THE SAS STUDENT ADVOCATE St. Aloysius School November 2018 Issue 4 of 2018-19/24 Grades 5-8 Prayer for November -AR 5th Dear Most Gracious God, Please help me always to find hope and grace in You and in those around me. Also, help me and my classmates plus my fami- ly to not get sick or hurt. Thank you for the food on my table, the air in my home, the light you put in me and the everlasting love You bring unto me. For this Thanksgiving may we be compas- sionate and kind to our neighbors, community, and friends. –Amen Technology Has Been Changing the World… -JL 8th Just about every area of our lives has been changed by technolo- gy in just the last 20 years. This speedy invasion of tech into our lives has brought trust and distrust. Our use of it has caused sor- row and bliss. Our dependence on it challenges the balancing of our constructive use of time. Our parents never grew up with it, as we have today. So much good has come from technology and yet also some bad. The following article is written about one company which has became very successful in technology. The year is 2005; three employees from PayPal named Chad Hurley, Jawed Karim, and Steve Chen were about to create their magnum opus. On Valentine’s Day, the website, YouTube, was born. To test that the website ran properly, Karim uploaded the first video on April 23rd called “me at the zoo” filmed at the San Diego Zoo. During 2006, YouTube was one of the fastest growing websites on the Internet. It was rated the fifth fastest growing website on the Internet. It averaged over 20 million visitors every month. Twelve through seventeen year olds were its primary audience. Eventually, YouTube entered into a marketing and advertising partnership with NBC in June 2006. Google noticed YouTube’s insane rise to popularity and pur- chased the company on November 13, 2006 for $1.65 billion in stock. It is estimated that YouTube had as much bandwidth as the In- ternet itself. Even to this day, YouTube is the single largest video streaming site to ever be searched on the Internet. It is over a dec- ade old and the Internet wouldn’t be the same without it. Here’s an example of why we like it. This summer our air condi- tioner went out. My Dad went to the attic to see what was wrong. He came back with it’s ID, serial #, etc. Then he googled how to fix it. The video of how to fix our AC was on You Tube. Within an hour we had cool air again. To be continued… https://www.engadget.com/2016/11/10/the-history-of-youtube/ Pre-K News -IG 5th Have you ever wondered What Pre-Kers are up to? You can always see your parents reading the daily paper so, why aren't any of the SAS students picking up the school pa-per. Well, they might not care about newspapers entirely. So, you could say newspaper as a whole is a complete waste of time. But I want whoever reads this to tell everyone the importance of what journalists do. They are the ones who write the stories that uncov-er criminals and those who lie and manipulate the public. Sure, sometimes we may not be getting all the true facts, but I have hope. So, I beg you to start reading the newspaper or even watch the news on TV (with your parents’ approval). We are the next generation to make an impact on our world. We must be informed and it’s not too early to start. Science Project -AH 8th “Although aluminum is the most abundant metal in the earth's crust, it is never found free in nature. All of the earth's aluminum has combined with other elements to form compounds. Two of the most common compounds are alum, such as potassium aluminum sulfate, and aluminum oxide. About 8.2% of the earth's crust is composed of aluminum. Scientists suspected than an unknown metal existed in alum as early as 1787, but they did not have a way to extract it until 1825. Hans Christian Oersted, a Danish chemist, was the first to produce tiny amounts of aluminum. Two years later, Friedrich Wöhler, a German chemist, developed a different way to obtain aluminum. Today, aluminum is used in a wide variety of products: cans, foils and kitchen utensils, as well as parts of airplanes, rockets and other items that require a strong, light material. It can be deposited on the surface of glass to make mirrors, where a thin layer of aluminum oxide quickly forms that acts as a protective coating. Aluminum oxide is also used to make synthetic rubies and sapphires for lasers.” https://education.jlab.org/itselemental/ele013.html Vocabulary Words bal-der-dash n nonsense cal-um-ny n the act of uttering false charges or misrepresenta-tions maliciously calculated to damage another’s reputation o-paque-ness n 1. not pervious to radiant energy esp. light 2. hard to understand or explain op-u-lence n 1. wealth, affluence 2. abundance, profusion rhet-o-ric n the art of speaking or writing effectively; the study of principles and rules of composition formulated by critics of ancient times sur-veil-lance n to watch over, a close watch kept over someone or something

Bad Eyesight Through the Ages -ET 8th What did people do a long time ago, when they couldn’t see clearly? “First, the prevalence of human eyesight issues has changed over time. ‘As long as primates have been around, there's probably been myopia,’ says Dr. Ivan Schwab, a professor of ophthalmology at the University of California, Davis. But he says the rates of myopia have skyrocketed over the past three centuries.” Glasses for nearsightedness sprang up in the 15th century. More and more people were affected by nearsighted-ness as the rate of literacy increased rapidly. Though genes and nutrition play a part, the real reason is because of increased reading and focusing on things close up. Forty percent of the world’s population is nearsighted, while 5-10% of the population is farsighted. https://www.npr.org/sections/healthshots/2016/07/07/484835077/ what-did-nearsighted-humans-do-before-glasses

LSU Baseball Interview Part 1 - ML 8th This article features LSU Baseball Head Coach Paul Mainieri I was able to be on the field and in the dugout to talk to Coach Mainieri and four of the players before the scrimmage versus UNO on October 14th. Here’s what Coach Mainieri had to say: Q: How do you feel about the abilities of the pitching and catching staffs compared to last season? A: “Last year, at times our pitching staff did really great, and at times they struggled. Our catching was the same way. And so consequently, because it was so inconsistent, we were not able to make it to Omaha, which is what we typically expect of our team. This year, I believe that our pitching has more depth, and the quality of our catching is better. I think you’re going to see the results of that, and we will be a contender to get to Omaha and win the National Championship.” Q: What is your go-to strategy for replacing an injured player? Is it talent or experience? A: “When you have an injured player, you have a limited roster. It’s not like a major league team where they can pick up a player from AAA or AA. We only have a certain amount of players, so you have to have very versatile players as backups because if one of your best players is injured, you’re not going to replace him with a player just as good; if he were just as good, he’d have already been in the starting lineup. What you want is enough op-tions with versatility to be able to fill in, so you want the most tal-ented player. You’d like for him to be experienced, but you can't always have everything, so I would say that talent would be more important than experience.”

LSU and The Georgia Upset -NNP 5th LSU gets the ball first and scores a field goal. Georgia goes to the ten yard line and can score or make a field goal. They fake the field goal but are unable score. We get the ball back and score a touchdown. The next thing I know, we are up 16-0. At the end of

the game, LSU wins! Here's Sophia Montalbano’s take on it.

Q: How did you feel before the game?

A: I felt pretty confident we would win.

Q: How did you feel when we were up 16-0?

A: I was very excited and thought we had a chance. Q: What did you think of Joe Burrow? A: I thought he had improved. He had protected the ball and threw better this game. Personally, I think LSU was better than ever. I hope they keep it up. Geaux Tigers and ‘Beat Bama’! Coffee vs Tea -MC 5th After water, coffee and tea are probably the most consumed drinks for adults but they do have pros and cons. Both of them have caffeine in them, and most people add sweetener to them both. You can order them both at cafes, restaurants, or just about any eating place. https://www.fda.gov/ Fun Facts About Taylor Swift -AH 8th Taylor Swift has already earned what would be to most people more than a lifetime of memories and awards and she will only be 29 this Dec. 13. She took vocal and acting les-sons and wanted to act on Broadway. Her grandmother was an opera singer. Her family moved to Tennessee to help her with her country music career. Her inspiration is Shania Twain, a Canadi-an singer and songwriter. Her first song was a country song called Lucky One. She modeled for Abercrombie and Fitch and she acted in an episode of CSI. She has sold more than 40 million albums. The list goes on... https://www.biography.com/people/taylor-swift-369608

Coca Cola - AMC 5th

Coca Cola, one of the oldest soft drinks in America. The only World Of Coca-Cola, a museum showcasing the history of the Coca-Cola Company, is in Atlanta, Georgia. Coca Cola was first introduced May 8th 1886. It was invented in the late 19th Centu-ry. There were only two people in the world who knew the Secret Formula of the Coke. They eventually died but the recipe has been continually passed down through their relatives. Coke was also intended to be a medicine, and its original color was green. One of the ingredients in the original formula made the color of coke green. Then in 1924, the secret formula for coke was changed which made the color become brown. There have been a lot of attempts to steal the secret formula over the years. All of them were failures. Everyone who tried to steal the formula was sent to jail. There is only one question about coke. What makes a Coke a Coke?

Interesting Facts About Cats - PA 8th If you love cats, the following are a few facts that you may not have known about them. A group of cats is called a clowder. The largest cat ever recorded weighed about 50 pounds. House cats are more vocal than feral cats. Cats can fit through a space if their head can fit through it. The oldest cat who ever lived was named Creme Puff and lived to be 38 years old. The first cat video on youtube was posted in 2005. Cats have starred in films since the 1800s. Cats truly do love their owners and they also recognize them by touch, smell, and sound. I think there are even more in-teresting facts about cats that we still need to learn.

Located at 6251 Perkins Rd. in Baton Rouge, they have enchiladas, fajitas, quesadillas, and more! Their outstand-ing salsa is not too spicy and not too bland. Fabulous Fashion News! -AWK 5th Today, on Fabulous Fashion News, we will be discussing the new uniforms for Pre-K and Kindergarten students. In the past, primarily the ID patches on our St. Aloysius uniforms have been changed. This year, a new uniform is an option for the Pre-K and Kindergarten students in addition to their jumpers For 1st through 5th graders, the girls have the jumpers, but are allowed to wear the shorts too; the boys can wear the shorts, shirts, and belts. But the 6th through 8th grade girls get too wear skirts! We younger girls all love the jumpers but we look forward to wearing the skirts in 6th grade. The boys’ uniforms stay the same.

What to Do with Bama? -NP 5th College Football is the same every year. Alabama wins every single game that they play. They certainly have had a winning season every year of my life. 2018 is Coach Nick Saban’s twelfth year and only 2007, his first season, was a losing season (7-6). Under Saban, Bama has won three BCS Championships and two College Football Championships (playoffs). Clemson won the 2016 CFC (35-31). Alabama can be beat, though; the players make the difference. LSU can do it. Go Tigers!!! https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/alabama/index.html

SAS Sports -JS 7th Some of the current SAS sports in season right now are Football, Swimming, and Cross Country. The Swim Team has had four Swim Meets. One swimmer, Ella Wall, stated that, “The swim meets are full of ups and downs, but we all try our best. With city meet right around the corner I am sure our team will do fine.” The SAS 7th and 8th grade Football Team so far has had an un-defeated season. 7th Grade Girls’ Basketball -AS 7th Tonight, Nov 1, is the night for the seventh grade playoff game, SAS vs. St. George. Addie Carmouche, a SAS player, reports that her team has won all their games except for two. Her favorite part of playing is winning and getting the team amped up. “Our team has eight players and we are very thankful for our coaches, Don and Andre”, and she says she makes up her height by being more aggressive and energetic. Asked to define basketball in one word, she replied, “Determination!”
