OPTIONAL Design & Visual Communication (10DST) Year 10

Course description This course provides a range of varied activities in designing and graphic communication. An emphasis is placed on problem solving, innovation, technical competency and presentation. This course leads to NCEA Level 1.

Economics (10ECO) Year 10

HoD: Mr McKay Course Cost: $10.00 trip

Pre-requisite Open Entry

Course description Young would-be economists emerge from Year 10 knowing how to participate in the New Zealand economy as consumers and producers. You learn not only what you need to survive in a changing world, but also for citizenship. The Language of Economics includes: Earning an Income, Kiwisaver, Business Enterprise, Insurance, Consumer Law, The Law of Demand, Resource Management and where to go for financial help. The opportunity is available to gain NCEA credits at Level One through an Internal Assessment on Marketing.

French (10FRE) Year 10

HoD: Mrs Corcoran TiC: Mr Daveis Course Cost: $10.00 Workbook, $10.00 for Meals $15.00 Online Licence

Pre-requisite Achieved in majority of Year 9 French assessments or a proven commitment to class work and study.

Course description French at Year 10 approximates Levels 3 & 4 of the NZ Curriculum for French and deals with the following topics: Daily Life; Leisure Time Activities; Arrangements and Appointments; Getting Around a Town; Shopping for Food and Eating Out and Visit to Paris. The topics covered in Year 9 are revised and students will cover the following topics in Year 10: School subjects; Belongings; Familiar things and people; Sport and Leisure and Time; Weather and Seasons.

Japanese (10JAP) Year 10

HoD: Mrs Corcoran Course Cost: $10.00 Materials, $15.00 Online Licence $30.00 End of year trip approx. Pre-requisite Achieved in majority of Year 9 Japanese assessments or a proven commitment to class work and study. Course description Japanese at Year 10 level develops the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. More emphasis is placed on oral communications this year with students creating their own dialogues and plays. The Year 10 course involves learning another set of Japanese characters called Katakana and adding to the kanji characters already learnt in Year 9. There are also research projects on aspects of Japanese life, customs and culture. Students will have the chance to be involved in EOTC opportunities. Music (10MUS) Year 10

HoD: Mrs McIntyre Course Cost: $60.00 Instrumental or vocal tuition $10 approx. attending concerts / workshops $25.00 sheet music and theory book Grade 1

Pre-requisite Students of Music at Year 10 must have had 1 year of instrumental tuition, either though the St Bernard’s Itinerant programme or privately and be undertaking a second year of study. Students of Music NCEA Level 1 are expected to have had instrumental lessons for 2 years prior to commencement of the course.

Course description The main aims of Music at this level are to continue to foster a passion for music and prepare students for NCEA Level 1 Music

Samoan (10SAM) Year 10

Pre-requisite Achieved in majority of Year 9 Samoan assessments or a proven fluency in Samoan.

Course description Samoan at Year 10 approximates Levels 3 & 4 of the NZ Curriculum for Samoan. Samoan at the Year 10 level develops the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. In Year 10 more emphasis is placed on reading and writing skills. Students will also participate in Samoan Performing Arts. There are research projects on aspects of Samoan life, customs and culture. Students will have the chance to be involved in EOTC opportunities.

Te Reo Maori (10MAO) Year 10

HoD: Mr Williams Course Cost: $35.00 approx. Pre-requisite Achieved level in majority of assessments in Year 9 Te Reo Maori, or if a student is from Kura Kaupapa Maori (these latter students may be required to do NCEA Te Reo). Course description The Te Reo Māori Language Programme will focus on: practical activities associated with tikanga Māori practices and traditions through – karakia, whaikōrero, whakataukī and kapa haka; the values of honesty and integrity and family relationships – whānau whānui; acquiring skills for Pānui (reading), Tuhituhi (writing), Whakarongo (listening), Kōrero (speaking), Whakaatu (presentation) and Mātakitaki (viewing).; understanding the protocols belonging to the pōwhiri, the poroporoaki, the wharenui and the marae. Technology Construction (10TCC) Year 10

HoD: Mr Cassidy Course Cost: $30.00 students have to provide specialists items for own projects

Course description This course leads to Construction Technology and is a practice run for the Industry courses run in Year 11, 12 & 13. This course provides basic knowledge and skills for those intending to enter a Trade.

Technology Cookery (10TCK) Year 10

HoD: Mr Cassidy TiC: Mrs Kanwal Course Cost: $50.00 Pre-requisite Open entry Course description This course is designed as a simple foundation for students wanting to gain entrance into the Hospitality and Catering Industry. Students learn about Safe Food Handling; Hygiene; Food groups and an understanding about food eating and its influences. They learn about food culture in other countries and its impact on us. They also become familiar with celebrations and festivities. Leads to Level 1 Cookery Possible Career pathways Food Scientist/Technologist, Dietician, Chef

Visual Art (10Art) Year 10

HoD: Mrs McIntyre TiC: Mr Lafoa’i Course Cost: $40.00 per annum covers basic materials required Pre-requisite Achieved or a good overall average in Year 9 Art Course description At Year 10 students with a particular interest in Art are able to specialise. The course serves to develop basic technique and enhance an understanding of working methods used. It acts as a solid grounding for NCEA Level 1 and is highly recommended before Year 11 is commenced. Leads to Level 1 Visual Art Possible Career pathways Artist, Craftsperson, Textile/Interior/Graphic Designer

NATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

To be awarded NCEA Level 1, students must achieve 80

credits at level 1 or above. Included in this total, at least 10

credits are needed in literacy from specified standards and 10

credits in numeracy from specified standards.

To be awarded NCEA Level 2, student must achieve 80

credits, 60 of which must be at level 2 or above. The other 20

credits can be from any level on the NZQF. As from 2013

onwards, the NCEA Level 1 literacy and numeracy requirement

must be met to gain NCEA Level 2.

To be awarded NCEA Level 3, student must achieve 80

credits, 60 of which must be at level 3 or above. The other 20

credits can be at level 2 or above on the NZQF. As from 2014

onwards, the NCEA Level 1 literacy and numeracy requirement

must be met to gain NCEA Level 3.

Certificate and Course Endorsement – to qualify for a

certificate endorsement with Excellence for NCEA, students

require 50 credits at Excellence level. An endorsement with

Merit requires 50 credits at Merit (or Merit and Excellence).

Course endorsement at Merit and Excellence level is also

possible. To qualify for either of these, a student must gain 14

credits or more at the level of the endorsement. This must

include a minimum of 3 internally assessed credits and 3

externally assessed credits. However, Physical Education and

Level 3 Visual Arts course endorsements can be gained without

external standards.
