Why Would Safe Haven Deny An Adoption Application? There are many policies and procedures involved in adopting a pet, and at times it can seem to be a drawn-out process. But there’s one simple reason for this: Safe Haven wants to make sure the pets, many
whom have been saved from illness, abuse and death, are placed in permanent, loving homes where they will be spoiled and pampered for the rest of their lives. Although there’s no way to determine for certain whether a potential adopter can provide the perfect home, we try hard, which means we do a lot of work in screening our applicants.
If an adoption application is denied, the most likely reason is that we received more than one application for that particular pet. We can only choose one home for each pet and we need to choose the one where we feel that particular pet will be happy, safe and loved. Not all pets will do well in every home situation.
When there is only one application received on a pet, the application can be denied for one of these reasons:
• Inaccuracies on the application. Yes, we can tell!
• The adopter’s situation is unsafe. Safe Haven will not place a pet in a home where its safety is in question.
• It isn’t a good match. You might think Fluffy is the perfect cat for you, but Safe Haven may think otherwise. We know the pet and what it needs in terms of its perfect home. If it isn’t a good match, don’t get mad. Talk to the Safe Haven staff about another Safe Haven pet that might be even more perfect for you.
• Your references don’t recommend you. If your references can’t recommend you as a pet owner, Safe Haven will deny the application.
• Red flags. Okay, this is the single biggest reason shelters reject applicants, even though it’s a completely subjective one. If an applicant lies to us, argues with or bullies the shelter staff, or otherwise antagonizes us, that’s it. If an applicant treats staff poorly, will they then treat the pet poorly?
Remember, Safe Haven doesn’t exist to supply people with pets; our mission is to find the best qualified home for needy pets.

Walk Your Dog – Help Safe Haven!
Have you heard about the new Smart phone app called
Wooftrax?
It’s a dog-powered fund raising tool for animals shelters and rescues across America. Safe Haven has
already received the first check this month. All you have
to do is download the app from www.wooftrax.com, select Safe
Haven as your shelter, grab the leash and your dog and hit the road!
The Birdies for Charity program is sponsored by the John Deere Corporation in conjunction with the John Deere Classic golf tournament (July 6-12, 2015) and provides a fun way to make your donation to Safe Haven go further. The basic idea is that you contribute a penny for each birdie that is made by the players. Last year, a penny pledge would have resulted in a $20.40 contribution (2040 birdies were made). You can also contribute a fixed amount of any size. On the odd chance you actually guess the correct number of birdies, you could win a very nice prize, up to a new automobile. Stay tuned for more information and pledge forms later this spring.

Safe Haven Dog Becomes a Therapy Dog
By Barb Jansz and Michelle Polly
After retiring from 30 years in Special Ed at River Ridge School District, Becky Pierce found time for volunteer work. She soon began her work as an Honor Flight volunteer in Dubuque. When that disbanded, she began to look for another volunteer opportunity.
After her old dog died, she began looking more carefully at the photos of dogs on Safe Haven’s Facebook page. One day, the beautiful eyes of little Ralphie caught her attention. The cute Yorkie-Poodle mix was described as saying he would make a wonderful Therapy Dog. That was a new, but intriguing thought for her.
Those words stayed with Becky and upon adopting Ralphie, Gwen told her about a Therapy Dog International class at Carlson’s Canine Camp in Freeport. Soon, she and Ralphie were enrolled in the class. There she met two Safe Haven Board Members who were also enrolled with their dogs, and a commuting friendship between the ladies and their dogs began.
The class prepared the dogs for a Therapy Dog International test which would allow them to be certified for therapy work in hospitals, nursing homes, library and school programs.
The six week course ends with a TDI test, which has 13 individual testing exercises
designed to simulate visitations at a facility with a therapy dog. It reflects realistic situations a therapy dog may encounter. Becky wasn’t sure if Ralphie was ready to pass the Therapy Dog test, but he did -with flying colors - as did his new friends, Sterling and Ollie!
Animal Assisted Therapy is a healthcare ministry, where the dogs get to deliver therapy that warms the heart, lowers blood pressure, and takes the mind off pain, and just plain feels good! Studies have shown the benefits include decreasing stress and depression, slowing the heart rate, calming fears and even shortening the length of stay. It also improves the job satisfaction of health care workers too.
Becky and Ralphie are enjoying their Therapy Dog work at the Elizabeth Nursing Home and the Midwest Medical Center in Galena. They are also a familiar site on the streets of Elizabeth as they enjoy their walks through town.
Submitted by Barb Jansz and Sterling, and Michelle Polly and Oliver with special thanks to Carolyn Norton, for her encouragement in getting involved with TDI. More information on Therapy Dog Training:

Birthday Party Raises $500+ for Safe Haven
For my 60th birthday, I decided to host a party for friends and family. I planned to include a “No gifts, please” request on the invite. But I also know that it’s difficult to honor such a request. (I’ve been guilty myself of bringing a gift despite a “No gifts, please” request.)
Knowing that most guests would like to bring a gift to a milestone birthday celebration, I wanted to channel that good intention to a charity. I asked my guests to consider making a donation to one of two charities, including Safe Haven, in lieu of bringing a gift for me.
Well, it worked! We raised $1,100 that evening with half designated for Safe Haven. My husband, Gary, and I are very familiar with the good work performed at the shelter because we adopted one of our dogs from Safe Haven.
We had lots of fun on my birthday eating great food, toasting good times with longtime friends and dancing to live music. Adding to the fun -- knowing that the animals at Safe Haven would benefit from the celebration, too.
I am writing this article to encourage others who are hosting a special event to consider asking guests to make a donation to Safe Haven rather than bring a gift. The gesture will be easy, fun and very rewarding – for you and your guests.

Hi Gwen!
Sorry I have not sent pictures earlier. We have been so busy with Grace! She is adjusting very well. It took her a couple days to calm down but now she is making herself right at home. It seems as though she has always been a part of our family.
She is still learning how to play nicely with my little Gus (Auggie!) and my brother’s two little puppies. Sometimes I think she forgets how big she is! We introduce them in small doses and so far it’s going well.
Grace has been very busy this summer. She has been on our pontoon (a couple times!), and visited our family in Lake Delhi. She loves to be around the water and always wants to chase squirrels. Grace is getting better at going on walks and her favorite play time is chasing her tennis ball in our big, open field. She has been the sweetest addition to our family!

It’s been a busy two days. Gidget has been so good. Some jealousy issues between Gidget and Misty. I am going to go out to a local trainer today and ask about what I can do to help the jealousy issues.
This morning was the most beautiful thing I ever saw with any dog. I wish I had it on video. Gidget got up first this morning so I had her in my chair giving her lots of love. Then Misty came out, of course Gidget jumped down to greet her. At this time Misty jumped up in my chair. The chair can only handle one dog comfortably at a time. So I am petting Gidget while she is on the floor in front of the chair and at the same time petting Misty. All of a sudden Gidget stood up on her hind legs in front of us and put her nose in front of Misty, (before this they would have growled at each other while I was in the chair wanting attention), then she took her paw and raised it at Misty as to touch her gently, they both got really close and very calm. It was so special it brought tears to my eyes and still does. It was as if Gidget was saying please let me be friends so I can stay here too. It was beautiful. Thank you again for this very special dog Gidget, I am going to send some pictures soon.

I have been meaning to send a picture of Reckless (formerly known as Banjo) in the green scarf. He immediately fit right into the family, two legged and four legged (except maybe one of the cats thinks he may not be an asset to the family) when we brought him home in September. First night at home he jumped onto my bed with his big brother, Rebel (red scarf), and has been making himself at home in his forever home ever since. At the dog park Reckless loves to run but always looks back to make sure he knows where I am. He is great when at work with me and we are just beginning to practice agility, but he maybe too fast for me! Thank you to Safe Haven for rescuing Reckless and all the others.

This is Charlie “formerly Dobbey “ that we adopted from Safe Haven two and a half years ago. It was the best decision we have made. We just came in from a cold brisk walk. Brrrrr, cold outside.. Gail S.

Darla here. I wanted to thank you for letting me be adopted a couple of weeks ago. I have a wonderful yard that I get to explore. I also have a swing I sit in with my mom and she reads while I peruse my yard. If it isn’t too hot or raining we spend time in the yard for my new mom does a lot of work in her yard. She also takes me for wonderful walks around town. We meet up with other people but I am a little shy around them yet.
I have adjusted very well to my new home. I have my own bed that I sleep in at night. My mom lets me lay on her lap while she knits or reads.
I went to the doggie beauty parlor. I got a bath and a little trim. The next day I went to see the veterinarian and she was really nice and even gave me a treat. Except for a small infection in my year, I was pronounced healthy. Mom has been putting drops in my ear to clear up the infection and I will go back to see the vet in a couple of weeks to make sure it is all well.
Thank you for taking such good care of me while I stayed at Safe Haven and my mom says thank you for letting her adopt me.
Darla and Judy C.Gwen -- I just wanted to drop you a quick note to tell you how much I LOVE TINKERBELLE! She is such a little love! Thank you so much for letting me adopt her! When she first arrived at the house, she ran as fast as she could through all the rooms with her little tail wagging! She really loves it here and she helps to make my house a home. I think I needed her more than she needed me :)
Thanks again,
Tinkerbelle’s New Mom, Karen
PS -- Tinkerbelle is now Sadie (after my Grandma!)
I’m not sure if you will remember them, but Taylor and Belle were the first 2 kitties adopted from your new facility. As you can see this brother and sister still care about each other very much and Thank You for making sure that they got a great home.
We all wish you a very Merry Christmas, Mike, Beth, Taylor & Belle
Here’s a picture of Simon (adopted in 2011). He and Sadie love to run and play, inside and out. He is so adorable, loves everyone, also going for car-jeep rides. John & Shirley W.
Hi Gwen,
I’m sorry I’m so late with photos of dear Gromit, aka Rocket, but here they are. We’re enjoying every minute with Rocket and he has fully adapted to being part of the crazy Lockhart family. He is such a wonderful addition to our entire family. One thing we’ve found out about Rocket is that he is terrified of rain and storms, hence, the scratch on his nose in the photos. I’m not exactly sure what he tried to crawl under to get away from the rain, but he scratched his nose during the process. He hasn’t been alone during rain or storms and he does settle down, but it takes a very long time. The poor little guy is terrified.
Take care and thank you for giving us an opportunity to have Rocket in our family.

We are always thrilled to hear about the lucky ones we find homes for. Won’t you
please send us a note and a picture and tell us how your pet is doing?
Hi there!
Pearly Sue re-named Buster is doing excellent at the Kramer household. Buster gets along with her older sister Bella. They love to play tug of war. Buster has a zest for life, playing, hiking and running. We have been to Utica & Matthiessen State parks in Illinois where we hiked for 6 miles. We recently enjoyed going to the Maquoketa Caves hiking. Buster enjoys taking rides in the car. She
is extremely well behaved in the car. When we ask Bella & Buster if they want to go for a ride they get so excited! They love looking out the car windows. Buster is a little shy around bigger dogs, we work on that by playing with other dogs as much as we can. We walk 4 – 6 times a week about 1 -2 miles each time. Buster loves it! She is fantastic with children of all ages; she is patient and kind with them. Thank you Safe Haven for all the work you do for animals. We love Buster and wanted to share with you that she is doing awesome! She was a wonderful addition to our family and we love her so much. She gets plenty of kisses and hugs at our house.

Merry Christmas to All –
Pierre has been with us since April, 2014. He is a love and we love him. He’s everybody’s buddy and loves to play and run, almost with a smile on his face.
We are enclosing pictures and our donation – thank you for all the good work you do at Safe Haven.

Dear Auntie Gwen –
Since I was adopted, I have acquired a new brother, his name is Midnight, he is from Tennessee. He is 4 years old. We get along and make sure all the squirrels stay out of the yard. Just to let you know, I always have a lap to lay in when I am tired. So again I want to say “thank you”.
Love, Mikey (on right)
