BC BOARD APPROVES STRATEGIC PLAN At its December meeting yesterday in Lexington, Kentucky, the Breeders= Cup Board of Directors ap- proved a long-term strategic planning initiative, which could result in a permanent home for the Breeders= Cup World Championships. The cornerstones of the plan, according to a press release, are: $ Discussing the possibility of a single permanent host site location for the Breeders= Cup World Championships; $ To establish a new Breeders= Cup Racing Series in partnership with North American and European racetracks to help market the road to the champion- ship event; $ Expand brand marketing and commercial develop- ment programs, with an emphasis on digital market- ing and social media; $ Take a new approach to nominations to signifi- cantly expand the number of Breeders= Cup-eligible horses. AThis is the culmination of a year-long strategic plan- ning process designed to ensure the Breeders= Cup continues to thrive and grow as one of the world=s pre- mier sporting events and as the definitive international event in our sport,@ said Breeders= Cup Chairman Wil- liam S. Farish Jr. AHaving approved these strategic recommendations, the Board has tasked the management team with developing a spe- cific business plan in each of the four areas, with a goal of approving the final plans at our April 2010 meetings.@ Satish Sanan, the BC board member who chaired the Strategic Planning Committe, added, AFor 26 years, the Breeders= Cup took one ap- proach. We understand that a new approach means significant change, but the Strategic Plan- ning Committee believed a new approach is warranted if the property is going to evolve, adapt and grow in a changing marketplace.@ The Board also revealed that Matthew Lutz, who had served as the Breeders= Cup=s chief financial officer since 2007, has been promoted to chief operating officer/CFO. STATELY VISION Excepting his two unplaced effort in the G1 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe, Vision d= Etat (Fr) (Chichicastenango {Fr}) has been a model of consistency in his 12-race career, with eight victories and two minor placings from his other starts. Trained by Eric Libaud, a former assistant to Alain de Royer-Dupre who sent out Ange Gabriel (Fr) (Kaldounevees {Fr}) to score in the 2002 Vase, Vision d=Etat defeated 19 fellow sophomores to land last year=s G1 Prix du Jockey-Club and came back this season to post wins in the G1 Prix Ganay over an extended 10 furlongs Apr. 26 and a half-length victory from Tartan Bearer (Ire) (Spec- trum {Ire}) in the G1 Prince of Wales=s S. at Royal Ascot June 17. He was runner-up to Spanish Moon (El Prado {Ire}) in the G2 Prix Foy Sept. 13 before finishing a midpack 10th in the Arc. Balding Goes for Second Vase... Only 36 years of age and on his own for just underseven seasons, trainer Andrew Balding has made a

spectacular start to hiscareer and shoots for asecond G1 Cathay PacificHong Kong Vase withBuccellati (GB) (SovietStar). The son of the leg-endary Ian Balding, An-drew was an amateurrider and served his fatheras assistant trainer beforetaking over at KingsclereStables in January 2003.It did not take long for thejunior Balding to make his

mark, as he was represented by 2003 G1 Epsom Oaksheroine Casual Look (Red Ransom) in his first at bat.

Later that season, the yard was represented by Phoe-nix Reach (Ire) (Alhaarth {Ire}), third in the G1 St LegerS. before invading North America for a win in the GI Pattison Canadian International S. He failed to hit theboard in his first four outings of 2004, but, returned onjust two weeks= rest off a deceptively good sixth in theG1 Japan Cup, came from off the pace for a 26-1 upsetin that year=s Vase. Phoenix Reach would go on to takethe G1 Dubai Sheema Classic to complete a rareGroup/Grade I trifecta. Buccellati was a progressivefour-year-old in 2008, taking the Listed Godolphin S.and the G3 St Simon S. prior to a decent sixth in theVase, two lengths behind the victorious Doctor Dino(Fr) (Muhtathir {GB}). Winner of the G3 Ormonde S.this season, he was well held when fourth to SpanishMoon (El Prado {Ire}) in the G2 Prix Foy Sept. 13, butbounced back with a solid third-place effort in thisyear=s Canadian International Oct. 17. Balding is lookingfor improvement on last year=s effort. AThe horse seemsthat much better this year,@ he commented. AWhile hisdraw [9] is not as good as I had hoped, it is two betterthan last year. We are hoping for a share of theprizemoney again.@ William Buick, who guided Lahaleeb(Ire) (Redback {Ire}) to an upset win in the GI E.P. Tay-lor S. on the International undercard, has the call.

SLIMMED-DOWN CATALOGUE FOR CXHKIS A total of 20 two-year-olds in training, acquired at

sales venues from the U.S., Europe and Australasia, is

set to go under the hammer this morning (HK time) at

the unique Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Sale,

to be held in the parade ring at Sha Tin Racecourse.

During last year=s event, 30 horses were sold for gross

receipts of HK$87.2 mil-

lion (about $11.2 mil-

lion), but this year=s of-

fering has been reduced

by about 50 percent.

ANumerically, [this] will

not be the biggest sale

we have ever had be-

cause we are focusing on

quality, and we have 20

very carefully selected

individuals with conformation and pedigrees geared to

Hong Kong,@ commented Mark Player, head of Interna-

tional Races, sale and development for the Hong Kong

Jockey Club. AWe feel we have zoned in on the right

individuals, and it has been reflected with their presen-

tation.@

Previous graduates of the sale--restricted to licensedHong Kong owners--include Good Ba Ba (Lear Fan),who sold for HK$1.7 million in 2004 and will shoot foran unprecedented third straight victory in the G1 Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Mile Sunday afternoon; The Duke (Aus) (Danehill), an HK$1.6-million graduatewho took the 2006 Mile; and Scintillation (Aus)(Danehill), a multiple stakes winner in Hong Kong. Whilethe final of the mighty Danehills have made their waythrough this sale for the last time, there is plenty ofpedigree appeal this afternoon. Among the horses ex-pected to attract the most attention is hip 17, a geldedson of Mr. Greeley from Shawklit Delight (Pine Bluff).Purchased for $250,000 out oflast year=s Keeneland Septembersale, the striking chestnut made afavorable impression in his under-tack breeze-up down the Sha Tinstraight last Saturday (video). Heis a half-brother to Shawklit Mint(Air Forbes Won), winner of theGII Vagrancy H. Hip 13 is a son ofFlying Spur (Aus), sire of Inspira-tion (Aus), who upset last year=s G1 Hong Kong Sprintat 66-1. A son of Miss Mocha (NZ) (Senor Pete), theAugust foal cost A$230,000 at Magic Millions earlierthis year.

It’s no surprise to see a sire like DYNAFORMER at the top of

the industry lists. This year, however, he has 17 stakes winners

and 38 stakes performers, more than any other year of his

career. He is North America’s Leading Turf Sire by a million-

dollar margin, and no other stallion in the Northern

Hemisphere has more Grade I winners than Dynaformer’s four.

Sure to book full early this year, be sure to put Dynaformer

in your future breeding plans w ith a call to

Three Chimneys today.

I read with interest [Friday] the write-up on Crisp (ElCorredor), a TDN ARising Star.@ This is the female familyof Assault, Triple Crown winner in 1946. The third damEqual Change was second to Ruffian in the CCA Oaksat Belmont. She was a half-sister to a horse by thename of No Bias who was a top sprinter and also stoodabout 17 hands. No Bias also had a tendency to bearout and, at one time, was fitted with a prong bit. Itsounds as if Crisp has not fallen far from her familytree! --Helen Alexander

‘Stardom’ Bound for California... Stardom Bound (Tapit) is slated to return to Californiafor the GII El Encino S. at Santa Anita Jan. 17, accord-ing to Daily Racing Form. "That race is going to tell useverything," Michael Iavarone, co-president of IEAHStables, told DRF. "If she doesn't run huge there, then

we got to look at other options. If she wants to show us she stillwants to be a racehorse, we'llcontinue on. If she wants toshow us she wants to be amommy, we'll consider that, too." The grey filly earned cham-pionship honors in 2008 whenshe ran the tables in her divisionfor trainer Chris Paasch, cappedby a stirring victory in the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Fillies.Sold to IEAH Stables and part-ners for $5.7 million at FTKNOVfollowing that win, StardomBound captured the GI Las

Virgenes S. and GI Santa Anita Oaks for the late BobbyFrankel, then was turned over to Rick Dutrow Jr. priorto the GI Ashland S. at Keeneland. She was sidelinedfollowing that effort, and most recently had a troubledtrip when fifth in the GI Gazelle S. at Aqueduct Nov. 28. AThat was a failed attempt to see if she couldhandle kickback,@ Iavarone continued. AGoing into thefirst turn, I knew we were in trouble. She looked like acorkscrew. What [jockey] Mike [Smith] did was get offthe rail out in the clear and she got rank on him." Cur-rently in Florida, Stardom Bound will be housed withGary Stevens, who also trains IEAH colorbearerDiamondrella (GB) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}).

The eight-year-old hasbeen represented by black-type winner Night Actionfrom two crops to race. AThe PennsylvaniaBreeders= Program provides tremendous opportunitiesfor farms and breeders in that state, and Dana Point=sroster of stallions is well equipped to capitalize on this.

Modigliani Heading to Castleton Lyons: Modigliani (Danzig--Hot Princess {GB}, by Hot Spark{Ire}) will stand the 2010 season at Castleton Lyons, the Lexington-based nursery announced yesterday. The11-year-old, who previously called Ireland=s GreentreeStud home, will stand for $5,000, Nov. 1 terms. AWehave confidence in his ability as a sire and havestrongly supported Modigliani over the last couple ofbreeding seasons. [He] now has a wonderful opportu-nity in Kentucky to be bred to more quality mares fromour well-established Castleton Lyons broodmare band. This stallion has demonstrated from his small earlierbooks in Ireland that he is capable of siring speedy two-year-olds, which would clearly suit the American breed-ing and racing programs.@
