So You Want to Buy a Fleece Sunday May 15th 2016 1:00pm to 4:00pm Taught by: Sharon Krengel Class Level: Beginner Class Limit: 20 Registration: Required by May 10th Enrollment Cost: $35 Of course, the beautiful color first catches your eye. But what else should you be looking for when you want to purchase a fleece. We will be looking at different types of fleece and deciding what it is we like or don’t like about each one. How much Vegetable Matter does it have in it and how will that affect our spinning pleasure or the final product. Are those tips weak? Is that dander I see? Does it really matter that the fleece is not “even” throughout. These are just some of the characteristics we will be looking at when we evaluate our fleece. We will be looking over a list of terms that judges use when judging a fleece to help guide us in making our choices. You will be able to go from the raw fiber, to the washed and on to the carded ready to spin fibers in exploring our fleece options. After this class you will be better prepared to “judge” a fleece you are interested in purchasing. We will also discuss what you need to do to get your fleece ready to send to the mill or to process yourself. Bring your spinning wheel or drop spindle along. All fibers and handouts are included in the price of the class.

Meet the instructors Vicki Donley: Vicki’s attraction with fiber began in 2011 when my husband and myself bought our first Alpacas, since then we now have 36 Alpacas and one Llama. I skirt, wash, card and spin my own fiber. We participate in local markets, fairs, Alpaca Days and the Boone County farm stroll. Last year we began our journey into becoming a mill. We have a shop and a mill that will be open the middle of May. Annette Gast: Annette is the owner and soap maker of Silver Prairie Farm and Silver Prairie Natural Soap Company.

Sharon Krengel: Over twenty years ago Sharon saw a skein of hand spun yarn and fell in love with it. She wanted to do that! After a number of calls to the local feed and seed and then some shepherds, she was introduced to spinning by Toni Neil of The Fold, just outside of Marengo. Taking the raw fibers fresh from the farm, carding and blending them, spinning them, and then knitting or weaving the final product has always given her great pleasure. Sharon has been a member of the Hollow Tree Spinners guild for several years and currently is the past president. Janette Neal-Zopp: Janette is a multi-medium and re-enactor. She has been doing Fiber Arts for over 45 years, in many areas which include felting, sewing, spinning, weaving, basketry, embroidery, needle punch, and caning. Janette holds 5 certifications in faux finishing and decorative painting, has done sculptures in clay, wood, and wool and studies and practices Russian Iconography. As a re-enactor she demonstrates and teaches hand works of women pre-1840. “Our art today was their way of life then”. She makes her own historically correct clothing and custom orders for others. Her art work has been published in several magazines and books. She presents programs and teaches at grade schools, adult continuing education programs, fiber guilds, clubs, and other privet venues. Janette can be contact by e-mail at [email protected]

Esther Peregrine: Esther started knitting in 4-H and from there went on to spin and weave just about every fiber available. She started raising silkworms in 2007 and fell in love with the whole process of watching the silkworms spin their cocoons and then processing the cocoons into yarn or thread and ultimately into a finished silk scarf or shirt. She has demonstrated silk reeling at schools and museums and has taught workshops on making silk mawatas at the Fiber Event in Greencastle, IN.

Mary Price: Mary Price is a basket weaving instructor from Woodstock, Illinois. Her basketry works of art are marketed under the name Sunset Ridge Basketry. She has been weaving since 1996. Mary started teaching in 1999 from her home studio in Woodstock which she opens for private class bookings. She enjoys sharing her enthusiasm for the art of basket weaving with others. She travels offering classes at retirement communities, churches, libraries, and community park districts. She coordinates classes for home school students, Boy and Girl Scouts and in-home basket weaving parties. She has created her own basket patterns and specializes in practical, functional reed baskets.

Silke Sordyl: Silke Sordyl was born and raised in Germany. She has lived in McHenry County, Illinois for two and a half years now. Silke has been working with wool since she was 14 years old. Her favorite fiber activity is using needle and wet felting skills she has learned from the Waldorf School in the craft cycle to create beautiful and extremely detailed Gnomes and Fairies. Sarah Troia: Sarah Troia is an accomplished shearer of Angora Rabbits. She is currently the head shearer on Bumblebee Acres Farm located in Harvard, IL whose rabbitry holds 30 plus angoras. Sarah has been shearing bunnies since the age of eight and has long since perfected her bunny shearing and grooming skills and would like to pass on her tips and tricks to other angora fanciers.

Mary Wallace: Mary enjoys introducing people to the wonderful and beautiful world of feltmaking. She has been felting for many years, and has taught felting to hundreds of students, ranging in age from pre-school to octogenarians. Teaching venues including high schools and elementary schools, bible camps, fiber festivals and at home. She has taken many workshops from international and national felters throughout the years and continually seeks out more classes to increase her felting knowledge and expand her felting techniques. She is a member of the Black Hawk Artists group in Fort Atkinson, WI, and is participant of the Earth, Wood, and Fire Artist Tour, which is held the fourth weekend of October. Both groups are on Facebook. Her studio is located in rural Cambridge, Wisconsin. She lives with her husband and together they raise a flock of sheep that provides much of the wool she uses for her felted projects.
