Celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the Dedication of
Holy Cross New Church, GreenfordJune – September 2016
Holy Cross Church, Ferrymead Gardens, Greenford UB6 9NJreINSp 75
A NEW CHURCH FOR A NEW SUBURB
In the 1930s the medieval Holy Cross Church became too small for the rapidly growing population of Greenford, so the parish decided to build a much larger new church to accommodate the greater numbers. The foundation stone was laid on 10 July 1939, and despite wartime restrictions on labour and materials, construction continued through the London blitz, and by the summer of 1941, the building was largely complete. On Saturday 5th July a service of dedication was held, and the church started to be used.
The church was designed by Professor Albert Richardson (later Sir Albert Richardson), a well-known architect of the period.
The anniversary is being marked by a series of events, and you are warmly invited to join us in celebrating this unusual building, and the life of the Christian community that is based here.
