BAYTOWN — (Decem-ber 4, 2020) — Following acancer diagnosis, patientsand their families may beoverwhelmed by a varietyof complex treatment de-tails and crucial tasks.

In addition to dealingwith a flood of emotions, ranging from fear to anxi-ety to grief, cancer patientsare often sent to see sever-al different physicians andare given countless detailson the next steps in theirtreatment.

With cancer oncologynurse navigators on staff, the Houston MethodistCancer Center at Baytownworks to alleviate thestress on patients andtheir families. NavigatorAlyssa Sheffield says sheworks as an advocate tohelp patients on theirtreatment journey.

“I empower patients tomake decisions and be in-formed regarding theircare,” Sheffield said. “Ihelp provide them withany resources they mayneed and prevent any bar-riers that may hinder themfrom obtaining the treat-ment and care they need.”

Nurse navigators fre-quently join patients whenthey meet with their phy-sicians to help explain ev-erything the doctor hastold them, in addition toconnecting them with re-sources that can provideemotional support. Shef-field says the most com-mon concern that patients

and their families face ismanaging financial issues.Even with insurance, can-cer treatments are expen-sive, so she works toprovide resources to assistwith everyday expensessuch as paying bills, buy-ing groceries and coveringchildcare expenses.

“We have a programcalled Pink Heals, whichprovides assistance to helppay their monthly bills andfree up money so they canafford treatments,” Shef-field says. “We evaluatewhat they might need on acase by case basis, includ-ing being able to affordtheir prescriptions.”

Transportation is an-other area of concern forpatients. For example, pa-

tients undergoing radia-tion therapy must travel tothe hospital daily for treat-ment, so Sheffield connectsthem with local resourcesto ensure that they areable to get to and from ap-pointments.

Cancer navigators bringa wealth of experience andknowledge on the challeng-es that oncology patientsface. Navigators typicallymust have a minimum offive years of oncology clin-ical experience. Becausenot every cancer is treatedthe same way, knowing theprocesses involved in a pa-tient’s specific cancer is vi-tal.

In addition to medicaland radiation oncologists, surgeons, nurses and so-

cial workers, cancer oncol-ogy navigators are an in-t e g r a l p a r t o f t h emulti-disciplinary team atthe Houston MethodistCancer Center at Bay-town. But while their workis invaluable, cancer-spe-cific nurse navigators arenot on staff at every can-cer center in the Houstonarea.

“Baytown area resi-dents benefit from havinga full, multi-disciplinaryteam at their service. Ourwork is special becausehaving a navigator helps totake the load off the pa-tient by guiding them onthe next steps in theirtreatment plan and beinga resource for patients whoare often confused by ev-erything that’s required,”Sheffield said.

Nancy Thompson, direc-tor of the Houston Method-i s t Cancer Center atBaytown, says nurse navi-gators have a positive im-pact on outcomes forpatients.

“Navigation can helpdecrease the time from di-agnosis to starting treat-m e n t t h r o u g h t h ecommunication and coordi-nation with health careproviders and facilities,”Thompson said. “Aftertreatment is completed, the oncology nurse naviga-tor provides education andsupport for survivorshipcare; addressing specificfollow up care required foryour particular diagnosis,

as well as education andresources available in thecommunity.”

Chicken litter led to anew business venture andstate recognition for ayoung Texas couple.TheTexas Farm Bureauhonored Matt and JessicaHanslik of Lavaca Countyas the 2020 outstandingyoung farmer andrancher. The recognitioncame during the organi-zation’s 87th annualmeeting, which was heldvirtually this year.TheHansliks grow corn andhay, raise cattle and arepart owners of an all-natural fertilizer compa-ny, in which they takechicken litter and“upcycle” it for use asfarm fertilizer, the farmbureau said in its newsrelease about theaward.“The idea wassparked when Jessica, amanager at a nationalshell egg company, suggested they beginusing chicken litter fromlocal broiler houses tofertilize their fields,” theFarm Bureau stated.“Now, in addition to usingthe all-natural fertilizerto boost yields on theirown land, they sell theproduct to other areafarms and ranches.”

It is a year of lowerexpectations.

Every year, there is achorus of folks urging us tolower our expectations forthe holidays—buy less, consume less, worry lessabout having a picture-perfect holiday, and spendmore time reflecting on whatthe holiday means to us.This year, it seems, we willfinally get a chance to dothat.

I was recently asked whatmy childhood memories ofthe holidays were, and I hada couple of vivid ones.

I saw myself sitting onthe wooden stairway of thefarmhouse where my mothergrew up. There were far toomany people to sit at a table, too many to get any kind ofchair, even after all thefolding chairs were calledinto service and the couchfilled to capacity.

The seating was distrib-uted on a strict senioritybasis and, as I was veryyoung, all the cousins myage would line up and sit onthe stairs leading to thesecond floor of the farm-house, one above the other, with our plates on our laps.

This was a fine arrange-ment, except that thefarmhouse had only onebathroom and this stairwayled to it. The stairway wasnarrow and some of myrelatives were not. And so,we would lean over as far aswe could (still with ourplates on our laps) to allowthe elderly relatives to maketheir way up to the bath-room at the top of the stairs.

That is a good memory. The year I turned five, I

had chicken pox at Christ-mas. I spoke to my motherrecently about that year.“Oh! That was a miserableChristmas,” she said. AndI’m sure, for her, it was. Butmy memory is not of thefestivities I missed.

My mother stayed athome with me on ChristmasEve and all I remember wasthe small Christmas tree myparents put in my bedroom. My memory is not of beingterribly sick, but of seeingthose shining Christmaslights every time I openedmy eyes and feeling lovedand special enough to havemy very own tree.

That is another goodmemory.

I’ve been telling myhusband, Peter, that we aremaking good memories now.Of course, Peter and I arenot working in a hospital ortrying to teach school ordealing with grumpy retailcustomers. We are at homeall the time except for ouronce every other week trip tothe grocery store which isbeginning to feel more likean exotic adventure everytime we do it.

We are seeing no one sowe can continue to visit Lori, who continues to fightcancer, and Peter cookssomething for her everyweek and I read a bit morefrom my book (although bythis time I have finished thefirst book and am reading anew one) and I know we willremember this time.

We won’t have memoriesof a foreign landscape or abreathtaking performance ora fancy gathering. Instead,we’ll remember the excite-ment of hearing the doorbellring and getting to chat witha neighbor on our frontstoop. Our memories fromthis year will be of the samehomecooked meal, the sameroutine, the same clothesworn, the same neighborsgreeted from across thelawn, the same dogs on mywalk—as the days turnedinto weeks and the weeksturned into months. We willremember.

I might miss the excite-ment of a different kind oflife. But I know I willremember the small, goodthings in this year of lowerexpectations.

Till next time, Carrie

COUNTYCONNECTION

Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo

We all knew this was coming. The holidays arehere, and we are simply not where we need to be toprotect our community from COVID-19. Since latesummer, there has been a deeply troubling loss inthe momentum we’d begun to build as a community.Reopenings took place prematurely and, bit by bit,we’ve seen every indicator we use move in the wrongdirection, again. No single day-to-day change hasbeen dramatic, but, if you look at the trends, theyare alarming and deadly:

Since mid-September, the 14-day average ofdaily new cases we report in Harris County hasincreased more than 4 times over to 1016 new casesreported per day.

Over the past month, that same number ofaverage daily new cases has more than doubled.

We have seen our county positivity rate in-crease from its low in early October of 5.4%. We’renow at 9.4%.

We’re adding as many patients to our ICUsevery day as we were in early June. We are trackingtrends in our hospitalized COVID population justlike the ones we were seeing before the crisis inJune and July.

This is our wake-up call. These numbers don’teven take into account all of those that were inevita-bly infected at Thanksgiving gatherings, and don’tknow it yet — we’ll see those numbers in the nextfew weeks. We’re eight months into this crisis, and Iknow we’ve all grown tired. But we can’t give in. Weare in the middle of fighting a war against COVID-19, and if we care about our friends, family mem-bers, and neighbors, we must do more.

First, cancel gatherings, large and small, withanyone outside your household. Right now we allhave a desire to be together, I know. But now is notthe time. By doing so, you put them, and yourself, atrisk.

Second, get tested, whether or not you havesymptoms or believe you’ve been exposed. The onlyway we can contain the virus now is for those whoare carrying the virus to quarantine, and no oneknows whether they are carrying the virus or notuntil they get tested. Visit ReadyHarris.org for allthe free options, or check with your medical provid-er.

I understand all of this is a lot to ask of thecommunity. But all of these measures will savelives, even if you don’t immediately see it in front ofyou. Just like the virus, these sacrifices are invisi-ble, but nonetheless substantial. And, as we makethese sacrifices consistently and dutifully, weshould be asking our state and federal governmentto meet us halfway. We need more measures tomitigate the impacts of the virus, and we need moreeconomic relief for families and for the businessesthat are suffering in the wake of this crisis.

Please try and enjoy the holidays despite thisheavy weight we are all carrying. Take solace inknowing that as humans we’ve lived through muchworse, and we will again. We are strong and we willget through this. Better days are coming.

We all knew this wascoming

When it comes to our unique holiday of Thanksgiving, Ithink we all can see past the turkey and trimmings to whatit’s all about.

Oh, there are some historians who will tell us thePilgrims really didn’t share a meal with the Indians, andthat’s okay, because they got grant money to tell us that. And there are other historians who tell us that the Pilgimsand the Indians were pals and split the turkey and dressing. And that’s okay, too. Historians have to eat just like the restof us. But to me, that’s immaterial. No matter who came upwith the idea, it’s a good idea. At least once a year we need topause and give thanks in our own way for our blessings.

Of course, those of us who don’t live in the big cities tendto be thankful for different things than those who may live instuccoed cliff dwellings. We tend to look at the naturalblessings more than the manmade ones. We tend to begrateful for the simpler things, like calves in the spring, andhow clean they look before they discover mud. Folks inHome Country are deeply grateful that tasty rabbits arrivein large litters, and bears don’t. When we think about it, weare thankful that we get eggs from hens and not fromrattlesnakes, as checking the rattler house each morningcould get ‘way too exciting. When you consider that porcu-pines have quills, and deer don’t, it gives us pause for praise, and we’re happy that it’s skunks who carry scent glands andnot dairy cattle.

We are thankful, too, that hurricanes and tornadoes onlyhappen in warm weather. It’s bad enough to lose the barnwithout being chill-factored to death while it’s happening.Down at the Mule Barn truck stop, Dud said he was thankfulturkeys were stupid. When asked why, he said, “Ever lookin a turkey’s eyes? Not only is no one home, but someoneshut off the lights somewhere back in the Middle Ages. Aturkey has just enough brains to operate his heart andlungs.” And you’re thankful for that? We asked. And Dudsaid “Sure. If turkeys had been given the rudimentaryintelligence of an empty clarinet case, we might be forced toeat sheep on Thanksgiving.”

The wild and whacky 2020college football season iswinding down with just acouple of weeks remaining, let’sjust hope we get to see itcompleted what with all thepostponements and cancelationof games due to the COVID-19pandemic.

Most of the major conferenc-es will play their league titlegames the weekend of Dec. 18-19, but teams that won’t beplaying in those games willhave the chance to play thatsame weekend to makeupgames that had to be postponedearlier in the season.

Jimbo Fisher’s Texas A&MAggies travel to Knoxville onSaturday to take on Tennesseein a game that was supposed tobe played in October. Twoweeks ago, the Aggies used astifling defense to defeat LSU,20-7, to move to 6-1 on theseason.

A&M probably won’t beplaying in the SEC title gamebecause their lone loss came atthe hands of No. 1-rankedAlabama, which lookeddominant in its 42-13 win athome over arch rival Auburn.Nick Saban, who had to watchthe game from because hetested positive for the coronavirus, may very well have thebest team in the country.Should the Aggies win out, they would need either No. 2Notre Dame, No. 3 Clemson orNo. 4 Ohio State to lose at leastonce in the final two weeks togive the Ags a legitimate shotat one of the four CollegeFootball Playoff (CFP) berths. Idon’t see that happening, butFisher’s team should be in linefor a Jan. 1 bowl game (if theyare played) that should carry aload of momentum into theoffseason.

In the NFL, the season isalso winding down, and thereare a number of teams in boththe AFC and NFC still in theplayoff hunt.

I don’t think the Texans areone of those teams, but theyhave played better since firinghead coach Bill O’Brien. Twoweeks ago, the Texansembarrassed the Detroit Lionson Thanksgiving Day, 41-25, asquarterback Deshaun Watson

threw four touchdown passes. The loss was so bad thatDetroit ownership fired headcoach Matt Patricia andGeneral Manager Dan Quinn.

This week, the Texans takeon another NFC North foewhen they travel to Chicago totake on the Bears. This is agame the Texans can win.

Other interesting matchupshave the Patriots visiting theRams on Thursday NightFootball, the Saints visitingPhiladelphia with hopes ofquarterback Drew Breesreturning under center, KansasCity facing a solid Dolphinsteam in Miami, Pittsburghvisiting Buffalo and on MondayNight Football a good one inthe AFC North as Baltimorepays a visit to a vastly-improved Cleveland Brownsteam.

Before we take a look atthose games, let’s review lastweek’s record. A 6-4 weekbrought the season record to81-40 (67%).

Now, onto these weekendsgames.

NCAAMichigan at Ohio State:

For years this game has beenThe Game of the Year in theBig 10, with the winnerearning the league’s EasternDivision crown, but not thisyear. Sure, Ohio State haslived up to its end of thebargain and should goundefeated in the regularseason, but Michigan has beena huge disappointment thisyear. Two weeks ago, JimHarbaugh’s team fell to 2-4 onthe season when it lost at hometo what was a winless PennState team. There is specula-tion that this will be it forHarbaugh, who might be abetter fit in the NFL. Look forthe Buckeyes to roll behind

quarterback Justin Fields(1,208 yards, 13 TDs), runningback Master Teague III (380yards, 6 TDs) and wide receiverChris Olave (26 receptions, 389yards, 4 TDs). If this one getsugly, there’s a good chanceHarbaugh might not make itthrough the post-game newsconference! My pick, Ohio State36, Michigan 13

Oklahoma at WestVirginia: After a slow start,Lincoln Riley’s Sooners havebounced back and have a legitshot at playing in the Big 12title game against Iowa State. But first they’ve got to takecare of business in their finalregular season road game atWest Virginia. The Mountain-eers have been up and downthis season, but have a soliddefense and a decent quarter-back in Jarrett Doege (2,219yards, 13 TDs). The Soonershave been rolling since theirOct. 3 loss at home to IowaState, winners of five straightheading into last Saturday’shome finale against Baylor.Quarterback Spencer Ratliff(2,319 yards, 22 TDs), runningback Rhamondre Stevenson(332 yards, 5 TDs) and widereceiver Marvin Mims (28receptions, 483 yards, 7 TDs)are making plays all over thefield. That bunch will probablyface their toughest test to date, but something tells me Rileywill have a little somethingextra for WVU come Saturday. My pick, Oklahoma 33, WestVirginia 26

Texas A&M at Tennessee:Fisher has Aggie fans excitedand they should be as theformer Florida State coach hasturned the program around injust three years. And the goodnews for A&M fans is the factthis is still a very young team, especially at the skill positionson offense. Running backIsaiah Spiller (784 yards, 6

TDs) is just a sophomore andwhile Fisher will lose seniorquarterback Kellen Mond(1,573 yards, 16 TDs), he hasyoung talent waiting in thewings to take the program tothe next level. Two weeks ago,Mond and the offense struggledin their 20-7 win over LSU atKyle Field, but the defenseplayed an outstanding game tolead the Ags to a revenge winover the defending nationalchampions (LSU trouncedA&M 50-7 in 2019). Look forthe offense to play much betterthis week as they look to finishstrong. My pick, Texas A&M34, Tennessee 16

NFL

Houston at Chicago: TheTexans look for a secondstraight win over a NFC Northfoe when they visit the WindyCity on Sunday. On Thanksgiv-ing Day, Watson turned in amagnificent performance, throwing for 318 yards andfour touchdowns. Two of thescoring tosses wend to speedywide receiver Will Fuller IV (53receptions, 879 yards, 8 TDs).Fuller has had a nice season(and knock on wood) hasremained healthy thus far.Texan fans hope his goodhealth continues. The Bearshave a decent defense, but thatwas evident two weeks agoduring their 41-25 loss atGreen Bay. I think the Bearswill play better on that side ofthe ball on Sunday and ifChicago running back DavidMontgomery (575 yards, 1 TD)gets going, quarterback MitchTrubisky (802 yards, 9 TDs)should be able to make someplays down field against asuspect Houston secondary, but something tells me Watsonis going to have another bigday as the Texans look to finishthe 2020 season strong after adisastrous start. My pick,Houston 30, Chicago 27

Dallas at Cincinnati:While the Texans were rollingon Thanksgiving Day, theCowboys played like a bunch ofturkeys, losing at home toWashington, 41-16. It was anembarrassing effort and headcoach Mike McCarthy hadsome questionable calls, butthe most glaring was calling fora fake punt at the Dallas 24

yard-line early in the fourthquarter with the game still inreach. Of course, the fake failedand Washington respondedwith 21 unanswered points toput the Cowboys out of theirmisery. Andy Dalton (870yards, 5 TDs) returns toCincinnati where he spent thefirst nine years of his job. Itwould be nice to see runningback Ezekiel Elliott (707 yards,5 TDs) to get back on track andfor Amari Cooper (71 recep-tions, 845 yards, 3 TDs) tocontinue to make plays downfield. The Bengals may bewithout starting quarterbackJoe Burrow, but they playhard. It might behoove theCowboys to do the same onSunday or they will getembarrassed again. My pick,Dallas 26, Cincinnati 24.

Kansas City at Miami:The Miami Dolphins are thenext team that gets to try andslow down Pat Mahomes andthe Kansas City Chiefs offense.Good luck with that. Twoweeks ago, Mahomes (3,497yards, 30 TDs) threw for 462yards and three touchdowns tolead the Chiefs to a 27-24 roadwin over Tom Brady andTampa Bay. While Mahomeshad another big day, widereceiver Tyreek Hill (68receptions, 1,021 yards, 13TDs) had one of the best daysby a wide receiver in NFLhistory as he grabbed 13Mahomes passes for 269 yardsand three touchdowns. KCtight end Travis Kelce (74receptions, 978 yards, 7 TDs)should join Hill as a 1,000-yardreceiver when KC visits SouthBeach and a Miami team thatis a legitimate playoff team. The Dolphins have a soliddefense, but so did TB and yousaw what Mahomes did to theBucs two weeks ago. It shouldbe more of the same asMahomes continues to makeplays to Hill, Kelce and otherChiefs as Andy Reid’s looks totrack down Pittsburgh for thetop seed in the AFC. My pick,Kansas City 30, Miami 23

New Orleans at Philadel-phia: The Saints play theirthird straight road game whenthey travel to Philadelphia totake on the shaky Eagles onSunday. The Saints have

continued their winning wayseven without quarterbackDrew Brees, who is on injuredreserve with 11 fractured ribs.Brees could come off the IR forthis one, but if he doesn’t, SeanPayton’s team is in good shapewith Taysom Hill (397 passingyards/279 rushing yards, 5TDs) running the offense. Theone big difference betweenBrees and Hill is that Breesdoes a good job of gettingrunning back Alvin Kamara(585 rushing yards, 8 TDs/68receptions, 646 yards, 4 TDs)involved in the passing game.Kamara has caught just onepass in the first two games Hillhas started at QB. I don’t thinkit will matter who starts atquarterback for the Saints thisweek because their defense isplaying as well as anydefensive unit in the league atthe moment. Look forEaglesQB Carson Wentz (he threwanother interception in theEagles’ Monday night loss toSeattle) to continue to struggleagainst the Saints defense asNew Orleans picks up anotherroad win. My pick, NewOrleans 34, Philadelphia 18

Pittsburgh at Buffalo:This should be a tough roadtest for Ben Rothlisberger andthe Steelers on Sunday NightFootball. The Bills are tough athome and have a solid frontseven that should be able topressure Big Ben. The Steelerswill be playing their thirdgame in a 12-day stretch andthe wear and tear could takeits toll against the Bills. TheSteelers played a rareWednesday game on Dec. 2when they outlasted theRavens, 19-14 on a cold andwindy day in the Steel City. Itwas not the Steelers’ finesteffort and head coach MikeTomlin ripped his teamfollowing the victory. Twoweeks ago, Josh Allen (3,029yards, 22 TDs/311 rush yards,6 TDs) led the Bills to a homewin against the Chargers. Lookfor Allen to make some bigplays to wide receiver StefonDiggs (80 receptions, 945yards, 4 TDs) as Buffalo pullsoff the upset and make thingsinteresting down the stretch asthe Steelers and Chiefs vie forthe No. 1 seed in the AFC. Mypick, Buffalo 24, Pittsburgh 20

Crazy college season winding down:Texans head to Chicago looking to finish strong

Crosby moves to play-offas Bi-District Champions

CROSBY – Sharp play hasdefined the Crosby Cougars foot-ball team all season but in thefinal game of regular season adisappointing 29 to 24 loss toNederland has made both teamsbi-district champions of 12-5A-II.

It was Crosby’s only districtloss putting them at 6-1 in dis-trict. According to Coach JerryPrieto, “We made some mistakesthat we hadn’t made all year butat the end of the day, they justoutplayed us. I think we will re-focus and come out a differentteam Thursday. We ended up asCo-District Champions and the#2 seed.”

The Cougars (7-3, 6-1) playWillowridge Eagles beginning at7:30 p.m. in the Bi-DistrictRound of play-offs.

It all seemed that this gamehinged on one less long yardagequarterback sneek that putCrosby behind after havingcaught up and surpassed with atouchdown and soon after fieldgoal in the second.

A forced interception putCrosby up 15 – 17 at the half. Itwas obvious that the Bulldogswere playing with full excite-ment and at their highest poten-tial.

The game was really decided

in the third quarter when Crosby pulled ahead 23to 24 with under four minutes left in the quarter. However that is when the momentum shifted. TheBulldogs got the big break with a pass that gavethem near 80 yards and a touchdown. Crosby de-nied them a two point conversion this time but thefinal score had been achieved.

The Cougars forced a turnover through inter-ception but would fumble and not score again.

Long yardage quarterback sneeks aided bothteams.
