ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
We are gladly & thankful to Director as well as Principal, Dr. V.N
Jasani and Head of the Departments Prof. M. M. Baraiya and our
faculties who give us a great guidance regarding training and
instruct us the importance of training in electrical field. So we
decided to take visit in 220KV Substation, Shapur
We are especially thankful to respected authority of GETCO,
Junagadh division because they granted us permission for taking
visit and assistant engineers of Shapur Substation who gave the
proper guidance to students and gave practical based approach
learning to students.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation Limited (GETCO) was
set up in May 1999 and is registered under the Companies Act,
1956. The Company was promoted by erstwhile Gujarat Electricity
Board (GEB) as its wholly owned subsidiary in the context of
liberalization and as a part of efforts towards restructuring of the
Power Sector. The company is now a subsidiary of Gujarat
UrjaVikas Nigam, the successor company to the GEB.
An electrical substation is a subsidiary station of an
electricity generation, transmission and distribution system where
voltage is transformed from high to low or the reverse using
transformers. Electric power may flow through several substations
between generating plant and consumer, and may be changed in
voltage in several steps.
A substation that has a step-up transformer increases the
voltage while decreasing the current, while a step-down transformer
decreases the voltage while increasing the current for domestic and
commercial distribution.

PURPOSE OF VISIT
Our main purpose for this visit is to be familiar with industrial
environment and to get practical knowledge of electrical power
transmission and distribution .one other purpose is how we can
decide our 8-semester project on industrial based.
Students of 6th semester Electrical Engineering will get the idea of
electrical power transmission and distribution. Students will also get
familiar with Transformer maintenance, circuit breaker,
Transformer isolator, bus bar, Protective relays, Lightening
arresters, Load break switches, Scada system, Current and voltage
Transformer And Battery room.

WHAT WE LEARN?
On 9th jan.,2016 (Saturday) at 09:45 am we reached at Shapur Sub
Station.
When We Reached,we saw the mainly 3 substation are there
1) 220/132 KV
2) 220/66 KV
3) 220/66 KV
At the begining one of the assistant engineer explained all the
essential component of the 220KV substation and explained one line
diagram of shapursubstation. In addition they explained about
SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) and various
programming done in control room.
After explanation of control room, the assistant engineer
gives one helmet for our head protection and we reach directly in
yard.
We saw in yard, many Electrical equipment are there.(Like,
lightening arrestor, Isolator, Circuit Breaker, Bundled Conductor,
Transformer, Busbar, Current And Voltage Transformer, Wave trap)
one assistant engineer gives totally details of all the equipment.
7 | P a g e
1) Lightening arrestor (LA) The work of LA is break (Cut) the on load line. The LA is operated
on SCADA based (automatically) and manually.
2) Circuit Breaker (CB)
The circuit breaker is a proctiondevice.generally the CB is
operate below condition.
Break the circuit automatic or manual under normal
condition.
Break the circuit when circuit is fault condition.
Make a circuit either remote control or manual under fault
condition.
In this substation SF6 circuit breaker are used.(other CB are
also used like, Air blast CB , vacuum CB, oil CB)
Some of the outstanding properties of SF6 making it desirable to
using power applications are:
1. High dielectric strength
2. Unique arc-quenching ability
3. Excellent thermal stability
4. Good thermal conductivity
3) Conductor The conductor are used In transfer power from one place to other
place.generally the material used in conductor are aluminum, copper
etc…
4) Transformer The work of transformer is voltage step or down without change in
frequency.Generallytransformers ratting in KVA or MVA.But this
substation 100 MVA transformer are used.
8 | P a g e
5) Current Transformer (CT) “Current transformer is a device which use the measure on load
current”. The Current transformer are connected in series.
6) Potential transformer (PT) “The potential transformer is a device which use the measure bus-
bar voltage. The potential transformer are connected in parallel.
7) Wave Trap
The function of wave trap is communication one substation to other
substation with the help of frequency.
8) Battery room There are three panel of battery source one is for PLCC, it is 48v,
two panels are 220v, and it is for relay operation and many more
application. These batteries are charged when AC supply is ON.

CONCLUSION
From this visit, we got the information and practical knowledge about Power
Distribution and Transmission. Student got the knowledge about different
protection devices used in substation. They got the idea how to read the one
line diagram of power substation using different symbols used in diagram.
Student cleared out practical knowledge of transformer as how it step down
voltage 220 KV to 132 KV.They also got knowledge about new SCADA
based system as you can operate substation by manually or by command
from computer using SCADA system and PLC programming. About 4
students were benefited from this visit as they got chance to discussion with
assistant engineers working at Substation.
