Please give to

those who have

given a lifetime... This weekend has been

designated for a

collection for the

Retirement Fund

for Religious

Elder sisters, brothers, and religious order priests dedicated

their lives to service. These women and men—more accus-

tomed to giving rather than receiving, to serving rather than

being served—accept the inevitable challenges of aging

with grace, humility, and wisdom. Their habits of prayer

sustain them, and many find new ways to minister, even at

advanced ages. Please pray for God's continued blessing on

those who have faithfully served our Church and world.

Through your donation, you share in the actual care of

these selfless, dedicated women and men. There are special

envelopes in the pews for this collection. Please return the

envelope in the collection basket or to the Parish Office.

There will be no Religious Education classes

on the following Wednesdays: December 16,

23 or 30th Classes will resume on Wednesday,

January 6th. Merry Christmas!

This Sunday is called Gaudete Sunday Rejoice Sunday. This comes from the readings we hear today, and it underlines an im-portant point. In the Gospel, we hear John the Baptist telling different groups what to do - they must repent, and change their lives. We might think of this as a rather joyless thing - something which is hard and unrewarding. The message of this Sunday is that repentance and changing our lives to welcome Jesus is something richly joyful. When we are planning to welcome anyone we love to our homes, we set about cleaning and preparing for their visit with enthusiasm - nothing is too much trouble for someone we care for greatly. Even scrub-bing the bath or polishing the furniture can be a happy and joyful thing! The message of this Sunday is that preparing to welcome the Lord - even though it may involve hard work - is something utterly joyful, be cause of our love for Him, and His love for us.

Hope and Joy

We begin this third week of Advent

asking to feel the joy that comes from

knowing our Lord's coming to us is

near. In these precious days ahead, we

are praying, longing, hoping in the

background of our everyday lives.

His mission is for each of us who ask, "What must we do?"

He tells us to give away our coats, our security. He asks that we

not bully people but be content with our lives.

We can smile today as we imagine the freedom he has won for

us and how liberating it will be to live it, with him, for others.

It is right to give our God thanks and praise.

Have no anxiety at all, but in everything,

by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving,

make your requests known to God.

Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding

will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

Shout for joy, O daughter Zion!

Sing joyfully, O Israel!

Be glad and exult with all your heart. Zephaniah 3:14

Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing.

In all circumstances give thanks. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Rejoice Always The third Sunday of Advent is

traditionally known as “Gaudete

Sunday.” Gaudete is the Latin word

for “rejoice.” We light the pink can-

dle on our Advent wreaths to high-

light the joyful mood that is elicited

by our growing awareness that the

Lord is near. Like Mary, we do not

rejoice in ourselves or in our possessions, but “our spirits

rejoice in God, our Savior,” the Son of God who alone can

bring true “joy to the world!”

A new movie about Mother Teresa: The Letters

MOTHER TERESA, recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, is con-sidered one of the greatest humanitarians of modern times. Her selfless commitment changed hearts, lives and inspired millions throughout the world. THE LETTERS, as told through personal letters she wrote over the last 40 years of her life, reveal a trou-bled and vulnerable woman who grew to feel an isolation and an abandonment by God. The story is told from the point of view of a Vatican priest charged with the task of investigating acts and events following her death. He recounts her life’s work, her political oppression, her religious zeal and her unbreakable spirit. Look for this movie at a theater near you and also see a trailer at http://www.thelettersmovie.com.

The Catholic Church in California serves and advocates for the poor, vulnerable and those in need not because they are Catholic, but because we are Catholic.

1

“I have decided to announce an Extraordinary Jubilee which has at its centre the mercy of God. It will be a Holy Year of Mercy. We want to live in the light of the word of the Lord: “Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful” (cf. Lk 6:36). And this especially applies to confessors! So much mercy! - excerpt from a homily by Pope Francis announcing the extraordinary Jubilee”

– Pope Francis

A PUBLICATION OF THE CALIFORNIA CATHOLIC CONFERENCE VOLUME 1, NO. 10

Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy Begins As the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy commences on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (December 8), we are surrounded by charitable opportunities and, because we are in Advent, may feel just a bit more inclined to perform works of mercy.

We may volunteer at our local soup kitchen, adopt a needy family or, with the abundance of bell ringers in front of shops, make a quick contribution that may lessen our “guilt” at buying so many gifts.

In reality, because God has shown mercy on all of us, we are encouraged to incorporate mercy into our daily life. Everyday deeds – taking care of children, teaching adults and children about faith, caring for an elderly parent or visiting a sick friend in the hospital – are true works of mercy. As Saint Teresa of Avila said,

Christ has no body but yours, No hands, no feet on earth but yours, Yours are the eyes with which he looks, Compassion on this world

But after the holidays, for some of us, it may seem difficult to incorporate mercy into our pressure- filled, hectic daily routines. Yet Pope Francis –

www.cacatholic.org

Continued on next page

echoing the call of the Gospel – continually challenges us to reach out and encounter those in need and those living on the margins of society.

Because We Are Catholic will focus on these works of mercy throughout the Jubilee Year of Mercy, highlighting a different one each month. First, an introduction:

• Feed the hungry

• Give drink to the thirsty

• Clothe the naked

• Shelter the homeless

• Visit the sick

• Visit the imprisoned

• Bury the dead

• Counsel the doubtful

• Comfort the sorrowful

• Bear wrongs patiently

• Forgive all injuries

• Pray for the living and the dead

• Instruct the ignorant

• Admonish the sinner

A PUBLICATION OF THE CALIFORNIA CATHOLIC CONFERENCE VOLUME 1, NO. 10 2

The Works of Mercy

The spiritual and corporal works of mercy are charitable actions we perform for others. Spiritual works of mercy include: instructing, advising, consoling and comforting others. The corporal works of mercy focus on helping those in need.

By performing these works, it helps alleviate human misery in all forms – poverty, oppression, physical and psychological illness and emotional or spiritual distress. Misery does not discriminate - it afflicts all at some point. The choice is ours on how we improve our situation.

WhaT is a Jubilee year?

The jubilee year is a “Holy Year” marked by acts of faith, charity and “brotherly communion” according the Vatican’s website. Ordinary jubilee years occur every 25 or 50 years, an extraordinary jubilee is declared for a momentous occasion, the last one occurred in 1983.

The concept of a Jubilee stems from ancient Hebrew tradition

where a Jubilee was celebrated every 50 years. It was a time intended to restore equality among the Israelites. It provided opportunities for families to regain control over property and even gain their personal freedom if enslaved.

The start of a Jubilee year is marked with the opening of the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica. This door is normally cemented shut. This symbolic rite indicates that the faithful are offered an extraordinary path towards salvation during the Jubilee

Kicking off this year of Mercy, the California Catholic Conference would like to highlight the mercy that takes place all around us. During the next year, we are asking our members to submit stories about the mercy they witness in their churches and communities. Please submit your story to [email protected].

“I am confident that the whole Church, which is in such need of mercy for we are sinners, will be able to find in this Jubilee the joy of rediscovering and rendering fruitful God’s mercy, with which we are all called to give comfort to every man and every woman of our time. Do not forget that God forgives all, and God forgives always. Let us never tire of asking forgiveness.”
