Dear Residents

The first half of 2016 has been nothing short of eventful for our community.

You will notice that there has been a new change in the newsletter – we have officially changed our name to “Sayang Sembawang”. This is in line with the community campaign, which you may have seen at MRT stations or coffee shops in Sembawang GRC from last year. It is our hope that all of us can come together and love our neighbourhood and community – to ‘Sayang Sembawang’ together. Whenever you see something that you love about Sembawang, why not share it with us, using the hashtag #sayangsembawang?

That’s not the only change either. Sembawang Town Council has moved to new premises since 9 May 2016 (Page 3) to better serve all residents. Do take note of our new address, as well as other important contact details. There are also exciting new developments

taking place in Sembawang GRC – the North South Corridor, the new Canberra MRT station and the temporary bus interchange at Woodlands (Pages 4-5), to name a few!

Meanwhile, this issue of Sayang Sembawang is full of celebration and festivity. Read on for more details about events like the Lunar New Year celebrations (Pages 6 - 7) and the return of the highly anticipated Chingay @ North 2016 (Pages 8 - 9). Together, we also remembered Mr Lee Kuan Yew on the first anniversary of his passing (Page 10) and built deeper bonds together at Canberra Day 2016 (Page 11).

We have a strong and dynamic community growing here in Sembawang GRC. Let’s continue to sayang our home, sayang our Sembawang together.

Dr Lim Wee Kiak, PBMChairman

TO NEWWHY SAYANG SEMBAWANG?

You may have seen the phrase “Sayang Sembawang” since last year, whether on posters at the MRT station, coffee shops or at community events, and wondered what it means.

“Sayang Sembawang” is a community campaign that was launched to encourage residents of Sembawang GRC to come together and love (sayang in Malay) our neighbourhood and

our home together. In the campaign, residents of all races and ages shared their thoughts, feelings and memories from living in Sembawang GRC – how it is a place filled with lush greenery, rich history and heritage, but most of all, an enduring kampung spirit.

Residents also shared on social media, using the hashtag #sayangsembawang, the things, places and people who make Sembawang GRC home. The name “Sayang Sembawang” has indeed been a heartwarming initiative which encouraged our residents to take ownership of and reflect on their love for our home and community.

Our newsletter name “Hearttalk” had served us well in the past years. It is our hope that as we embrace a strong Sembawang identity of kampung spirit, the name “Sayang Sembawang” will be a fitting name that truly represents the warm community we have here.

THE NORTH-SOUTH

SEMBAWANG’S NATURAL HOT SPRING

A quicker connection from the North to the city by bus? Being able to cycle directly into the heart of the city? Yes, please – all thanks to the upcoming North-South Corridor!

The North-South Expressway – originally conceived as a 21.5km expressway to connect towns in the North to the city centre – is being redesigned as North-South Corridor (NSC) to better enable cycling and walking. The NSC will be Singapore’s first

Sembawang is well known for its green landscapes and rustic qualities – which makes it fitting that the only natural hot spring

in Singapore should be found here! Located at the junction of Sembawang Road and Gambas Avenue, along Jalan Ulu Sembawang, residents usually bring their own buckets and basins to fill them with spring water from the taps, while enjoying a chat with their neighbours.

In the Committee of Supply debate held on 12 April 2016, Dr Lim Wee Kiak, MP for Canberra Division, suggested that the area around the hot springs could be developed into a national hot springs park. "Many are still not aware of the existence of a hot spring in Singapore and even if they know, many not have visited it. I hope NParks can upgrade the place to let the hot

spring flow into shallow pools for the public to enjoy in a relaxing garden environment."

Minister Ong Ye Kung, MP for Gambas Division further added that the Sembawang MPs have been working with various Government agencies, including the Ministry of National Development, to “beautify the place and put in some amenities”.

However both MPs Minister Ong and Dr Lim were in agreement with the public sentiment against the commercialisation of the spring, and urged for special efforts to be taken to help the hot springs retain its “kampung” setting, while providing for some basic amenities for residents who visit the area.

Look out for more updates on the Sembawang Hot Spring in time to come!

CORRIDORintegrated transport corridor featuring continuous bus lanes and cycling trunk routes. The dedicated bus lanes for express bus services will reduce travelling time from Woodlands, Sembawang, and Yishun to the city by up to 30 minutes and also make bus connections between residential towns along the NSC faster.

Along the surface, cyclists can look forward to cycling into the city via a dedicated cycling path – a trunk route to link the cycling network along the NSC – that will link up to Park Connector Networks and the dedicated cycling path networks within HDB towns along the entire corridor to the city centre.

Stay tuned for more updates on the North-South Corridor!

NEW CANBERRA STATION IN 2019SEMBAWANG RESIDENTS GET

Great news for Sembawang residents! The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has commenced works to

construct the new Canberra MRT station along the North-South Line. Located between Sembawang and Yishun stations and along Canberra Link, Canberra station will serve commuters living in nearby estates such as Sembawang Springs, as well as upcoming residential developments in the neighbourhood.

Woodlands commuters can look forward to a newly upgraded Woodlands Regional Bus Interchange

in 2019. The 20-year-old Woodlands Regional Bus Interchange will be upgraded and linked to the upcoming Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) and existing NSL Woodlands MRT stations via an underpass.

To facilitate the upgrading, the existing interchange has been temporarily relocated, from March 12, to an adjacent site along Woodlands Square. The temporary interchange is accessible via sheltered linkways from Woodlands MRT station and Causeway Point shopping mall.

The Woodlands Temporary Bus Interchange comes with a host of

innovative features – particularly those that assist people in need. Dedicated priority queue zones located next to boarding berths will give seniors, expectant mothers and people with disabilities priority in boarding buses. These priority queue zones will also be fitted with seats for these groups of commuters to rest while waiting for buses.

The elderly and those who require assistance to get around the interchange can hop on to buggies. Tactile paving on the floor also helps guide the visually impaired to locate individual zones. There will also be Braille guidance on handrails for the visually impaired to locate waiting areas and wheelchair ramps which link the interchange to the MRT station.

When the new station opens in 2019, Sembawang residents will have a direct connection to the MRT network and will no longer have to take a bus to transfer to Sembawang or Yishun MRT stations. Commuters travelling towards the city centre or Jurong East will save up to 10 minutes of travelling time.

For greater accessibility and convenience, Canberra MRT station is designed with five entrances, with one connected to the new housing estates across Canberra Link. An elevated link bridge to be built across Canberra Link will enable commuters to directly access the city-bound train platform. The new station will also have covered linkways to bus stops, pick-up and drop-off points as well as bicycle parks.

“A good meal is not made by the food you eat, but by the company you share the meal with.” Certainly there were good meals being shared all across Sembawang GRC by residents of Admiralty, Canberra, Gambas, Sembawang and Woodlands during the Lunar New Year dinners held in each division. The dinners were a time of warm fellowship for our residents and Grassroots Advisors to usher in the Year of the Monkey together.

At the dinners, the God of Wealth was spotted giving small gifts, symbolising fortune in the coming year. Traditional lion dance performances ushered in prosperity and good luck amid the rhythm of the drums, gongs and cymbals. In alignment with Chinese customs, Lo Hei or tossing Yusheng was the signature event in all the dinners, where everyone shared his hearty wishes for a good upcoming year for all.

Indeed, as we enter a new year, may the kampung spirit of Sembawang GRC continue to flourish and grow!

Over 1,000 Canberra residents gathered at the mini park in front of Blk 320 Sembawang Close for a mass Lo Hei session, vibrant street party and healthy lifestyle carnival. With so many fun and exciting activities lined up, it was no wonder that everyone was in high spirits that night.

The mass Lo Hei session which saw 205 tables being set up to accommodate all residents was a hit with everyone present. Together, our MPs and residents tossed the traditional Yusheng with heartiest good wishes for the year ahead. While the Lo Hei was ongoing, the 11 floats from Chingay Parade 2016 waited in the street, adding a festive mood to the scene.

Crowds lined up to wave and cheer as the procession passed through Canberra. There was plenty to do that night, with fun game stalls for families to try their hand at as well as active and vibrant sports demonstrations to keep the energy levels up!

LIGHTS Of LEGACY,BRIGHTER SINGAPORE—

CHINGAY @ NORTH 2016

At Republic Polytechnic, residents were greeted by Fu Lu Shou mascots and the God of Wealth stilt walkers distributing chocolate ‘Yuan Baos’ (ancient Chinese golden ingots). Cultural dance performances by various ethnic groups added colour and vibrancy to the celebratory ambience at the starting point.

Minister Khaw Boon Wan, Mr Amrin Amin, Dr Lim Wee Kiak, Mr Vikram Nair and Mr Ong Teng Koon each penned down New Year wishes on a sky lantern. These sky lanterns were hand-drawn by our residents, and carried some of the core values advocated by our founding Prime Minister, the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew – social cohesion, resilience as a nation, caring community, racial harmony and religious harmony, to name a few. These sky lanterns were released amid a swirl of colourful confetti, officially launching Chingay @ North 2016.

@WOODLANDS

After a five-year hiatus, Chingay returned to the North on 27 February 2016. The theme for this year’s Chingay was “Lights of Legacy, Brighter

Singapore”, signifying a future-focused, youth-centric Singapore.

The 18 km float procession started from Republic Polytechnic and passed through Woodlands, Sembawang and Yishun towns. Excited residents lined the streets and were treated to a beautiful procession of 11 floats. Among the 11 floats were the Voyage SG100 Float, Chinese New Year Float, Malay Cultural Float, Indian Cultural Float, Towards SG100 Float and Light of Legacy Float.

MPs for Sembawang GRC, Minister Khaw Boon Wan, Mr Amrin Amin, Dr Lim Wee Kiak and Mr Vikram Nair as well as MP for Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC, Mr Ong Teng Koon, joined residents at various points happening along the Chingay @ North 2016 route.

LEARNING BEYONDTHE CLASSROOM

For many secondary schools, instilling important values like multiculturalism in students means field trips to museums or visiting cultural landmarks. Christ Church

Secondary School (CHR), however, decided to do something different.

For the past five years, CHR has been involved in the Chingay Parade, with an estimated number of 280 Secondary One students participating each year. The aim is to encourage CHR students to be more aware of Singapore’s multicultural diversity.

The idea stemmed from CHR’s former principal, Mrs Yeo Chin Nam. “The Chingay Parade is a community gift for our nation, and CHR is very proud to be part of it,” Mrs Yeo said. She hopes that through this initiative, the students will be given opportunities to learn outside of the classroom and witness how people from different races and religions come together to celebrate as one.

“Students are able to link and relate their learning in the classroom to the real world in an applicable and realistic way,” said Mdm Lee Chai Yen, Head of Department for Mother Tongue language. “The experience [of participating in Chingay] has really been eye-opening for the students.”

Participating in the Chingay parade has since become an anticipated event for all CHR Secondary One students.

This year, a total of 260 Secondary One students from CHR were part of the grand opening contingent of Chingay 2016, themed ‘Lights of Legacy; Voyage SF100 Begins’. The theme behind the performance is to celebrate and reflect the legacy of our Founding Fathers as Singapore moves forward.

Lois Sawntharajan, who took part in Chingay 2016 had nothing but praises for the event. “It’s good to focus on activities beyond school work,” the 13-year-old Christ Church student said, beaming. “I’ve really learnt and experienced a lot by taking part.”

By Woon Jiemin, Republic Polytechnic student

“I have fostered new friendships with my

classmates as we encouraged each other to persevere

through rehearsals.”

Chingay @ North 2016 came to an end at the open field between Blk 389 Yishun Ave 6 and Yishun Street 31. A huge crowd gathered, enjoying the plentiful food stalls, game booths and performances by local artistes. The LED dragon dance performance was definitely one of the highlights of the event for Gambas residents, who were mesmerised by the bright lights and awe-inspiring moves of the performers.

Chingay @ North 2016 concluded on a nostalgic note in Gambas town as everyone joined in to sing a rousing rendition of the classic National Day Parade theme song ‘Home’. Indeed, we can look forward to a ‘Brighter Singapore’ – right here at home in the heart of Sembawang GRC.

REMEMBERINGMR LEE KUAN YEW

“For the young, let me tell you the sky has turned brighter. There’s a glorious rainbow that beckons those with the spirit of adventure. And there are

rich findings at the end of the rainbow. To the young and to the not-so-old, I say, look at

that horizon, follow that rainbow, go ride it.” – Lee Kuan Yew (1923-2015)

Values That Shaped Singapore

On 20 March 2016, residents from across Sembawang GRC participated in Values That Shaped Singapore. Starting from Sembawang CC, MPs from Sembawang GRC and 60 families carried handheld flags depicting integral values to Singapore, as we took an enjoyable brisk walk to Sembawang Park. A family carnival awaited residents at the end of their walk, with free ice cream and balloons being given out to all participants. Along with game booths featuring traditional games like pick-up sticks and hopscotch, there was also an exhibition on Mr Lee Kuan Yew, along with the history and new developments of Sembawang. To launch the carnival, residents and MPs from Sembawang GRC pieced together a large scale jigsaw puzzle detailing these values. It was certainly a meaningful exercise in memory of Mr Lee Kuan Yew.

Remembering Mr Lee Kuan Yew Memorial Service

The Remembering Mr Lee Kuan Yew memorial service was held at Causeway Point on 23 March 2016. Dr Teo Ho Pin, Mayor of North West District, along with MPs from Sembawang and Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC came together to present flowers in remembrance of Mr Lee Kuan Yew in a sombre and moving moment. The evening was filled with touching musical tributes by local groups and artistes like the Sembawang Wind Orchestra, Republic Rhapsody, and Ms Farisha Ishak, the Final One Champion, among others. It was a night of remembrance and reflection for all.

May we always remember to 'follow that rainbow'.

One year on, we remember. We continue to be inspired by these words from our late founding father of Singapore, Mr Lee Kuan Yew.

Not only had he left behind an irreplaceable legacy that is Singapore’s prosperity and success, he had also imparted to us the uniquely Singaporean spirit – the spirit of adventure, boldness and determination.

Along with the rest of the nation, two remembrance events were held in Sembawang GRC to commemorate a truly great man in the month of March.

Here's to the values that have shaped Singapore!

Boundless fun and festivities awaited those who attended the Canberra Day 2016, which was held on 13 March 2016 at the mini-park near Blk 320 Sembawang Close. MPs for Sembawang

GRC, Minister Khaw Boon Wan, Minister Ong Ye Kung, Mr Amrin Amin, Dr Lim Wee Kiak and Mr Vikram Nair launched the event to the cheers of the crowd.

For the children, an exciting game of laser tag beckoned. Youngsters were spotted concealing themselves deftly behind obstacles, while dodging and aiming their laser guns at the ‘enemy’! Much to the delight of the children and residents, our MPs also took part in the 3G Laser Tag game, showing off their skills and teamwork in an exciting game. Everyone exited the ‘battlefield’ in high spirits, having built closer ties of friendship through the activity.

fUN fOR EVERYONE!CANBERRA DAY 2016

The elderly were also well taken care of at Canberra Day. As age catches up, common eye disorders such as cataracts start to surface. The situation can be easily averted by regular checks. The seniors got to know more about protecting their eyes in the Eye Health Talk, followed by a complimentary health and eye screening. A clean bill of health was surely the greatest takeaway for our senior residents.

Families were also encouraged to dress up as superheroes of their choice to take part in the Best Dressed Family Contest. It was surely a ‘super’ day with the likes of Batman, Captain America and Superman walking around the carnival. What’s more, there was also a wide range of fringe activities, exciting performances and lucky draws for the residents who attended. It was truly a memorable day for all!

KEEPINGSEMBAWANG

CLEAN

On 8 May, ‘Operation WE Clean Up!’ – a nationwide cleaning initiative was launched. Partnering with the Public Hygiene Council, litter picking exercises

were conducted across Sembawang GRC. Armed with tongs, grabbers and garbage bags, residents experienced first-hand the impact of inconsiderate littering behaviour and the difficulties faced by cleaners.

At Woodlands, MP Mr Amrin Amin joined enthusiastic residents at Admiral Garden, near Woodlands Ring Road. Siblings helped one another to pick up litter, demonstrating teamwork within the family. Mr Amrin Amin later went to Fushan Garden along Woodlands Street 81. Together with residents, he scouted every nook and cranny for rubbish. In line with a social media campaign on our GRC Facebook page, Kampung Sembawang, gift vouchers were presented to all cleaners as a token of appreciation.

Everyone pitching in for a cleaner Woodlands!

Working together to clean up our neighbourhood.

Over at Admiralty, MP Mr Vikram Nair and his team of residents covered Blks 688A to 690F. Combing through the area, they separated the litter into rubbish and recyclables, as practised in other constituencies. The kampung spirit is clearly vibrant here. Residents made a concerted effort in making this place they call home a clean and conducive place to live in. They also took a leaf from the books of other countries, learning from a video clip during the buffet lunch, on how other countries keep their environment clean.

MP Dr Lim Wee Kiak kick started ‘Operation WE Clean Up!’ by covering Blks 356 to 360. Eagerly putting on gloves, residents and Dr Lim got to work quickly, picking up litter along the way. This was concluded with a mini buffet, and presenting of awards to cleaners. On the same day – which happened also to be Mother’s Day – Dr Lim also celebrated with all mothers in Canberra.

On 22 May at Nee Soon East Park, Minister Ong Ye Kung and Gambas residents worked hand in hand for a cleaner and greener environment. Using tongs and garbage bags, everyone made short work of the litter-picking with gusto. Minister Ong also thanked the cleaners for keeping the environment clean on a daily basis. The exercise ended on a high note with Minister Ong presenting tokens of appreciation to cleaners.

Picking litter together in Gambas!

Cheers to another successful Operation

WE Clean Up @ Sembawang!

Minister Khaw Boon Wan, MP for Sembawang division, presenting a cleaner with a gift voucher of thanks.

Minister Khaw Boon Wan started the event by honoring cleaners in Sembawang division. Each cleaner walked away with a gift voucher with an appreciative comment from our residents. Litter picking commenced after. Equipped with tongs and garbage bags, residents hunted for litter at the common area of Blks 769 and 770 Woodlands Drive 60. Drains, pavements and grass patches were searched thoroughly during the litter picking. Everyone did their part for a cleaner Sembawang.

Students from Sembawang Secondary School explaining a proposal on how to create a better living environment to MP for Canberra division, Dr Lim Wee Kiak.

Dr Lim Wee Kiak speaking with residents at a house visit.

Working together to make our home a better place!

Feeding pigeons is an offence that carries a fine up to $500

Everyone can do their part to create a better living environment for all.

Take a look below on why we should not feed the pigeons:

It’s our home and everyone has a part to play! Sayang Sembawang, Sayang our Home.

That was the prevailing spirit at the Canberra Constituency Comprehensive Environmental Event held on Sunday, 17 April 2016 at the Link House, Blk 403A Admiralty Link, in conjunction with NEA and AVA.

Students from Sembawang Secondary School also took part in the event, going from house-to-house to publicise various important environmental issues such as dengue prevention, not feeding the pigeons, high-rise littering, and how to create a better living environment for our community. Dr Lim Wee Kiak, PBM, MP for Canberra division also joined in the house-to-house visits, inviting residents to provide their valuable comments and suggestions on environmental issues.

Simultaneously at the link house, the Canberra 91st Recycling Exchange Drive was taking place in full swing. These recycling exchange events have been organised by the Canberra CCC Environment Committee since January 2008 and have provided a useful platform for residents to recycle their unwanted goods for the good of the environment.
