institutions of Vidya Vikas Mandal.

On this auspicious day, five outstanding alumni of Vidya Vikas Mandal Instituions were felicitated for their remarkable contributions to the society. Staff members of VVM institutions who completed their doctorate degree were also felicitated on this occasion.

Chief Guest, Shri. Sandip Bhandare, in his address congratulated the founder members and applauded the efforts taken by the Board of Management to provide quality education to the student community at large. Shri. Madhukar Mallya, Hon. Secretary, Vidya Vikas Mandal proposed the vote of thanks. The function concluded with the singing of the National Anthem.

ALL GOA QUIZ COMPETITION Institute of Menezes Braganza, working in the field of literary and cultural aspects, regularly organises various programmes/activities for preservation and promotion of cultural heritage of the state. On the solemn occasion of the death Anniversary of Lokamanya Tilak, Institute Menezes Braganza, Panaji organised an All Goa Quiz Competition on 1st August 2017.

Mast Ryan Fernandes and Mast Ameya Jamkar represented Vidya Vikas Academy. Students from 28 schools from all over Goa participated enthusiastically. The basic motto of the competition was to knock the hidden talent of

youth around us and also make them aware of the first leader of Indian independence movement. The topic for the competition was ‘SOCIAL AND PATRIOTIC LEADERS OF INDIA’.

Quiz master Mr. Naguesh Sardessai conducted the quiz and he was assisted by Mr. Viresh Desai. While conducting a very informative quiz, he also entertained the audience and enlightened the students on various topics. It was a great exposure for the students.

MONSOON HIKE – CLASS 9 AND 10 Monsoon Hike is an outdoor activity where students get an opportunity to explore nature and feel one with it.

The students of Classes 9 and 10 were excited and looking forward for a monsoon hike. On 04th August 2017 all the students filled with the spirit of enthusiasm came prepared for the monsoon hike. 203 students along with 13 teachers and two attendants walked a distance of around 7.5 km.

They walked in the forest area from Agonda Khola to Khedem Barcem village in the Canacona Taluka. It was great fun as the rain and the clouds played Hide and Seek with our students. Towards the end of the hike there was a light shower that made the hike complete.

RAKSHABANDHAN Raksha Bandhan, the festival of celebrating joy and relationship of brothers and sisters. The Pre-Primary children celebrated Raksha Bandhan on 07th August 2017 with a special assembly.

Tr. Adlyn spoke about the festivities and significance of the festival. It was demonstrated to the students, how the sister does the Pooja and ties a rakhi around her brother’s wrist and is given sweets to eat. The brother in return gives a gift to his sister and promises to protect his sister all her life.

At the end, all the children sang a song on Raksha Bandhan. The assembly was co-ordinated by Tr. Adlyn Luis.

TALK ON VECTOR BORNE DISEASES AND NUTRITION FOR ADOLESCENTS A health talk was organised for the NCC cadets of Vidya Vikas Academy of Classes 8th and 9th by RN Miss. Stefny Pereira and NCC 3rd Officer Mr. Siddharth Faldessai on 11th of August 2017.

The topics were Prevention of Vector borne diseases and nutrition for adolescents. The talk started at 12.30pm with a welcome address by NCC cadet Miss Nadia Da Silva. She welcomed the gathering and introduced the guest speakers. The guest speaker was Mr. Krishna Panchwadkar, Health Educator of Urban Health Center Margao and Mrs. Melkiza Furtado, Nutrition Officer, South Goa, Directorate of

Health Services.

Mr. Krishna Panchwadkar did a PowerPoint presentation on various vector borne diseases like malaria, filaria, dengue, JE, Chikungunya etc, their source and modes of transmission, signs and symptoms of the diseases and treatment for the same. He elaborated on how we can prevent these diseases by simply preventing stagnation of water in our surroundings, emptying water from coconut shells, containers etc around our house. He also explained about the importance of SMP test for detection of malaria. He urged the cadets to do their bit and spread information and conduct activities to help prevent vector borne diseases.

Mrs Melkiza then gave a short presentation on Nutrition for adolescents. She explained about the physiological need in adolescents for nutritive foods. She elaborated on the various types of food groups, their role in the growth and development of the child. She gave information on various diseases affecting adolescents due to poor nutrition and how to prevent them.

The cadets were very interactive and asked various questions to the speakers and cleared their doubts.

LIBRARY DAY To Commemorate the Birth Anniversary of late Dr. Shiyali Ramamrita Ranganathan, father of Library Science, a small programme was organised on 12th August 2017, in the VVA School Library.

The Librarian, Mrs. Archana Pednekar in her welcome address highlighted the importance of Library Day. Principal, Mrs. Joble Bijoy, garlanded the portrait of Late. Dr. S. R. Ranganathan, which was followed by lighting of the traditional lamp at the hands of Principal, Mrs. Joble Bijoy, Vice-Principal, Mrs. Tania Monteiro, Librarians Mrs. Archana Pednekar, Ms. Nutan Naik and a student. NCC Cadets were present at this programme.

An exhibition of the latest arrivals of new editions of books, reference books, novels in Konkani and Hindi were displayed in the library on this auspicious day. Students, teachers and parents witnessed the exhibition.

JANMASHTAMI Janmashtami, a festival celebrated by the Hindus, commemorates the earthly arrival of Lord Krishna. To mark this occasion, a special assembly was held for the Pre Primary Students on Friday,11th August 2017.

Tr. Loreta explained the significance and celebration of the festival to the students. A small skit was enacted by the students of Class Nursery B depicting Lord Krishna’s love for eating ‘Makhan’. The students of Nursery B also danced to the music of Govinda Aala Re.

The highlight of the programme was the breaking of the ‘Dahi Handi’ by the little ones. The programme was thoroughly enjoyed by the children.

INDEPENDENCE DAY 15th August is a historical and a significant day for the Indian’s. On this day in the year 1947, India was liberated from the British rule.

Vidya Vikas Academy celebrated India’s 71st Independence day in the school campus with great fervour. The National flag was unfurled by the Principal, Mrs. Joble Bijoy followed by the singing of the National Anthem. The Principal then addressed the gathering. A cultural programme was organised which comprised of a Hindi and a English speech, patriotic songs and dances performed by the students of Classes 5 and 6.

Students of the NCC Unit were presented certificates for their excellent performance at the NCC camp and ‘A’ certificate examination. Rhyv Cota was also awarded his prize which he won at the an All Goa Singing Competition. He was accompanied by Keegan Barretto on the guitar.

The Pre-Primary Section celebrated Independence Day too with a special programme on 14th August 2017. A sandwich making activity was organised for the students.

The display board were decorated with National Symbols. The programme concluded with distribution of sweets.

SWIMMING COMPETITION – TALUKA LEVEL Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs organized a swimming competition at taluka level in Fatorda swimming pool on 16th August 2017. U-14 and U-17 boys and girls participated in the competition.

WORLD PHOTOGRAPHY DAY

‘A photograph has the power to tell stories, inspire generations and create a positive impact in life.’

19th of August is observed as World Photography Day. Vidya Vikas Academy organized a special assembly for the students of Class 6 to celebrate this occasion.

This special assembly was very informative as students presented information on the History of Camera and Photography, Types of Photography, Renowned photographers of India and tips on clicking safe selfie. A PowerPoint presentation illustrated the topics and enlightened the students about the importance of photographs and photography.

Photographs clicked by the students of Vidya Vikas Academy were also displayed. At the end students had great time clicking selfie as a part of World Photography Day.

WORLD HUMANITARIAN DAY

World Humanitarian Day is a day dedicated to recognize humanitarian personnel and those who have lost their lives working for humanitarian causes. It is held every year on 19th August to pay tribute to aid workers who risks their lives in humanitarian services and to rally support for people affected by crisis around the world.

A special assembly was conducted by students of Class 10C of Vidya Vikas Academy on account of this day. The students highlighted the importance of the day followed by a prayer and a speech. A small skit was performed by the students. They also quoted some quotes on wisdom and concluded the assembly with a song.

The objective of celebrating this day was to make the students aware of this day and also to highlight the significance of humanity in today’s world,

ACTIVITY FOR AUGUST – CLASS 9 AND 10 – BATTLE OF BOOKS – QUIZ Battle of books, a book quiz, was organised for classes 9 and 10. It was the co-curricular activity for the month of August.

The objective of the quiz was to create an interest among the students to the world of classics and to inculcate in them the habit of reading.

A written round was conducted for all the students of classes 9 and 10 and the top 3 scorers represented their classes in the interclass quiz competition which was held on 19th August 2017.

The students displayed a lot of enthusiasm and awareness of the world of literature. Zara Dias, Sharlet Chowalloor and Karah Fernandes of Class 10 B emerged as the winners.

SPELL-O-CHECK – ACTIVITY AUGUST 2017 – CLASSES 6 TO 8 The Spell-O-Check Activity (English Language) was held in the month of August 2017, for the students of Classes 6 to 8. The participants were informed that they would be tested on the words learnt and each class level.

This activity involved two rounds. They were as follows:- 1) Recognizing words from their phonetics and spelling them correctly— Phonetic round. 2) Unscramble the letters, using the clue given and spell the word correctly— Scrambled words.

All the participants were excited, enthusiastic and eagerly took part in the competition. It certainly encouraged the children to catch up on their reading and spellings.

SNAKE SHOW “Today’s students are tomorrow’s future.”

A live demonstration of poisonous and non-poisonous snakes was held at VVA on 22nd August 2017. The objective of this activity was to instil in the students, a love for nature and wildlife. Mr. Amrut S. Singh, the President of Animal Rescue Squad enlightened the pupils with a PowerPoint presentation and a live demonstration of poisonous and non -poisonous snakes, whereby students were given the opportunity to touch the snakes to overcome their fear of reptiles.

Pupils from Pre-Primary to Class 12 were delighted to see the snakes of various types. They were able to identify between the Venomous and the Non-Venomous snakes and their habitat. Overall, it was a beautiful experience for the teachers and the students.

PAINTING COMPETITION On the occasion of 70th anniversary of India’s independence, students of Vidya Vikas Academy conducted a painting competition on 15th August 2017.

The objective of the competition was to inculcate patriotic feelings and respect for our freedom fighters through drawing and painting.

Students of Classes 7 to 10 participated enthusiastically in this activity. A special word of praise to the students of Class 9A for their wonderful contribution. The best paintings from every class were displayed on soft boards.

KONKANI STORY TELLING COMPETITION Students of Vidya Vikas Academy took part in a Konkani Story Telling Competition organised by Konkani Bhasha Mandal in the month of August 2017. The first round of the competition was conducted at school level in all the participating schools and two best students entries were to be chosen and sent for the next level which was held at Konkani Bhavan, Margao.

Altogether 43 students from our school participated at the school level and the following students were selected and sent for the next level: Classes 1 to 4 Nia Fernandes Amogh Shanbhag Classes 5 to 7 Manmayi Lotlikar Veda Naik Classes 8to 10 Ananya Bhembre Sanika Naik

Manmayi Lotliker won the 1st prize and Ananya Bhembre won the 3rd prize in their respective categories.

The competition gave an opportunity to children to exhibit their talent of story – telling and gave them a good exposure of public speaking, thereby boosting their confidence.

GANESH CHATURTHI Ganesha Charturthi is the Hindu festival that reveres Lord Ganesha. The festival is marked with installation of Ganesha clay idols privately in homes, or publicly on elaborate pandals.

Ganesha Charturthi festival was celebrated with great gaiety and excitement by the pupils of the Pre-Primary section of Vidya Vikas Academy on August 23, 2017.

The celebrations commenced with the installation of Ganesha idol in the school hall. A story was enacted of Lord Ganesha by the pupils of Class Nursery. The Aarti was performed with the chanting of the Bhajan and also a dance performance by the pupils of Sr. Kg.

ENGLISH POEM RECITATION – ACTIVITY AUGUST 2017 – CLASSES 1 TO 5 English Poem Recitation was held at the VVA School Hall on 23rd August 2017. Oh! What a beautiful way to express poetry through words and actions.

As we all know, poetry is meant for sheer enjoyment. Beauty is the realm of the poetry. With a lot of zeal and enthusiasm poetry was expressed through thoughts, words, feelings, rhyme and rhythm. The Preliminary round was conducted in the classroom and 5 best students were selected for the final round. They recited poems on various topics, such as: on Nature, Mother, Unity in Diversity, Environment… etc.

The children had an opportunity to exhibit their talent and confidence, which was well appreciated by the audience.

NATIONAL SPORTS DAY The National Sports Day in India is celebrated on 29th August every year. This day marks the birth anniversary of Dhyan Chand, the hockey player who won 3 Olympic gold medals for India in the years 1928, 1932 and 1936. He scored over 400 goals in his career, from 1926 to 1948. Students of Vidya Vikas Academy observed this day on 31st August. A special assembly was conducted by students of Classes 8 A, B and C.

A brief information about Dhyan Chand and his achievements was read by some students, which was followed by a short documentary on his achievements. Vice Principal, Mrs. Tania Monteiro addressed the students at the end of the Assembly.

The Special Assembly was coordinated by teachers: Balika Phaldesai, Siddharth Faldessai and Wilma Alphonso.

PSYCH-ED QUIZ CONTEST

PSYCH-ED – A national level Psychology Quiz was organized under the guidance and leadership of Dr. Samir Parikh, Chairperson – Fortis National Mental Health Program, Fortis Healthcare.

PSYCH-ED is a mega event designed to provide students a unique platform to hone and test their knowledge and to battle with the best in the country. The students from across the country tested their IQ in the knowledge of psychology and how it applies to everyday life.

A total of 460 schools from all over India participated in the quiz. Dionisio Riberio, Querida Coutinho and Faizah Khan represented Vidya Vikas Academy.

The first round of the quiz was an online round, held on August 4, 2017. Participants were required to log in from a single computer system within the school premises between 10:00 a.m -12:00 p.m. The school nominated one team each, comprising of 3 students from Class 10 and above.

CAREER GUIDANCE TALK On 10th August, 2017 students of Class XII attended a career guidance talk conducted by NIITE Group of Institutions. Mr Dilip Rao, Department of Counselling and Student Welfare from NITTE University addressed the students.

He introduced them to the different careers choices which one can opt for in the field of science. The session also made the students aware of the future scope and opportunities worldwide. The overall session was informative and interesting.

“DHAI AKHAR” – LETTER WRITING CAMPAIGN

Students of Senior Secondary participated in the letter writing competition under the ‘Dhai Akhar Letter Writing Campaign’ which was held on August 15, 2017. The theme of the campaign was “Dear Bapu (Mahatma Gandhi), you inspire me”.

The letter was to be written in English or Hindi or any other local language on an Inland Letter Card in 500 words or A4 size paper in 1000 words. The students were provided with Inland letter cards. This campaign made students to rethink about our past and the freedom struggle undertaken by ‘Mahatma Gandhi’. This campaign was open to all age groups. The letters were posted in specially designated letter box at Margao Railway Station.

MONOLOGUE COMPETITION – 1ST PLACE Shree Damodar Higher Secondary School of Science – Margao organised its legendary annual Inter-Higher Secondary Monologue Competition on 18th August 2017. The competition was held in two languages: Konkani and Marathi respectively.

Eleven institutes all over Goa competed against one another vehemently to uplift the trophies in respected categories. It gave the participants an opportunity to showcase their dramatic and oratory skills.

Shanaya S. Phal Desai from Class 11 represented Vidya Vikas Academy and won the first place in the Konkani category. She captivated the attention and evoked emotions of the audience throughout her performance.

RANGOLI COMPETITION Rangoli is one of the enjoyable forms of art that children of all age groups can be engaged in. A Rangoli competition was organised by Senior Secondary section of Vidya Vikas Academy for the students of Class XI on 22nd August 2017 to mark the celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi.

The corridor was decked up with beautiful creative designs by the students. The creative expression of art through colours was a feast to the eyes. The students were asked to maintain a standard size of 60 x 60 cm and the duration allotted was one hour and thirty minutes. Tr. Hema Cacodcar and Tr. Kelly Fernandes were the judges for the same. They were pleased with the student’s active participation.

TREE PLANTATION DRIVE Students of Vidya Vikas Academy along with the Staff members undertook a tree plantation drive at Barcaim, Quepem taluka on 12th and 23rd August 2017. 87 students from Vidya Vikas Academy successfully planted eight hundred saplings which were procured from Goa’s Forest Department. Saplings included different species of plants like Assan (Pterocarpus maisupium), Sathon (Alstoni scholaris), Karanj (Pongamia pinnata), Mahagony (Switenia mahagony), and Goting (Terminilia bellerica). This activity gave students an experience to be in harmony with nature and also gave them an exposure to study different types of plant species.

This programme was coordinated by Sir Siddharth Faldessai and Sir Bhushan Sail.

WORLD PHOTOGRAPHY DAY On the occasion of World Photography Day, activities like Photography Contest, Photo Exhibition and a talk on the topic “Creative Photography‘’ was conducted by the Sr. Secondary Section of Vidya Vikas Academy.

Special Assembly and Talk On 19nd August 2017, students of Class XI and XII celebrated World Photography Day. The main motive of conducting a assembly was to educate the students about the history of World Photography Day and its significance. A short speech on “World of Photography Day” was presented to enlighten the students. Later an informative documentary was shown on the Evolution of Camera Technology.

Mr. Brijesh Kakodkar – a renowned photographer and a film maker was invited as a guest speaker and the judge for the photography contest. Mr. Brijesh Kakodkar has specialized in fashion photography. He is a co-founder and owner of Narad films. He is well trained in Theatre, Arts and Dance and also holds a black belt in Taekwondo. In his talk he emphasized more about creative photography and methods of clicking good images with appropriate angles. He also gave important tips to follow while clicking pictures. He was presented with memento as a token of appreciation.

Photography Contest The contest was held in three categories, Category A – Classes 5 – 7, Category B – Classes 8-12 and Category C – Staff of VVA (teaching and Non-Teaching staff).

59 students and staff members actively participated in the contest. The contest was arranged to bring out the hidden talent of photography in the students and staff. The theme was ‘Splash of Colours’.

The photographs were exhibited so that the students and staff could feast their eyes on the wonderful clicks. Mr. Brijesh judged the photographs based on originality, uniqueness of concept, appropriateness to the theme, clarity of expression and creativity.
