Community Service Awards The Ohio Campus Compact Charles J. Ping Student Service Award Sponsored by Ohio Campus Compact, the Charles J. Ping Student Service Award is designed to recognize and honor the next generation of civic leaders and problem- solvers. Recipients are those students who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and contributions to community service or service-learning on their campus and within their communities.

The Sara Paullin Casto Student Humanitarian AwardThe Sara Paullin Casto Student Humanitarian Award is named in memory of a 1996 Ohio Wesleyan alumna who co-founded a Small Living Unit, the House of H.O.P.E. (Helping Others Pursue Education), which existed on campus for eleven years; conducted extensive community research that led to the founding of the Literacy Coalition of Delaware County; and was a past recipient of the Student Humanitarian Award. This award is given in recognition of consistent outstanding leadership in public service, especially for humanitarian causes, on campus, in the community, and beyond.

2018 RECIPIENT

Trevor Martin ’19Worthington, OHSocial Justice

New heights reached: “I am proud to have been a part of kick-starting the Social Justice major, founding the OWU Young Democratic Socialists of America, working to become the next moderator of the historic Peace and Justice SLU, and inspiring others to finish Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Poor People’s Campaign through Mid-Ohio Workers Association.”

The Patricia G. Young Award for Leadership in Service to Children and Youth The Patricia G. Young Award is named in honor of an OWU Trustee who serves as a Juvenile Court Judge in her home state of Idaho. The award recognizes the student who has demonstrated exemplary leadership in service to children and youth.

New heights reached: “With the help of faculty and friends at OWU, I am proud that I’ve grown as an individual and I have broken out of my comfort zone. I eagerly seek out resources from Career Services and other connections I’ve made through OWU to further my interest in sociology, and also innovative ways I can make a visual impact in this world.”

The Bridge Builder Award is given in recognition of exemplary service and engagement within and beyond the campus community, especially in the non-profit sector.

Best New Member Award “Best New Member” is awarded by the Executive Committee of WCSA to a member who has begun his or her first term in the previous year and who has made the greatest overall contribution to the mission and goals of WCSA.

New heights reached: “I have served as the Treasurer for multiple organizations on campus including CPB, Environment and Wildlife Club, and OWU Beekeeping Club. Because of this experience, I was nominated by Cara Harris, president of WCSA, to full senate as a member of the budget committee. As a senator, I have been fighting for student concerns on the Slocum Hall Task Force to help preserve its historic character.”

Guy Sarvis Award

Guy Sarvis Award

Dr. Sarvis was a Professor of Sociology at Ohio Wesleyan who devoted much of his life to promoting and living by example the virtues and values of cross-cultural understanding and sensitivity to racial and religious diversity. This award is given to a student who has a demonstrated record of fostering cross-cultural understanding and contributing to the creation of a culture of hospitality and inclusion at OWU.

2018 RECIPIENT

Paris Norman ’20Cleveland, OHHistory | French | Black World Studies

New heights reached: “I have taken my lessons from my classes and used them to have meaningful and thought-provoking conversations with others. As an African American woman, I have been able to learn from others who aren’t American and I have been able to teach them about my culture.”

President’s Club RecognitionPresident’s Club exists to support and advance the mission and goals of Ohio Wesleyan University with specific attention and regard to the Office of the President. Members of the President’s Club serve the University at important functions, at Pritchard House events, and coordinate President’s Ball.

Meek Leadership Awards

The Meek Leadership Awards were established in 1997 with a contribution from Phillip J. Meek and Nancy LaPorte Meek, both 1959 OWU graduates. OWU seniors who have demonstrated exceptional leadership service during their years at Ohio Wesleyan and show promise to sustain that commitment throughout their lives may be considered for these awards.
