Dear Brothers and Sisters,
It was such a pleasure to return to our home base and see all of your familiar faces. You truly brighten eachmonth for me, as I always leave feeling like I’m a part of a family—a big extended family that laughs and chatstogether, eats together, and celebrates life together. Every meeting we have surpasses my expectations.
That being said, there is a contrasting theme which has become an apparent and increasing issue across theorganization as a whole. Since the beginning of the year, there have been several canceled events outside ofour Lodge. These events lacked participation and interest, and have therefore been nixed from the schedule.Across the country, Sons of Norway faces a serious problem—membership. Brooklyn Lodge, however, mustbe doing something right—because we seem to attract new interest with each month’s meeting. This is a verygood sign for us, as it is in no way the norm with many other Lodges.
So I would like to take a moment to congratulate you all—our members and our board. I can pinpoint thereason others keep gravitating to us. Though the reason is obvious, I feel it needs to be addressed andcommended.
You have a spirit—a realness and a warmth—that elevates the room and all within it—this spirit garners asense of fun and fraternity. This is not something that can be faked, invented, or feigned. This kind ofpresence can only come from the heart.
In this new world of digital avatars we deal with a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it’s amazing howwe can now stay in touch with others that we would never have dreamed of speaking with so many yearslater—old school mates, friends, even family from decades ago or far away. On the other hand, we have less tosay and less time to say it—we are boiled down to representing ourselves with a few photos and tag-linesabout our daily lives.
People miss in-person events. And what they miss most about them are the exact kinds of moments that wekeep having with our meetings. Moments filled with REAL joy, real laughter, and real people. People withstories and jokes, and most importantly, smiles. The kinds of smiles that light you up from inside.
SO KEEP BEING YOURSELVES! Because what we’re trying to do is WORKING, and you being you is ahuge part of it.
Fraternally yours,

We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day during our “after summerholiday break” Lodge meeting. For the last two years we have had a BBQmeeting and it might just become a tradition. Adam Patrick manned thegrill and compliments to the chef keep pouring in. We think many of ourguests and members were especially pleased with the Nathans hotdogsserved. We discussed upcoming events as well as the Memorial Service beingheld at Our Saviors Lutheran Church on Sunday, September 27.
We had several guests, who are always welcomed, as well as our loyal guestsfrom Faeder Lodge. Alice introduced our very special member, OddbjorgOlsen and couldn’t contain her joy in announcing this womans greatacheivements. At the tender age of 85, Oddbjorg has completed her milesneeded for the Sykkelmerke Gold Medal for Cycling as well as completingher goal for the Enamel Medal for Sykkelmerke! This woman can’t be heldback from anything put in front of her, and we all joined in cheering heracheivements. (Did we mention that she is 85? She whispered to me that she feelslike she is only 15...). ■

Ski For Light
At our September BBQ Lodge meeting, Alice mentioned Ski For Light andwhat a wonderful thing it is. Alice and Njål had participated in one of theirevents and how inspiring it was. This got me thinking, I have no idea whatSki For Light is, or what they do. I thought since my family likes to ski, whynot investigate? Then, I received Vikingmagazine and they have the full backpage announcing their upcoming event!
Ski For Light was founded by Norwegian ski legend Olav Petersen in 1975,and modeled after the Riderrrenn (Knight’s Race) held annually in Norway. The mission is to enhance the quality of life and independence of visuallyor mobility-impaired adults through a program of cross-country skiing. Itdoesn’t just touch lives, it changes them. Disabled athletes discover the
essential truth in the Ski For Light motto: If I can do this, I can doanything. And guides discover just how good it feels to share somethingthey love with someone who never dreamed they might have that experience.
Just ask Alice and Njål Svege what they experienced, and you will hear allthe rewards a volunteer walks away with, which I am sure is nothing incomparrison to what the participants experience.
This year, Ski For Light International will be holding its 41st annualInternational week, Sunday, January 24, to Saturday, January 30, at ShantyCreek Resorts in Bellaire, Michigan. ■

Johan Christian Dahl
Often known as J. C. Dahl or I. C. Dahl, (February 24, 1788 – October 14,1857), was a Norwegian artist who is considered the first great romanticpainter in Norway, the founder of the golden age of Norwegian painting, andone of the greatest European artists of all time. He is often described as thefather of Norwegian landscape painting and is regarded as the first NorwegianPainter ever to reach a level of artistic accomplishment comparable to thatattained by the greatest European artists of his day. He was also the firstacquire genuine fame and cultural renown abroad. As one critic has put it,J.C. Dahl occupies a central position in Norwegian artistic life of the first half of the19th century.
Although Dahl spent much of his life outside of Norway, his love for hiscountry is clear in the motifs he chose for his paintings and in hisextraordinary efforts on behalf of Norwegian culture generally. Indeed, ifone sets aside his own monumental artistic creations, his other activities onbehalf of art, history, and culture would still have guaranteed him a place atthe very heart of the artistic and cultural history of Norway. He was, forexample, a key figure in the founding of the Norwegian National Gallery andof several other major art institutions in Norway, as well as in thepreservation of Norwegian stave churches and the restoration of the NidarosCathedral in Trondheim and Håkonshallen in Bergen. ■

It is our Lodge’s intent to help preserve the traditions and history of the Norwegianand American Norwegian culture. Our Lodge sits in a unique place, near the bridgethat connects these two countries. Many of those who came from Norway in the1900’s landed in Brooklyn, and several families stayed for generations—raising theirchildren, and then their American-born grandchildren.
Woven into our history are both sides of the story. Where we come from, and whatit was like for our relatives to live in full communities together in America.
Lodge Brooklyn has a reputation amongst other Lodges of the Sons of Norway asbeing one of the most fun, down to earth, and lighthearted groups within theorganization. We always have a good time as we gather and share past memories andcreate new ones in a fun, warm, and welcoming environment. ■

Norwegian Butter Cookies
• Preheat oven to 350°F.
• Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt.
• Beat together butter, sugar, and extracts in a large bowl with an electric mixer atmoderately high speed until pale and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Add egg and beat well.Add flour mixture and mix at low speed until just combined.
• Quarter dough and put 1 piece into cookie press. Holding press slightly aboveungreased baking sheets, squeeze out dough to form cookies (follow manufacturer'sinstructions), spacing them about 3 inches apart. Form more cookies with remainingdough in same manner.
• Bake cookies in batches in middle of oven until edges are golden, 10 to 15 minutes, then transfer with a metal spatula to racks to cool.
Cooks’ notes: If you don’t have a cookie press, you can form dough into 11/2 inch balls, thenflatten to 1/3 to 1/2 inch thick with back of a fork, making a crosshatch design on top of cookies.
• Cookies keep in an airtight container at room temperature 3 weeks.
