Welcome to the South Asian University, a wonderful place where we explore knowledge without borders through

quality education and co-operation.

We are a unique institution of learning dedicated to providing facilities of international standards and professional faculty to students and researchers drawn from every corner of South Asian region. The core objectives of the University consist of three elements i.e., building a culture of understanding and regional consciousness; nurturing a new class of liberal, bright and quality leadership and building the capacity of the region in Science, technology and other disciplines considered vital for inspiring the quality of life of the people. The University has a compulsory course, Introduction to South Asia so that students joining from different nations of South Asia have the benefit of acquiring some vital facets pertaining to the region. In addition, the University plans to establish a think tank within it as the Institute of South Asian Studies.

SAU campus, its classrooms, library, labs, cultural activities are filled with the vibrancy that comes from being a university that is committed to celebrating diversity and breaking boundaries to pursue together new knowledge and exploring new ideas.

The hostel available for both men and women students provides a place to them to live and

study together giving them an opportunity to form strong bonds and lifelong friendships. Students from different nationalities share rooms to create a special understanding among themselves. The library is well stocked with both print and electronic study and research material that provides access to journals and books from all over the world.

Even though we are a very young university, we have been able to make progressive strides on many a front. Our globally-recruited faculty, the dynamic course curricula designed with an international perspective and the state-of-the-art infrastructure are some of the aspects that reflect the aspirations of the university. Regular academic activities including seminars, conferences, workshops and distinguished lectures give our students exposure to global ideas and a chance to connect with extraordinary professionals from around the world representing various fields of knowledge. All these together seek to build leaders of tomorrow who would work for the progress of their people in an atmosphere of harmony and good will.

I invite you to come and explore the unique culture being evolved here and witness the rich diversity that is helping in shaping future leaders of the region with a fresh new perspective.

Since 2011, the Department of Sociology

has actively pursued the development

of an intensive and creative programme

of teaching and research that reflects an

alternative regional perspective. Initially, the

department was started by offering an M.A.

degree programme and then in 2013, M.Phil./

Ph.D. programmes in Sociology as well. Our

programmes offer a strong foundation in

the core discipline and an exposure to new

ideas that push thought beyond conventional

borders. However, the Department’s real

strength lies in the diversity of its faculty

and students in terms of their cultural and

intellectual backgrounds.

The M.A. programme in Sociology is for two

years, which is spread over four semesters.

Students take a combination of compulsory

courses that provide a critical foundation in the

discipline, and optional courses, where they

pursue topics of their interest. Students also

write a dissertation based on original primary

research under the guidance of a faculty

member. The total course has 64 credits.

The M.Phil./Ph.D. programme is for three

years, including one year of course work.

Students take compulsory and optional

courses with 16 credits and write a seminar

paper with 2 credits. Following the completion

of coursework, students carry out research

and write a dissertation under the supervision

of a faculty member.

Our programmes provide students a

multifaceted approach that is traditional and

contemporary, national and international,

local and regional. Students are taught in an

environment that keeps them abreast of the

mainstream while nudges them to be curious

towards other perspectives, equipping them

with conceptual and methodological tools to

critically understand societies and cultures.

The Department offers numerous forums for

extracurricular activities for the students,

conducts a regular seminar series, workshops

and conferences, and publishes its own

journal, Society and Culture in South Asia, in

collaboration with Sage Publications.

The Department of International

Relations at the South Asian University

while attentive to the global lineage(s)

of ideas and practices in world politics seeks

to widen the content of the international by

critically examining intellectual traditions

within South Asia as embedded in the larger

Asia. The intent is not to simplistically extol

the virtues of one kind of knowledge to the

detriment of the other, but on the contrary

enrich our notion of the international by

actively participating in a lively global

conversation aimed at critically scrutinizing

dominant discourses within the discipline

afresh.

The faculty of the Department share wide-

ranging research interests. These encompass

both mainstream theories and critical

approaches to the study of International

Relations, disciplinary histories of IR,

global political economy concerns and

international normative political theory. The

faculty also pursues teaching and research

interests in security and strategic studies,

peace and conflict-resolution approaches,

the study of regional and international

organizations, identity politics and the links

between cognition and world politics.

Collectively, we share an abiding curiosity

with regard to all facets that have a bearing

on the overall texture of politics in South

Asia. Popular culture in South Asia squarely

falls within our broad ambit of interest. We

ultimately seek to build a community of

scholars who normatively share an ontology

and consciousness of being simultaneously

both South Asian and global citizens.

We invite you to embark on what

promises to be a stimulating and timely

intellectual journey.

The Department of International Relations at the South Asian University while attentive to the global lineage(s) of ideas and practices in world politics seeks to widen our appreciation of the content of the international by interrogating intellectual traditions within South Asia as embedded in the larger Asia.

Future PlansAcademics

The South Asian University with a view

to expand its horizons is working on

many developments and initiatives in

its second phase. Launching of new faculties

is one of the top priorities of the university.

The following new Faculties are being

considered:

Faculty of Earth System Sciences

Faculty of Physical and Chemical Sciences

Faculty of Arts and Design

Faculty of Humanities

Faculty of Management

A Faculty of Undergraduate Studies

is also conceived at a later stage that

would conduct B.A./B.Sc. programme in

Humanities, Social Sciences and Physical and

Natural Sciences.

Institute of South Asian Studies (ISAS)

SAARC countries share a land mass that has

the Himalayan Mountain ranges on the North

and Bay of Bengal, Indian Ocean and Arabian

Sea towards the South. This land mass has

a common weather system dominated by

the South-Western Monsoon, common river

system with shared rivers that flow from one

country to the other, a long common coast

line and indeed a shared cultural heritage.

As a result, SAARC countries also have many

shared challenges. There are, for example,

issues of water resources with a plenty in

monsoon season and deficiency in other

months. The intra-SAARC ecosystems are

such that disasters like floods, landslides,

earth quakes and epidemics in one part of

the region can, and do, immensely affect

other regions. SAARC countries may also

complement each other in supply and

demand of crucial resources. Hydro-electric

/ geo-thermal and oil/gas potential of some

countries may meet the energy needs of the

rest. Similarly, there are issues of migration of

people, public policies, terrorism and general

governance itself that are shared concerns in

the region. In order to tackle such common

problems, SAU is in the process of establishing

an Institute of South Asian Studies (ISAS)

where scholars from throughout the SAARC

region will work together to find appropriate

solutions.

The list of shared concerns can be limitless,

and so can the strategic academic approaches

to address them. Some illustrative focus areas

of ISAS are:

Natural Resource Conservation

Energy studies

Biodiversity Conservation

Study of Environmental Issues

Weather patterns

Monitoring of regional Epidemics

Public policies and governance

Preservation of cultural heritage

Regional natural disaster management

Terrorism and Conflict Resolution

Globalization and regional trade

Psychology including contemplative

(M.A. International Relations - Class of 2014)

Lecturer, Al Qiyaas University, Afghanistan)

They say SAU is a research-oriented university. And it truly is. I spent

two years at SAU and one of the things which gives me a comparative

advantage at the job market is the ability to do quality research. The

emphasis on assignments at SAU teaches you everything about research.

Adding to this, SAU graduates are South Asian experts through experience and interaction with

SAARC students.

Mustafizur Rahman

(M.Sc. Applied Mathematics - Class of 2014)

South Asian University has set the stage for the students from the

SAARC nations in bringing together the students from all diversities

and cultures and with the highly experienced faculty it is acting as a

springboard, facilitating the students to sail through their academic

period with ease and comfort.

Many students of SAU have taken up numerous important positions in academic organisations, think tanks and research institutes and each alumnus carries the message of Regional Consciousness.

Alumni Speak:

Nizamuddin Ahmed Siddique

(LLM - Class of 2013) Assistant Professor, West Bengal National University

for Juridical Sciences, Kolkata, India

Having been a student of the first batch, I have no doubts in saying that

South Asian University has perhaps one of the best Masters programmes

in Law in India. The placement rate has been high with most students

getting placed in academics, research, judiciary or public services. Many of

them have even gone back to their respective countries to join policy-making institutions. It feels

really good to be a part of the prosperous smaller world of the South Asian community.

Mahamudul Hasan

(M.Sc. Computer Science - Class of 2013)

It was my great pleasure to be a part of a novel idea of bringing South

Asian students together under a single roof. I had a great opportunity

to get the taste of multicultural diversity of different nations around this

region. The university provides an environment where people can share

their views, ideas, and joys and can get the opportunity to know each other

very firmly. Now we are starting to think together to bring back our unity towards a prosperous

South Asia. My cogitation of research has been changed after I engaged with the university. The

university showed me the path that “How to think broadly with a broader sense.

Surbhi Kesar

(M.A. Development Economics - Class of 2014)

South Asian University for me extends way beyond the definition of an

academic institution but is rather an experience in itself to explore the

richness of possibilities and opportunities in the South Asian region.

The knowledge gained, the friendships made, the common lunch tables

and festivities for students from eight different counties with diverse pasts,

has been an enrichment of our “South Asian-ness” and holds the hope of

integration unmatched, unseen and unprecedented.

Bivek Timalsina

(M.Sc. Biotechnology - Class of 2012) Lecturer at Nobel College, Kathmandu,

Nepal, Teaching Virology, Pharmaceutical Microbiology and Analytical

Chemistry instrumentation for B.Sc. Microbiology and B. Sc. M.L.T.

I believe that SAU is really the best place to learn about South Asia and

the World. The multicultural environment, latest laboratory technologies,

and capable instructors at SAU furnished me with a solid academic

foundation and skills.

Aatina Malik

(M.A Sociology - Class of 2014)

SAU helps you do Sociology in a creative way. It engages you with the

everyday and lets you have a dialogue with it making vivid that ‘sociology’

is out there in your vicinity rather than confining you to the academic

texts alone. In short, the experience of studying sociology at SAU has

been engrossing and fascinating!

Initially, when I joined, the place looked difficult and people strange, but now, if you ask me how do

I feel about the place? I would say, “if ever I’m given a chance to re-live any part of my life, it would

be these two years at SAU” Studying and living here somehow makes that essence of South Asia a

part of you forever. I listen to more of Afghan music now, watch more Pakistani serials and have this

grave desire to be well-informed about the region and be connected to its people.

Proposed Campus

The proposed campus of the South

Asian University is coming up at Maidan

Garhi in New Delhi on a plot of about

100 acres provided by the Government of

India. An eminent international jury finalised

an imaginative urban design master plan of

the campus submitted by a Nepalese firm

through a SAARC wide design competition. The

campus will house faculty buildings, hostels,

playgrounds, residential apartments, shopping

centres and a club among others. Almost all

statutory approvals and clearances have been

obtained and the construction is expected to

start soon.
