Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day at VillageWalkWith Patrick McKenny, a 19th century Irish tavern owner

(AKA Joe Riley retired history professor and VillageWalk resident).

Thursday, March 17th • 7:00 p.m. • Town CenterPlease stop by or call the HOA office at 239-949-9909 to sign-up

Travel back in time to 1847, The Black Year of the Great Famine. Tea, coffee and Sue O’Riley’s Irish soda bread will be served. Feel free to bring a wee bit of the whiskey with ye if ye like…

The character you will meet is Patrick McKenny. He is a 48 year old Irish-born tavern owner living in the hard coal regions of Pennsylvania. Born in 1830, he emigrated to America at age 17. He has been a canal worker, coal miner and served in the Union army during the Civil War. The audience must imagine that the time is 1877. Everything Patrick McKenny says is historically true. The story of the Irish in America is very similar to other immigrant groups. Patrick has some very strong opinions that, in some ways, are completely out of touch with the present time. He does not act, talk, think, or behave like a modern man.

CLUBS

VillageWalk CERT Our next meeting is

March 9th at 6:00 p.m.

CERT is a group of community volunteers trained by our local fire department, to be first responders in emergency situations such as hurricanes and tornadoes. The team is activated by Bonita Springs Fire and Rescue during such emergencies. At Village Walk we have meetings the second Wednesday of each month at the Town Center. We discuss plans for emergency situations, refresh our training and enable us to better function as a team. The VillageWalk team always seeks more volunteers to better address emergency events. Residents interested in joining should contact Nicole Hornberger at Bonita Springs Fire Control and Rescue, (239) 949-6227, [email protected]. The next 2-day training class will be scheduled in September. These training courses are free and quite valuable for responders to emergencies. If you would like more information or have any questions, please email [email protected].

The Cancer Support Group The Annual Susan G.Komen Race for the Cure is being held at the Coconut Point Mall on Saturday,

March 5, 2016 at 8:00 a.m. Please join our team, the Village Walkers of Bonita, and help us in the fight against

breast cancer. This is a wonderful family event which benefits breast cancer research, treatment and programs. More information regarding registration and/or donations is available at komenswfl.org or you may contact Caryl Rumble at [email protected].

Monthly meetings of the Cancer Support Group are held the second Wednesday of the month at 4:00 p.m. in the Town Center.

the Canadian Club to get tax and other tips geared for Canadians living at VillageWalk and to meet other Canadians.

VILLAGEWALK AMBASSADORS WELCOME OUR NEW RESIDENTS

We encourage our new residents to join us for Cocktails & Conversations on the second Friday of the month at 7pm in the main lobby.

The next get together is Friday, March 11th.

Grandma’s ClosetWe need your baby stuff! As people move in and out of our community, it’s important to keep updating our Grandma’s Closet listing. Grandma’s Closet is a community listing of baby and children’s items such as cribs, strollers, play toys, etc. that you are willing to share with other homeowners. We all have family who come into town; instead of buying these items why not help someone in need. If you are willing to share or need items to be shared, please email Margie Lutz at [email protected]. Don’t forget to mention your name, phone number, the items and if you are seasonal or permanent. We thank you in advance!

Sunshine CommitteeIf you are aware of one of your neighbors that is ill or has lost a loved one, please contact Mary Jane at 221-7160 or email [email protected] so that she may send out a card.

Cocktails and Conversation!Next get together is Friday, March 11th • 7:00 p.m.

On the second Friday of the month, Village Walk residents come together at 7:00 p.m. at the Town Center to socialize, meet new people, and generally have fun. It’s informal, there is no agenda, and no planned activities. Just some old-fashioned conversation and sharing. We

would especially like to invite all new residents so we can get to know our neighbors in this amazing community. This is a great way to meet people, find out things your neighbors have learned, and for you to learn from them as well. No need to RSVP. Just come and enjoy your fellow

Village Walk neighbors for an evening of relaxation. Please bring a snack to share if you wish, what you’d like to drink, and any paper products you might need. Hope to see you there! If you have any questions please contact Brenda Peters at [email protected]

MUSEUM ExplorERSOur March 24 exploration (that’s a Thursday) will take us to the Collier

County Historical Museum in Naples where we will. . .“Stalk prehistoric mastodons with Florida’s first big-game hunters, or travel even further back in time, when colossal sharks cruised the warm tropical seas that once covered Southwest Florida.See ancient tools and ceremonial masks and dig up the facts about the Calusa Indian civilization that flourished here centuries before European explorers first set foot on the Gulf coast.Trace America’s little-known wars in South Florida, the heroic journey of the Seminole people, and the origins behind traditional crafts like patchwork, once laboriously stitched together on hand-cranked sewing machines.Experience the daily lives - and utter isolation - of the first settlers and their families as they arrived on this watery frontier a hundred years ago, and share in the vision of a self-made multi-millionaire who dreamed of taming a wilderness swampland the size of Delaware. Along the way, we’ll introduce you to the cattlemen, clam diggers, trail blazers, plume hunters, hermits, loggers, railroaders, rum runners, Crackers and Indian traders who wrote the pioneer history of Collier County. The exhibits include native gardens, restored Naples cottages, the archaeology lab, Seminole village and a Calusa Indian camp.”After lunch in Naples, if time permits, we will visit the Naples Depot Museum. As always we will carpool from the bocce court parking lot at 10:00 AM. Hooked on Books I has a waiting list for those who want to join the group. When a slot is open, they will be asked to join. With HomeCourt, making and managing your tennis court reservations at VillageWalk Bonita just got a lot more convenient.Tennis court reservations in VillageWalk have transitioned from the former paper sign-up book to an online computer system called HomeCourt. The system started accepting reservations in early January and was fully operational on January 11, 2016.

While the HomeCourt system is extremely easy to use, the members of the current and former Tennis Committees and John Thawley will do everything possible to make this transition as simple and painless as possible. Effective immediately, you may access the system, create your user account and make reservations. Step by step instructions and tutorials are posted on the HomeCourt web site.

Homecourt is only a technology change. It does not affect any of our existing VillageWalk tennis rules. Whatever you did in the paper sign-up book will remain the same online. Please use the following link: http://www.tenniswalk.com and click on the Reservations link at the top left to request a user account. Once you have received a confirmation e-mail, read and agree to the rules to access the registration process. We think you’ll find the system is simple and very user friendly. If you encounter problems or want to understand how to use the system, you can view the online tutorial at http://www.tenniswalk.com/tutorial.

* Please note, while HomeCourt is accessible and functional from most smartphones and mobile devices, the screen presentation is limited and you may find some features cumbersome. This is the nature of mobile apps. Given that, we strongly recommend that you use a desktop of laptop computer when accessing HomeCourt.

March 2016 - Safety Tip of The MonthDid you know that DRIVERS MUST YIELD TO PEDESTRIANS IN ALL CROSSWALKS even on Latitude Drive? Florida State Statute 316.130 states:

(7) (b) The driver of a vehicle at any crosswalk where signage so indicates shall stop and remain stopped to allow a pedestrian to cross a roadway when the pedestrian is in the crosswalk or steps into the crosswalk and is upon the half of the roadway upon which the vehicle is traveling or when the pedestrian is approaching so closely from the opposite half of the roadway as to be in danger.

(c) When traffic control signals are not in place or in operation and there is no signage indicating otherwise, the driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way, slowing down or stopping if need be to so yield, to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within a crosswalk when the pedestrian is upon the half of the roadway upon which the vehicle is traveling or when the pedestrian is approaching so closely from the opposite half of the roadway as to be in danger

~ Mike Vober, Safety Committee Chair

Annual Meeting Tuesday March 16th, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. in the Town CenterThe Association is electing 3 members to the Board of Directors and the winners of the election will be announced later in the meeting. Ballots will not be accepted once the meeting is called to order so PLEASE GET YOUR VOTES IN EARLY! Remember, only street representatives need to sign in unless your street is without a street rep. All other owners may simply sit down.

Ballots, ballot envelopes and return envelopes are available in the Town Center. If you wish to change your vote, or have not received or have misplaced your voting materials, please stop by the HOA office to pick up replacement materials.

Ten additional volunteers to be counters and tellers are still needed. Ballot counting will begin as soon as the annual meeting is called to order. Seats will be saved for the counters and tellers to be able to join the annual meeting once all ballots have been counted and recorded. Please email [email protected] if you are able to help with this important task.

Bike ConcernsPlease do not park bikes on the walkways around the Town Center. Many people are leaving bikes outside the Town Center, in front of and behind the Town Center and around Fitness, the Post Office, Café etc. Please use the bike racks or park them temporarily closest to the bike racks if racks are full.

The walkways are for pedestrian use only. We have many people who use wheelchairs, walkers, push toddlers, and walk the sidewalks. Bikes parked on these walkways are obstructions for our pedestrian residents. Please follow the posted signs: do not ride bikes, use skateboards or roller skates or drive golf carts on the Town Center sidewalks and keep our community safe.

Let’s commit to protecting our community and all the people in it!Our streets are busy with many more vehicles, bicyclists, walkers and joggers on our streets. PLEASE remember:

• The speed limit throughout the community is 25 miles per hour.

• Use extra care to watch out for our pet walkers, children, cyclists and joggers.

• Joggers, cyclists: please use reflective gear when on the streets: now that it gets dark earlier, drivers may not see you. Use caution when out at dusk or after dark. Be aware it is against the law to run, jog or walk in the streets when sidewalks are available for use.

• Bicycles are, by law, considered vehicles that share the road with all other vehicles and are required to obey all traffic signs, including stop signs.

• Please slow down when entering the community at the gate. Some drivers fly into the community and do not fully stop at the stop sign. Prevent an accident and obey the speed limit and all traffic signs.

• Do NOT tail gate into the community: if you damage your vehicle and/or the gate due to tailgating the cost to repair is yours. The gate arm is programmed to close after each vehicle: please wait your turn.

Community Reminders for the Pools• No food or drink is allowed

in the pool or on the pool deck. No glass is permitted past the gates leading into the pool area. Do not bring food or beverages into the pool. All food and drink must remain under the covered portion of the pool where several eating tables are placed for that purpose. Please remember to pick up your trash when you leave the pool area. If chips or other food items fall on the pavers, please use the broom and dust pan provided to help keep the pool area free of ants and vermin.

• These rules are per the Florida Health Department and are posted on the sign at the pool. Anyone found to be in violation will be asked to leave the pool area. Please contact the guard house to report violators: the roving guard will respond to pool violations.

• NO SMOKING allowed in either resort or lap pool areas.

Board CornerIn an effort to accommodate the community, to dispel misinformation and to hear community concerns and comments, the 2nd & 4th Wednesday of each month at 1 p.m., and the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m., owners are invited to stop by the HOA Board meeting room for “coffee with Mike”. This will also provide opportunity for individual discussion concerning both the vision and the management of our HOA.~Michael Pace, President

Our Community Is CompleteThe last house closed February 26th! VillageWalk is now completely built out, and work has begun to finish VillageWalk Circle in preparation for the final construction of the perimeter wall and finish landscaping on Bonita Beach Road.

Work is expected to begin on the wall before the end of the second quarter.

Upland Buffer Plant Beds: This information has been published many times. The upland buffer plant beds installed along the lake banks are trimmed once per year and are meant to look natural. Installing, trimming or removing plant material is prohibited in these beds. The lake banks are common area and are owned and under the supervision of the CDD and regulated by Southwest Florida Water Management District. Planting on the banks is prohibited.

The VillageWalk Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions: ARTICLE XXII, states: “No Owner shall (i) undertake or perform any activity in preserves (and the) upland buffers to wetlands. Prohibited activities within such areas include removal of native vegetation (by dredging, application of herbicide or cutting); excavation; placement or dumping of soil, trash, land clearing or landscaping debris; and construction or maintenance of any building, residence, or structure. It shall be the responsibility of all Owners to comply with the construction plans for the surface water management system approved by the applicable permitting agencies.”

All plant material installed in these areas must be removed immediately. The HOA management is inspecting these areas, and owners who have installed plants will receive a violation letter with the requirement to remove homeowner installed plants.

HOA FeesThe Finance Committee is asking all VillageWalk homeowners to pay their HOA fees by automatic debit. This will end the need for coupon books and reduce postage, paper and envelope costs. Hence, you and the HOA will both save money and you will no longer have to take the time to write a check each quarter.

If you are already paying your HOA fees this way, thank you; if you are not, it is simple to switch to automatic payment:

• get a copy of the Maintenance Fee Electronic Payment Authorization Form at the Town Center

• fill it out and attach a blank voided check

• mail the form (with your void check) to the HOA or drop it off at the Town Center
