SAW Newsletter
Vol. 36 No. 3
March 2020
HART SENIOR CENTER
915 27th St, Sacramento, CA
(Between I & J Streets)
NEXT MEETING:
Tuesday, March 3, 2020
7:00 to 9:00 PM
Speaking of projects and tools. Some of our General Membership has some great expertise. Richard Fuller will be sharing with us how to, “Design and Build a Functional Workbench,” at the next General Meeing on March 3, 2020, at 7:00 PM.
We don't have a contest this month so hopefully we will have a number of peo-ple that can bring in their 'Show and Tell' projects for all of us to see instead.
With your membership comes the ben-efits of our Special Interest Groups (SIG’s). So make sure you get the im-portant dates in the newsletter on your calendar so you can enhance your knowledge and skills that incorporate topics related to the following: Lathe work (hopefully soon), Scroll Saw work, Toy building, Furniture making, and our Novice skill program.
A new item that may be of interest to members is an opportunity to Carpool to our General Meetings. Please let our Treasurer - Kathy Braun know if you have an interest in Carpooling, and she will see if she can coordinate with an-other member to make this happen. I know I usually Carpool to the meeting and it is a great way to travel for night

President’s Message
Well, Spring is sup-posed to be here soon based on the Groundhog not see-ing his shadow. With this, suppos-edly, winter has al-ready come to an end. Not good for all those Snow Ski-
ers, but you never know - fluke weather can arrive any time this month. Based on the weather not providing much precipita-tion for February it appears that spring projects may be able to start sooner than later.
At the February meeting, Charles Linn stepped in for the planned DeWalt Sales Representative, who fell ill. Charles gave a talk on DeWalt products, that hopefully everyone enjoyed as much as I did. We are looking into rescheduling the DeWalt Sales Representative in the future when the opportunity presents itself.

Lastly, if you have not renewed your membership yet. This is a final remind-er to renew your SAW membership dues before your newsletter lapses. Bring your check to the next meeting and give it to Kathy Braun or mail it in if this is more convenient. A renewal form is available at the meeting or contact any board member and we will assist you if additional assistance is neces-sary. Remember, in March, we have our yearly drawing for a member to win their membership dues back!
If you were at the February General Meeting, you saw a lot of tools out for the members to take. All we were ask-ing is for a donation to the Club. Well, those donation raised $288 (and that does not include the DeWalt plunge router I won in the large raffle). These items were donated to SAW by the es-tate of a former member, Harold Hub-bard. More of his tools will be showing up in future raffles, starting this month.
Thanks again for your continued SAW involvement. We will see you at the next monthly meeting on March 3
rd.

Classified Ads
SAW members have been coming up with many great ideas, such as how to network with other members out-side of SIGs, or creating ways to borrow set-up tools. Might we suggest using the classified ad section?
Ads can be run for more than one month. Just contact us each month and let us know the ad is still valid. Remem-ber, you must be a member to take advantage of our free ad space!
HELPING HANDS
SAW has a mentor program. This is how it works:
• If you need help with wood-working tools or a project - call ANDI Brewer
• if you have woodworking skills and knowledge to share - call ANDI Brewer
Our club’s mentoring program is in action: Last month Bruce assisted Gil in setting up the precision on his jointer. This month, Mary Lynn requested an assist with her new table saw which resulted in getting familiar with safe us-age and building a sled. Bruce worked together with these SAW members to help with their requests for aid. And there was a lot of good mentoring going on in the Toy Workshop for the new members.
SIG Information
A “SIG” (Special Interest Group) is a gathering of woodworkers at a member’s workshop to discuss and do projects related to the Group’s interest. Any SAW member or guest of a SAW member may just show up at the meeting. Times and locations for each SIG is given in the Calendar on page 3.
Lathe SIG Contact person: Jim Cauley
There will be no Lathe SIG for awhile as Jim was injured in a fall. He will return to the shop in the future. Stay tuned.
Scroll Saw SIG Contact person: Holly Lovvo
February’s scroll saw SIG had two attendees, and the weather couldn’t have been better. We did have an issue come up - we ran out of coffee! Richard has restocked, so it won’t be an issue in March.
For March, I am not sure what the main project will be, but as always we have plenty of projects on hand. All experi-ence ranges are welcome, from the beginner who never used the saw before to the expert user who wants to make tower clocks. Let us know what you are interested in, and we will have the patterns and supplies ready.
If you cannot make it on the scheduled day, give us a call and we can schedule a time that works. Happy scrolling!
Furniture Projects SIG Contact person: Richard and Herb Fuller
Richard will finish the panel and rail construction of the lid for his toolbox tray (see below). We will discuss where to go from here. Bring project and/or techniques in which you are interested.
Novice SIG Contact person: Gerry Holmquist
The carcass construction that was started in February will be completed in March by adding a half-lap face frame to the carcass, drawer fronts, and a glued up top (also started last month).

The photo in the upper left shows the burl table top that Herb was finishing in the January Furniture SIG. For Febru-ary, Richard showed us the lid he is building for one of the trays in his English-style tool chest (center top photo). The construction is walnut rail and stile with maple burl panels (from the same piece as the table top). Richard had com-pleted making the rails, cutting in tenons, and cutting the panels. He had finished trimming the haunched tenon on one end (right top) and demonstrated how he measured and cut the tenon on the other end (bottom left). The cut needed a bit of trimming with a chisel to fit correctly. Richard will finish the trimming, fitting and finishing in March.

Toy Time
Well, 2020 is here and we are moving forward fast. Twelve eager members arrived and jumped into action at the Toy Workshop this month. We cut out 15 pieces for toys, then sanded, drilled, routed, and attached wheels to these cute wooden caterpillars (second from right in last row of photos). In addi-tion, we have some new novice members who are learning to use the equip-ment in the workshop at Woodcraft. Many of our Toy Workshop participants are expert woodworkers and step up to assist those, includ-ing me, who need help. (First three photos last row.)
Next month, March 18th, our Toy Workshop at Woodcraft on Folsom Blvd. will be headed up by Steve Bockman. He will be providing material, sharing his ideas and instructing us on building toy cars (see below). Because we will be working with Maple wood, I am requesting that you please bring dust masks. Working with Maple wood will cause very fine saw dust and protection is necessary.
As always, remember you get a discount at the Woodcraft store for those attending the Toy Workshop. So come join us for fun and education on building toy cars on Wednesday, March 18, 2020 from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
ANDI Brewer
In the February Novice SIG, Gerry built a case using the router-based joinery technique he showed in January. The case houses the drawers made in January. For this design, the size of the case is obtained based on the drawer size itself. The same tongue and dado scheme was used to mount the top and bottom pieces and the shelf for the drawer for the drawer to slide in on. The depths of the dados and a space allowance for the draw to expand and contract were added to the drawer size. This case will be completed in the March Novice SIG with a face frame, drawer fronts, and a top.
