4 Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, People of Our Lady, Mother of the Church, "What is this? A new teaching with authority. He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him." Many times we ask ourselves – where are the miracles, where are the signs which accompa-nied Jesus’ teaching. Were these only given to people two thousand years ago? This year is the 100th anniversary of the stigmata received by a contemporary saint – Padre Pio (1887 – 1968) and 50 years after his death. He is one of the most powerful saints in to-day’s world. He did not only receive the stigmata as a sign of his devotion to the Passion of Christ; he also received a special gift of bilocation – he has been seen at the same time in dif-ferent locations. The spectacular signs are not the only gifts Padre Pio received from God. As a spiritual director, he also attracted many people in a pastoral way. People came from far away for confession even though Padre Pio was known for telling people their unconfessed sins. Many people found a way to pray through Padre Pio’s spiritual work. Half a century after his death there are many prayer groups following the spiritual heritage of Padre Pio. Padre Pio is one of the examples of God’s signs in today’s world. There are many other very well-known signs given to our generation like Maximili-an Kolbe, Mother Theresa, and John Paul II. When-ever God gives us signs He is looking for us to re-connect our inner life with Him. We are blessed with many new technologies in communication, transportation, bioengineering, etc., that help us a lot, but that doesn’t replenish our soul’s desires. We can live in a high civilization and have a desert in-side of our heart. Jesus’ teaching fills up our hearts with the power of His Spirit. With Jesus’ teaching we discover the meaning and the goal of human life.

May God bless you! Fr. Andrew

Our Lady, Mother of the Church Mission Statement

We, the members of Our Lady, Mother of the Church, are drawn together through baptism as a part of the Body of Christ. We are a caring Catholic community, working together as instruments through which Jesus, our risen Lord and Head, continues His mission. Linked to Christ as His Body, we believe that the risen Jesus still proclaims God’s word, gives thanks and praise, welcomes, nurtures, comforts and reaches out to all people. Using the hands and hearts of the members of the parish, with a growing sense that each of us is gifted and has an important part to play in our Parish, Church and World, we renew our call: ♦ to be a Parish diligent about Word and Eucharist, the primary source of our nourishment and spiritual growth... ♦ to be “missioned” - sent forth in the person of Jesus, to bring His Word and Eucharist to family, friends, neighbors and workplace... ♦ to reach out to the sick, the homebound, the persecuted, the lonely, the poor and the bereaved… ♦ to find time to share laughter, joy, friendship, at times, tears; and always to share the goodness of each other...

7 Please Make Your Gift to the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal“ Come, Follow Me”

Many families in our parish will be receiving the Annual Catholic Ap-peal request mailing from Cardinal Cupich. On behalf of those served by the ministries and services funded by the ACA, we thank you for your gifts. Please return your response as soon as possible. The ACA offers a wonderful opportunity to answer Jesus’ call to “Come, Follow Me.” In addition to providing for ministries and services throughout the Archdiocese, the Appeal also funds services that are of great help to ministries here in our Parish. For example, Appeal funds support Min-ister of Care Training, Catechesis Program, Continuing Education and Formation for Parish Staff and Ministers, Ministers of Consolation Training, and our Respect Life Ministry to name a few.

As we contemplate God’s many gifts to us, we should also reflect on our gratitude for these gifts. Your financial support for the work of our Parish, our Archdiocese, and the Church throughout the world is, in fact, one way to express this gratitude. Please give generously to the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal. When our parish reaches its goal of $16,116 in paid pledges, 100% of the additional funds re-ceived will be returned to us for use in our Parish.

For all who minister at Our Lady, Mother of the Church

Eucharistic Ministers, Altar Server Families, Ministers of Care, St. Vincent dePaul, Lec-

tors, Ministers of Welcome, Music Ministry, St. Martha Group, St. Matthew Group, Catechists, Consolation Ministers, and

Praying Shawls are invited to join us for our

Appreciation Dinner Friday, February 9, 2018

The Cold and Flu Season is here! Due to the widespread outbreak of the Flu, while attending Mass, and if you are not feeling well, be courteous to your fellow Parishioners by covering your mouth while coughing, not shaking hands and not taking Jesus through the Cup. Some other helpful hints from the U.S. Center for Disease Control: • Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick keep yo-

ur distance from others to protect from getting sick too! • Stay home when you are sick. This will prevent the spreading of your

illness to others. • Cover your mouth and nose. Cover with a tissue when coughing or

sneezing to prevent others from getting sick around you. • Clean your hands-washing your hands often will help protect you from

germs. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.

• Avoid touching your eyes and mouth. Germs are often spread when a per-

son touches something that is contaminated and then touches their eyes, nose or mouth.

• Practice other good health habits by cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces at ho-

me, work and school, especially when someone is ill. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress and drink plenty of fluids and eat nutritious food.
