About SASSCAL
Angola, Botswana, Namibia, South Africa,Zambia and Germany established in 2010 theSouthern African Science Service Centre forClimate Change and Adaptive Land Management(SASSCAL) in response to the challenges ofglobal change. The partner countries followedthe proposal of the Bali Action Plan of theUNFCCC (at COP13) to have a regional focuswhen addressing climate change, and compliedwith the endorsement by the African Union (8thSession, Addis Ababa) to develop fullyoperational regional climate centres in Africa.
The objective of SASSCAL is to conduct problem-oriented research in the area of adaptation toclimate change and sustainable landmanagement, to provide evidence-based advicefor decision-makers and to contribute to thecreation of a knowledge-based society throughacademic and non-academic capacitydevelopment.
SASSCAL is represented in the five Africanpartner countries, Angola, Botswana, Namibia,South Africa and Zambia, with a RegionalSecretariat in Windhoek, Namibia.
The German Federal Ministry of Education andResearch (BMBF) provided seed funding andearmarked a total contribution of Euro 50million, with an emphasis on research andcapacity development in the five thematic areas:agriculture, biodiversity, climate, forestry andwater.
