Catching a codeWe’ve taken five common six-letter words, listed in alphabetical order, and disguised them using a random substitution cipher. We’ll tell you that K stands for P, and X stands for D. Can you determine the words?

Just add vowelsIn this small crossword, all of the consonants in the answer words are provided (in alphabetical order). The missing vowels—and the words themselves—are for you to guess. The letter Y isn’t used.

ACROSS 1 MSS 4 DN 5 TTT

DOWN 1 TV 2 DST 3 MNN

Times squareEach of the eight letters used in this word square represents a different digit 1 through 8. The numbers outside the grid show the results of multiplying the values of the letters in each row and column. Can you determine the values of the letters and fill the empty grid with their corresponding numbers?

Place your chipsPut poker chips worth $5, $10, or $25 on the squares of this grid—but no more than one chip per square—so that their dollar values total the amount shown for each row, column, and long diagonal. Not every square will have a chip on it. Several chips and one blank square (designated by a star) have been placed to get you started. Can you get all the chips in place?

Reduced tensionA mediator can help! In this addition alphametic, each digit has been replaced with the same letter everywhere it appears. None of the three numbers has a leftmost digit that is zero. Can you find the unique solution?

SkyscrapersThe grid represents a bird’s-eye view of a city’s downtown core. Place a number from 1 to 5 (representing a building’s height) in each cell so that no two buildings in any row or column have the same height. The numbers outside the grid tell you the number of buildings visible from that direction (sample, above). Higher buildings block the view of lower ones behind them. Can you determine the heights of all 25 buildings?

SOLUTIONS

Bits and bytesPut a zero or a one in each empty cell of this grid so that every row and every column contains four ones and four zeros. No more than two ones or two zeros can be adjacent in any row or column. The solution is unique.

Star searchPlace stars in seven cells of this grid so that every row, every column, and every outlined region contains exactly one star. Stars must never be located in adjacent cells, not even diagonally.

SpymasterDeduce a secret number made of four different digits 1 through 9. The chart shows four guesses at the number, and a score for each guess using marbles. Any digit that appears in the secret number in the same position as in the guess is scored with a black marble. Any digit that appears in the secret number in a different position than in the guess is scored with a white marble. Any digit that is not in the secret number does not get a marble. It’s up to you to determine which digits are indicated by the marbles. Can you figure out the four-digit number?
