What are SATs?SATs are a series of assessments carried out at the end of
a Key Stage to assess progress within the National Curriculum
The three core subjects are tested: English, Maths and Science.
In Year 2 the tests are marked and graded inschool, in Year 6 the assessments are marked externally.
When do they take place?
Monday 9th May
Tuesday 10th May
Wednesday 11th May
Thursday 12th May
Friday 13th May
Reading Test 45 minutes (plus 15 minutes reading time)
Writing Test (short) 20 minutes & Spelling Test 10 minutes
Mental Mathematics Test 20 minutes
Mathematics Test B 45 minutes
Science Test A 45 minutes
Writing Test (long) 45 minutes
Mathematics Test A 45 minutes
Science Test B 45 minutes
1hour 1hour 15 minutes
1hour 5 minutes
45 minutes 1 hour 30 minutes
How will we administer the tests?
To ensure that the testing process is as stress free as possible the tests
will be taken in small groups, in the classroom environment.
The testing process will be kept as relaxed as is possible.
How are the tests graded?
The number of marks required for each level is not released until
after the final test is completed.The tests will be awarded Level 3Level 4 or Level 5 depending on
their numerical scoreThe final levels will be available to
the school from 5th July.
EnglishThe English test is split into 4
sections:Reading Comprehension
Short Writing TaskLong Writing Task
Spelling
The teacher can read instructions only in these tests.
MathsThe Maths test is split into 3 sections:
Paper A – No calculatorPaper B - Calculator allowed
Mental Test – CD
Children who find reading thequestions difficult will be given a
‘reader’ to enable support.
ScienceThe Science test is split into two equal
sections: Paper A Paper B
Both papers are of equal difficulty and cover a wide range of topics.
The papers cover practical science by asking questions relating to
experimentation.Children who find reading the
questions difficult will be in a small group to enable support.

A final note……Whilst these tests are very
important, they are not the only measure of progress used by us or
the secondary schools.Each child is given a teacher assessment in addition to test scores which is based on work
completed throughout the whole year.
