    Switch-mode power supplies (SMPSs) are

    frequently used to provide the various levels of

    DC output power needed for modern

    applications, and necessary in achievinghighly efficient, reliable DC-DC power-

    conversion systems.

    Why Switch Mode Power

    Supplies?

    Switch Mode power supplies offer the

    advantages of smaller size, weight, and cost

    while achieving much higher power efficiencies.

    Switch mode power supplies have a more

    complex circuit design than linear power

    supplies, but at medium to high power levels,

    the cost and complexity of dealing with highheat dissipation outweighs a more complex

    circuit.

    SMPS DC Converter Topologies

    SMPSs can convert a DC input voltageinto a different DC output voltage,

    depending on the circuit topology.

    Step-down (Buck).

    Step-up (Boost).

    Step-up/down (Buck-boost or Inverter).

    In that way Switch-mode power supplies(SMPSs) are frequently used to providethe various levels of DC output power

    needed for modern applications, and areindispensable in achieving highly efficient,reliable DC-DC power-conversion

    systems. The versatility of SMPSs solvesthe problem of converting a standardsource voltage into a usable, specifiedoutput voltage.
