Ive got a class in five minutes. A scene from the future? Or the present. The student pub is just one facet of the college drinking scene of today. Presently, a number of colleges and universities in the state of Texas are seeking the addition of a bar to the campus. One exception is the University of Texas at Austin which since Jan- uary of this year has had one. The pub, called The Texas Tav- ern, is located in the temporary union, until the Texas Union is renovated. The bar currently serves all forms of alcoholic bever- ages to any student who is a legal adult. Shirley Perry, director of the Texas Union, controlling body of the tavern, discussed the present situation at UT. There have been requests for an on-campus bar since the thir- ties and then again in the sixties. Then with the 18-year-old adult law the students got the support of the administration and, finally, the Board of Regents. The last obstacle was a city ordinance that was changed for us,said Perry. The state license for the pub is held and controlled by the re- gents, the director added. At present, the bar serves beer from 11 a.m. until midnight and mixed drinks from 5 until mid- night, weekdays. On Saturday, al- coholic beverages are served from 6 p.m. until 1 a.m. Sunday the hours are from 6 p.m. until mid- night. We hope to get the hours expanded with the Austin city councils permission,said Perry. Perry said the prices, which range from 35|i for some beers to $1.35 for some types of mixed drinks, are some of the lowest in town. In addition, the tavern has a program of nightly discounts for students from different academic colleges. Does a student pub increase problem drinking among stu- dents? Weve been concerned about increases in excessive drinking, but at this time the university hasnt seen any change,said Per- ry- Staff members working at the tavern are trained in identifying behaviorial problems, alcoholism and excessive drinking, said the union head. Off-duty university police work as identification checkers in the bar. Another deterrant to excessive drinking is a state law making it illegal to take drinks out of a bar. Thus, the student cant use the pub as a package store and take the booze home. Another problem on campus is that of the student who drinks secretly. 1 if m Fellowship deadline April 16 is the deadline to apply for the recently-approved University Undergraduate Fellows Program. The new program enables a senior who has an overall grade point ratio of at least 3.5 to substitute research for up to six credit hours of course work. Kite flight Saturday On Saturday a kite flying contest sponsored by TAMU Women's Aw- areness Workshop will be held at 1 p.m. in the field behind Keathley and Fowler dorms. The 1st prize is a pony keg of beer, 2nd prize is two cases of beer and 3rd prize is one case of beer. r All kites must be homemade and all contestants must be TAMU students. To win, the kite must fly. There is a 50c entry fee. Cavalry horse show A hunter-jumper horse show will be conducted April 6 by Parsons Mounted Cavalry. A scene from the future? Or the present.

The student pub is just one facet of the college drinking scene of today. Presently, a number of colleges and universities in the state of Texas are seeking the addition of a bar to the campus. One exception is the University of Texas at Austin which since Jan­uary of this year has had one.

The pub, called The Texas Tav­ern, is located in the temporary union, until the Texas Union is renovated. The bar currently serves all forms of alcoholic bever­ages to any student who is a legal adult.

Shirley Perry, director of the Texas Union, controlling body of the tavern, discussed the present situation at UT.

“There have been requests for an on-campus bar since the thir­ties and then again in the sixties. Then with the 18-year-old adult law the students got the support of the administration and, finally, the Board of Regents. The last obstacle was a city ordinance that was changed for us,” said Perry.

The state license for the pub is held and controlled by the re­gents, the director added.

At present, the bar serves beer from 11 a.m. until midnight and mixed drinks from 5 until mid­

night, weekdays. On Saturday, al­coholic beverages are served from 6 p.m. until 1 a.m. Sunday the hours are from 6 p.m. until mid­night.

“We hope to get the hours expanded with the Austin city council’s permission,” said Perry.

Perry said the prices, which range from 35|i for some beers to $1.35 for some types of mixed drinks, are some of the lowest in town. In addition, the tavern has a program of nightly discounts for students from different academic colleges.

Does a student pub increase problem drinking among stu­dents?

“We’ve been concerned about increases in excessive drinking, but at this time the university hasn’t seen any change,” said Per­ry-

Staff members working at the tavern are trained in identifying behaviorial problems, alcoholism and excessive drinking, said the union head. Off-duty university police work as identification checkers in the bar.

Another deterrant to excessive drinking is a state law making it illegal to take drinks out of a bar. Thus, the student can’t use the pub as a package store and take the booze home.

Another problem on campus is that of the student who drinks secretly.

Fellowship deadlineApril 16 is the deadline to apply for the recently-approved University

Undergraduate Fellows Program. The new program enables a senior who has an overall grade point ratio of at least 3.5 to substitute research for up to six credit hours of course work. All inquiries should be directed to Dr. Friedman at 845-3251.

Kite flight SaturdayOn Saturday a kite flying contest sponsored by TAMU Women's Aw­

areness Workshop will be held at 1 p.m. in the field behind Keathley and Fowler dorms. The 1st prize is a pony keg of beer, 2nd prize is two cases of beer and 3rd prize is one case of beer. r

All kites must be homemade and all contestants must be TAMU students. To win, the kite must fly. There is a 50c entry fee.

Cavalry horse showA hunter-jumper horse show will be conducted April 6 by Parsons
