How to (Correctly) Measure Ingredients Carefully read the measuring handout. As you read, look for how each of the measuring tools are different from one another Did you notice how you decide which tool to use? Abbreviations, Equivalents & Kitchen Math Have you ever wondered what symbols you need to understand when you read a recipe? Abbreviations and equivalents help to decipher the baking “code”. Read through this activity and then answer the Math Skills, BONUS, and Adjusting Recipes Math questions. Kitchen Utensils Test your (and your family’s) knowledge about common kitchen utensils used in baking and cooking. Look at the picture and try to identify what the item is. Knife Safety Read through the knife safety tips. Choose 1 tip and create your own original “Knife Safety” comic strip. Your strip should be thoughtfully illustrated and colored (if possible). WILD CARD Look up a recipe that you would love to make sometime. This can be online or in a cookbook you have at home. Make a list of every measurement you find in the recipe. ( 1 cup, 2 tsp., etc.). This is used to beat, blend and incorporate air into foods and is turned manually by hand. 5. This is used to brush butter or sauces on food. 6. This is a round cup attached to a long handle and are used for serving punch and/or soups. 7. This is used for baking cakes. 8. This is used to flip pancakes or remove cookies from cookie sheet and contains slots. 9. These can be used to measure liquid or dry ingredients and comes as a set. 10. This is used to scrape bowls and saucepans and is very flexible. 11. These are large and round and used for baking pizza. 12. These are oblong pans with round depressions and used for baking muffins or cupcakes.
