I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our sponsors who continue to support us.
A sincere thanks is also due to the hardworking volunteers, including the stewards and the St Patrick’s Festival Committee which has been planning the Festival since July 2015!
They give their free time to make this event special for Luton; without their commitment the Festival would not be possible.
We hope the community as a whole will come along and enjoy the different events taking place throughout the week.
Slainte, have a great Festival and a Happy St Patrick’s Day to each and every one of you!

A Brief review of the year!!
Lee MatthewsIt’s all systems go for Lee Matthews in 2016, having released his brand new album “It’s A Great Day To Be Alive” and his latest video for his new self-penned single “The Irish Way” On the Sharpe music label last month. The album reached #1 on the Irish country download charts on its first few days of release in December. Lee’s previous two singles also hit the number one spot on the download charts, paving the way for this much-anticipated twelve track CD. There are four number one singles already on the album “Cotton Eye Joe”, “It’s A Great Day To Be Alive”, “Buy Me A Boat” and “Girl Next Door” and some great reworked classics including “Bang On The Ear”, “If Tomorrow Never Comes” and “Here I Go Again”. Lee’s version of the single “It’s A Great Day To Be Alive” opened a new door for the singer-songwriter when he filmed the video in Florida USA. After the success of his double award winning smash hit “Cotton Eye Joe” and its very colourful video the singer said: “I wanted to do something different for the fans so we decided to shoot the next video in America. I am glad we did as it’s been getting loads of exposure on all the country TV channels on Sky.” Ireland’s TV3 also featured it during his recent appearance on The 7 O’clock Show.
Lee’s superbly crafted debut album “A Little Bitty Country” was also a #1 Hit on the Irish Country download chart and the young singer-songwriter is in top spirits, particularly as four of his eight

number one singles were written by himself. Self-penned songs from the album like “That Country Girl” and “There’s Irish In Our Eyes” are filling dance floors across the country and it’s hard to believe that it is just two years since Lee burst onto the scene with the massive debut single “Sadie’s Got Her new Dress On” and has never looked back.
Lee has plenty of reason to celebrate. Not only did the talented singer-songwriter scoop the award for Best New Band last year at the prestigious Sunday World Country Music Awards in Dublin, but he also scooped two separate Song of the Year awards for his re-write of the number one smash hit “Cotton Eye Joe.” Last year couldn’t have been better for Lee and his success was cemented when he chalked up his eighth #1 single. He also undertook a hugely successful 20-date festival tour that in tandem with his regular dance dates, took him to the major venues throughout the country were huge crowds were the order of the day. With a busy diary ahead and many of Ireland’s foremost festivals booking Lee for 2016, he is certainly on the crest of a wave, having just been confirmed for the Salardu Country Rock Festival in Spain this August and the St. Patrick’s Festival Luton in March. The future certainly looks bright for the young country star after winning New Male Vocalist of the Year, Best New Band 2015 and Single of the Year twice. Lee’s band includes some of the most experienced musicians in the province with high-quality production that embraces state-of-the-art lighting and sound. Lee is certainly one of the Ireland’s top country stars and his new album and single released on the Sharpe Music label this week will provide further compelling evidence of this. 19
The Good, The Bad and The Ginger
Live Entertainment
THE BAND
The Good The Bad and The Ginger were born out of the band Folkin Hell. The band have toured internationally, playing for some of the world’s most rich and famous - counting the likes of Sean Parker, Piers Morgan, Bob Geldof and Sting as their fans and sharing the Stage with Mark Ronson - the band are in demand for exclusive gigs.
Having toured with Paddy Casey and The Wolfe Tones along with Jools Holland at Kew Gardens, the band have some amazing venues under their belt.
The band are split into three sections - hence the name choice!
THE GOOD
James Lynott - All Everything Champion Banjo player from Kingsbury - James has been playing the Banjo from a young age and was adopted by the older members of the band and dragged along to every session and gig possible before finally agreeing to
20
Live Entertainment
join the new line-up due to his nifty finger work! As the youngest member of the band, James is under pressure to keep up on nights out and is the oldest ‘15 year old’ ever.
Cherry de Lacy - Vocals and Fiddle. Cherry has been playing the Fiddle and Banjo from a very young age and was also an original member of Folkin Hell, performing alongside Malachy de Lacy. Cherry is most definitely the Good and after 4 years’ managing THE BIBLECODE SUNDAY’S to still be alive and kicking is proof of just how good. Cherry is well and truly the baby-sitter.
THE BAD
Paul Fitzgerald - Guitarist and Singer. Paul used to play with The Reels but after leaving joined TGTB&TG. Paul brings a modern element to the band and is the youngest member.
John Barrett - Drummer from Cork. John looks good but he’s certainly Bad! As the drummer for the band STERANKO, John knows no limits. John likes to be fed at gigs and is always on the look-out for the cake stand.
Tuppy Clarke - Legend. Tuppy is an original Folkin Hell member and notorious for his football skills. Tuppy’s got a huge fan-base and his name says it all. Tuppy is known for falling off the stage, especially during his solos. Tuppy joins on Bass.
THE GINGER’S
Joe Moran - No introduction needed. Lead vocals, guitar and whistles. Joe was an original member of THE BIBLECODE SUNDAY’S as well as a founding member of SLAINTE. Joe has numerous All-Ireland titles in drinking and partying along with a couple for his ‘instruments’. Known to go missing at nearly every gig and lose his temper with everyone, Joe is by far the life and soul of the band.
Kieron Fitzgerald - Allo Allo Allo! Kieron or RON as we like to call him is our newest Bass Player in the band joining Tuppy as a twin - but with hair! Kieron claims to have a different surname but we don’t believe him - he’s Paul Fitzy’s cousin! Known for his love of dancing with Dogs, Kieron tries not to move on stage, creating an illusion of a statue - watch him and see! 21
The Cunninghams
Live Entertainment
Ashline and Michael come from Irelands best known and most gifted Sean Nos dancing family “The Cunninghams” from Cashel, Connemara,Galway, Ireland. The family of 5 have appeared on the biggest TV shows in Ireland and further afield. They have toured in many countries, including Japan and Korea along side the former President of Ireland, Mary McAleese’s invitation. They have shared the stage with Irelands best known artists including Altan, Frankie Gavin, Teada and the Chieftains but to mention a few. They have won numerous All Ireland Sean Nos dancing titles. The Cunningham Family are on a journey, taking the world by storm with their unique take on Sean-nos dancing. Wanting to keep their tradition alive, the family of five produced their own show called ‘Fuaim Chonamara’ and ‘Atlantic Steps’ and took to the road, started by touring all of Ireland, then went on to perform it in Scotland and many times in America. Their show is about reviving one of Irelands oldest dance forms and transforming it into a wonderful display of dance style, skill and athleticism. Concentrating on the authentic and most traditional aspects of Irish Culture the performances showcase the roots and origins of Irish Dance, celebrating elements of the dancing style. Sean-nos dancing which started as a pastime for the Cunningham siblings after being handed down the tradition from their grandparents in the days of house to house dancing is now their number one passion.
22
Devines
Live Entertainment
John, Joe and Caz Devine are three members of the same musical Family, with roots firmly planted in the Irish musical tradition, playing traditional Irish dance music mixed with original and contemporary arrangements of Irish songs, on an inspired mix of instruments, including the Uilleann Pipes, Banjo and Saxophone.
Devines have been touring since 2011 and made history when they were among the first musicians to ever perform Irish music at a Royal Reception in Buckingham Palace. They have produced three studio albums and an EP since conception in 2009. Their next album is due out in summer 2016 with a major tour planned for autumn 2016.
They are joined today by their good Friend, the internationallyrenowned, All-Ireland Champion and Button Box Virtuoso, Luton’s own Eugene Teevan.
Search ‘Devines’ on Facebook or visit www.johndevinemusic.com for more information.

An Old Castle
Literacy Corner
There stands a castle yonder at the foot of an Irish green hill. How stately it looks, and oh! so still.
In ancient times did it stand so still, or did it shake with fear, at the sound of gunfire drawing near? Or did it protect its people as aKnight would his maid?
If only the old castle could speak! What strange tales it could tell,of love and of war. Of heroes great and tall, Like Sarsfield, Emmit and O’Brien, Who were filled with a burning desire.
Alas! There it stands, A shell of its former glory, Its secrets shrouded in the mists of time.
Written by Marguerite Chishti
The Winter CowAs I go with my father to milk the winter cow, our way is lit by a pale, watery November moon. Going through a gap in the field where the cows gather to spend the night, we are met by long shadows cast by the fir trees across the grass, now resplendent in its new silver coat; the first frost of the winter.
High in the trees the crows nestle, their fluttering audible. Far below them the domain of the foxes, now silent in their dens. In the hedges small animals rustle and the fruit of the season of plenty has withered on the bushes as man and nature anticipate the coming winter.
Leaving the winter cow to her quiet world, her breath visible on the cold night air, we make our way home, guided by the distant beacon of light from the kitchen.
Arriving home, leaving behind the sinister half-light and the sounds of the night, we enter the kitchen and are bathed in its brightness, warmth and domestic sound, our world.

Written by Pádraig de Brún
Tháinig long ó Valparaiso, Scaoileadh téad a seol sa chuan, Chuir a hainm dom i gcuimhne Ríocht na Gréine, Tír na mBua.
“Gluais,’ ar sí, ‘ar thuras fada, Liom ó scamall is ó cheo, Tá fé shleasaibh gorm Andes Cathair scáfar, glé mar sheod.”
Bhíos óg is ní imeoinnse, Am an dóchais, tus mo shaoil, Chreideas fós go raibh i ndán dom Iontaisí na ndán ‘s na scéal.
Ghluais an long thar lintibh mara, Fad ó shin is a crann mar ór, Scríobh a scéal ar phár na hoíche, Ard i rian na réaltean mór.
Fillfidh sí aris chugam áfach; Chífead cathair bhán fén sléibh, Le hais mara na síochána – Creidim fós beagnach, a Dhé.
A ship arrived from Valparaiso, Dropped its anchor in the bay,Her name reminded me of kingdoms, Sunlit countries far away.
Come along with me she whispered, far from cloud and mist for you’ll, find beneath the Andes Mountains, an awesome city – bright as a jewel.
But I was young and would not wander, With hope and youth I chose instead, The promises of verse and fable, From the wondrous books I read.
The ship sailed off into the vapour, Shining like gold its mast so bright, It wrote its story on the parchment, High amidst the stars that night.
She will return to me, however, The white city, I still conceive, That by the sea of peace eternal, I too shall be, if I believe.
