I don’t know whether my favorite part was staying in the five-star hotel, eating a steak dinner, riding roller coasters at Fiesta Texas, or meeting Shamu at SeaWorld. I can definitively say that it wasn’t the eight-hour drive from Oklahoma City to San Antonio where we all got to know each other a little bit better. Seven games of MASH and two bathroom breaks later, we discovered Tiffany likes to dance (exuberantly with her arms), Teresa likes to sleep (with her eyes partially open), Vilay likes to talk on her phone and Hoang likes to listen to his Ipod. SEPTEMBERBIRTHDAYS

Something Great Every Dayby Orlando Hernandez

Going to San Antonio for the first time was a great experience for me. Thedrive was long; but, it gave me a change to bond with my friends. Arriving atthe Marriot on the Riverwalk made the long ride all worth it. I couldn’t be-lieve we were going to stay here! I wanted to look around and see what allthe hotel had to offer; but, I realized I didn’t have my luggage. After tenminutes of looking everywhere for it, Coach Moe found it on his van.

Every day we were there I went to the mall attached to the hotel twice. Inever got sick of going there because they had so many great stores. I spent$60 total.

For dinner the first night I had broiled chicken with Spanish rice and beans. It was the best chicken I’ve ever had. The waiters had miniature bottles ofketchup, steak sauce and mayo and everyone was collecting them. Afterdinner everyone went to the gym, hot tub and swimming pool. That night wegathered in one room and watched The Longest Yard. Everyone thought itwas really funny.

Wednesday we were off to SeaWorld. The first thing I did was watch the4-D movie. It wasn’t good; but, the glasses made it cool. I rode the Steel Eeland it was the scariest ride I rode on the entire trip. After it was over I didn’tfeel very good. Everyone went for a second ride but I decided not to. So Izyand I looked around awhile and when we came back we couldn’t find ourUB friends; so we spent the whole day walking around trying to find them. That night we went to Landry’s. I had jumbo shrimp, fries and strawberriesfor dessert. It was delicious. After dinner everyone went to walk the entireRiverwalk. After awhile we were ready to head back to the hotel but couldn’tfind it. Huy was supposed to be keeping track of where it was. We just keptwalking in circles. When we finally got back to the hotel, we watchedConstantine and it was confusing and I did not enjoy it. I needed moredetail.

Thursday we went to Fiesta Texas. Upon arrival, Hoang and I set a goalto ride every ride in the park. I think we made it through all scary ones. Backat the hotel Izy and I went to the gym, hot tub and swimming. We met this girlfrom Beverley Hills. Everyone visited with her. That night we watched GuessWho. It was kind of a chick-flick.

Friday we left San Antonio for the San Marcos outlet mall. I managed tospend nothing even though everything looked nice and new. At this point Irealized the trip was almost over and was disappointed. When we arrived atthe UB building everyone was saying good-bye and it felt like I was leavingsome of my family members; but, then I realized I’d see them all in Septem-ber. I really enjoyed the trip and I thank everyone who made it possible.

10th Graders Need to PLAN On It

Soon, your school will announce it is giving the PLANtest. PLAN helps sophomores get ready to succeed in col-lege and beyond. So, of course, Upward Bound students willbe anxious to take the test and share their results with theirU.B. counselor.

Why Take PLAN? Students who take PLAN are more likely to go to

college. Taking PLAN helps ensure you are taking the courses

needed to be successful in college. It identifies academic strengths and weaknesses, so you

can get extra help or take additional courses tostrengthen areas of need.

PLAN gives you an estimated ACT score. Students who take PLAN are more likely to score

higher on the ACT than students who do not. PLAN helps you explore career interests.

Tips for Doing Your Best Get a good night’s rest. Follow directions exactly as they are given. Mark your answer folder carefully. Answer every question. There is no penalty for

guessing. When you’re not sure of the correct answer, first

eliminate every wrong answer you can. Then, pick thebest answer from those left.

Don’t spend too much time on any one question. If aquestion is difficult for you, choose the answer you thinkis best and go on to the next question.

What to Take with You Your Social Security/School Identification number. Three sharpened No. 2 pencils with erasers. A watch, if you want to pace yourself. A calculator, if you want to use one.

If you would like to check out some PLAN test questions, visit www.act.org/plan or stop by the U.B. Office.

What Exactly Is a Pell Grant?Federal Program Offers Another Source of Financing for Students

One of the numerous potentialsources of financial aid for college stu-dents is a Federal Pell Grant. This grantis a form of need-based financial aid,and unlike a loan, the money does nothave to be repaid. Eligible students re-ceive a specified amount each yearunder this program.

EligibilityThe U.S. Department of Education

uses a standard formula to evaluate theinformation a student supplies whenapplying for a Pell Grant. This formulaproduces an EFC (expected familycontribution) number, which will deter-mine if the student is eligible for thegrant. Applicants must be undergradu-ate students who have not earned abachelor’s degree. Each applicant mustbe a U.S. citizen or an eligible nonciti-zen and needs to have a high schooldiploma or a GED or to demonstratethe ability to benefit from the program.

Award AmountThe maximum Pell Grant for the

2004–2005 award year is $4,050. Theamount of the grant depends on both

the student’s EFC and several otherfactors. These factors are the student’scost of attendance (tuition and fees, room and board, books, supplies andso on) and the amount of time the stu-dent attends school (whether the stu-dent goes to school for a full academicyear or less and whether the student isfull-time or part-time). An applicantmay receive only one Pell Grant in anaward year and may not receive PellGrant funds from more than one schoolat a time.

DisbursementA school may credit Pell Grant funds

to a student’s school account, pay thestudent directly (usually by check), oruse a combination of these two meth-ods. The school must notify the stu-dent in writing of the amount of the PellGrant and of how and when paymentswill be made. Schools must pay at leastonce per term, whether that is a se-mester, trimester or quarter. Schoolsthat don’t use formally defined, tradi-tional terms must pay the student atleast twice per academic year.

Time LimitCurrent regulations pose no limit on

the number of years a student can re-ceive a Pell Grant as long as the stu-dent remains in a degree program asan undergraduate and does not have abachelor’s degree. However, PresidentGeorge W. Bush recently proposed alimit on Pell Grant funding of eight yearsfor students pursuing a four-year de-gree and four years for students pur-suing a two-year degree.

How and When to ApplyStudents apply for not only Pell

Grants but all federal, state and institu-tional financial aid programs (exceptscholarships) by completing the FreeApplication for Federal Student Aid(FAFSA). The paper FAFSA is avail-able from high school guidance offices,or the form may be completed onlineat www.fafsa.ed.gov. The FAFSAmust be submitted by the end of Juneto be eligible for aid in the followingacademic year.

As the President and Ms. UpwardBound, I had the opportunity to experi-ence the time of my life.

Let’s just say the summer bridge tripwas awesome, wonderful, rewardingand fun. One thing I am so happy foris to come back with a pocket full ofmemories, which I will cherish forever. One memory was of everyone watch-ing late night movies. Now you shouldthink about this and feel sorry for theguys because all they heard was “Ohmy gosh, he’s hot!!!” Other momentswere having the chance to get to knoweach other more. I felt the bond be-tween everyone made each person feelspecial. For instance, who knew Israelhad never ridden a roller-coaster untilwe got to Fiesta Texas. (Sorry Izy, ifyou didn’t want anyone to know - nowyou can share it with everyone.). Notonly did the people in Upward Boundhelp him conquer his fears, but will alsohelp and understand what will comelater on in life. We also sought out the‘balla.’

Eight pairs of shoes plus Mom’scredit card equals Phillip being the hap-piest boy alive. One thing that wasgreat was to watch Koral’s excitementraise to 100% when she got to touchthe dolphin. Well, okay, I admit I jumpedand screamed with her but it wasn’tmy fault that we happened to be thetallest people leaning over the railing.

The last thing I want to share arethe images of La Porchea eating an oys-ter off of a half-shell and Jeremy andShaRaye almost choking when tryingto eat squid and octopus. Add all thattogether and it equals U.B. Fear Fac-tor and fun.

These are only a few of the manymoments that I will cherish, all I’ve gotto say is “I can’t wait until next year.”and I know Orlando agrees with me.
