President’s Message
Greetings South Carolina Numismatists, Here's hoping that everyone's holiday season went well and that you have had a prosperous new year so far. As we start 2017, the South Carolina Numismatic Association is already busy with planning the 2017 Convention and accepting nominations for the SCNA Young Numismatist Scholarship at the ANA in June of this year. If any YN member desires to be considered to have their expenses paid to go out to Colorado Springs and the ANA's Summer Seminar, there is still time to get an application in and the instructions are in SCanner and on www.sc-na.org. We had no YNs who requested consideration in 2016 and hope to award this each year. The 2016 SCNA Convention was another great success due in part to the many volunteers from the Greenville and Parker Coin Clubs and SCNA Board members led by our Bourse Chair, Dr. Tony Chibbaro. Once again it was another sold-out Bourse in Greenville and large crowds descended on the TD Convention Center over the final weekend of October. This year's planning is already underway and one change this year will be its location—at the Spartanburg Memorial Coliseum due to the fact that the TD Center did not have available space for us for the final weekend in October, 2017. A similar diverse roster of dealers and activities is currently being planned for October 27-29, 2017 so mark your calendars!
SCNA members and Member Clubs are reminded that new policies passed by the SCNA Board allows for monetary assistance in several methods for attending the SCNA Convention. Clubs which decide to provide transportation to the Convention will be reimbursed up to $300 for car, bus or van rental (which can include a driver) to the show. All that is needed is a rental receipt submitted to the SCNA Secretary and your club can provide free or reduced cost transportation to your members. Another benefit is for YNs (and their families) who travel to the Convention to present an exhibit are eligible for up to $100 travel reimbursement for food, lodging and miles travelled. Submitting these reimbursements to the SCNA Secretary are all that is needed for reimbursement. Happy collecting in 2017 and remember that this year’s Convention is in Spartanburg!

Camden Coin Club News We hope everyone is planning to attend the Club’s Spring coin show on March 18, 2017. The show will be at our usual location, Camden Recrea-tion Department, 1042 West DeKalb Street, Camden SC 29020. The show hours are 9 am until 3 pm. The club is working hard planning the show and expects to have a full Bourse. The club has had only one meeting a month during November and De-cember. In January we resumed our twice per month meetings on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday at First Community Bank Building, 631 West DeKalb Street, Camden, SC. Everyone is welcome to attend. The club has scheduled its Fall coin show for Saturday, September 16, 2017 at the Camden Recreation Department… We are expecting another sold out Bourse. We are expecting the return of all of the dealers from our Spring show.

Midlands Coin Club News Hat’s off to another great year for the Midlands Coin Club! The fourth quarter yielded some busy but prosperous times. First of all we had our entry into the SCNA Club exhibit. This year’s theme was Military in South Carolina. The Midlands exhibit displayed numismatic items (some rare and one of a kind) related to Fort Moultrie and Fort Sumter. Our exhibit was the chosen winner. We would like to thank the club members that contributed and set up the display. It was great! The 2016 Fall show in Columbia was a huge success. First of all, we had a full house, secondly we hosted our first Boy Scout merit badge program. Originally we had 12 young men sign up but ended up with 18 instead. We had representatives from three different troops and quite a few parent helpers. Everyone was able to qualify and earn their badge after the session. We gave away coin prizes and gift certificates to be used at show. The program did very well. The gift certificates were redeemed and even the parents got in on the action of buying.

We had many parents thank us for the program and the boys loved it! This will definitely be something we will do in the future. The spring show will be here on May 4th at the American Legion Hall #6, 220 Pickens St., Columbia, SC 29201. if we get enough interest we will host the Boy Scout Merit badge program again. On a side note, all of the gift certificates earned for our exhibit program in the fall were also redeemed at this show. It appears gift certificates are HOT! Our membership is currently around 53 members and it is time to sign up again! We invite you to join our fun group! We are looking forward to a prosperous 2017 and only expect better things to happen. We meet at 7 PM every second Thursday of the month and have a speaker or presentation, auction, business meeting and FUN! Our meetings are held at the Cayce His tor ica l Museum, 1800 12th St reet , Cayce, SC 29033. All the details can be found on our website at www.midlandscoinclub.com and our Facebook page.
Myrtle Beach Coin Club News The club's annual Christmas Party was held on December 6, 2016 at Brothers Shuckers Oyster House with 65 people attending including two special guests, Kathy Edens of Horry County Meals On Wheels and Sheila Conroy, President of the Myrtle Beach Car Club. After everyone had dinner Club President Rick Ciano presented various awards. Richard Guay and Richard Spinney both received Appreciation awards. Club Education Officer Allan Cooper (our 1st President in 1962) received the Special Presidents' Award. And Club Auctioneer Buddy Gore was awarded the Member Of The Year Award. Immediately following the presentation of awards the club presented Kathy Edens a check for $2,000 for Horry County Meals On Wheels, bringing our total donations to them to over $32,000 in the past 6 years. Sheila Conroy then presented a $1,000 check from the Myrtle Beach Car Club to Horry County Meals on Wheels. After the presentations were done everyone in attendance received a nice gift and a good time was had by all.

Greenville and Parker Coin Club News The Greenville and Parker Coin Clubs combined efforts for the annual Christmas Meal in 2016. The turnout was spectacular and a good time was had by all. The clubs are excited for another strong show with the Upstate Coin Show on February 17-19, 2017 at the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium Lower Arena– hope to see everyone there. In Memoriam– the clubs mourned the loss of long time member Ronnie “Motor” Brooks was lost his battle to Cancer on December 29, 2016.

Greetings Young Collectors!!! The YN Corner is a column for our young numismatists (YN). If you have any collecting questions or suggestions, you can contact me at: [email protected]. Welcome to 2017, Young Collectors! I hope you were able to find nice
examples of coins for your collection during the year. Have you received any South Carolina Fort Moultrie quarters yet? The Fort Moultrie quarter launch took place November 17, 2016. It was too bad it was held on Thursday, a school day. By the time you read this article you should be seeing 2017‐dated coins in your change. The mint will be releasing five new quarters in 2017: Effigy Mounds National Monument, Iowa; Frederick Douglass National
Historic Site, District of Columbia; Ozark National Scenic Riverways, Missouri; Ellis Island (Statue of Liberty National Monument), New Jersey; and George Rogers Clark National Historical Park, Indiana. Please feel free to contact me to report any unusual or interesting coins from your change.
Just a reminder to all our young collectors who have been collecting the
President dollars for the past few years: the last three dollars were issued in 2016 ending the series. Now would be a good time to look for any of these coins you are missing for your collection. Currently the dollar coins (and
Kennedy half dollars) are not being produced for general circulation. The U.S. Mint makes these coins for sales to collectors. The excess minted coins are put into storage until needed or destroyed by the government. Your best chances to find these coins are from the Mint until they sell out, visiting your local coin dealer, or attending a good coin show or Conference.
Shelby Plooster named SCNA’s YN of the Year! The South Carolina
Numismatic Association is pleased and proud to announce Miss Shelby Plooster has received the rebranded Robert W. Ross, III, Young Numismatist of the Year Award for 2016. Shelby, a 16 year old Evans, Georgia, resident and member of the Augusta Coin Club (a SCNA‐member club) was the winner of the 2014 Austin M. Sheheen, Jr., Scholarship and received the 2014 SCNA’s YN of the Year Award. She regularly wins top awards for her numismatic

exhibits, participates as a valued member of her coin club, is active in her church, and is a straight‐A student. In addition to her local activities she has just returned from her 3rd trip to the ANA Summer Seminar program where she is excelling in advanced courses. In 2016 Miss Plooster was honored by a special biographical article in The Numismatist, the American Numismatic
Association’s magazine. Very well done, Shelby!

ANA Summer Seminar applications for 2018: The SCNA is now looking for a serious YN to attend the 2018 ANA Summer Seminar in Colorado Springs,
Colorado. Applications for the 2017 scholarship were reviewed in January and results will be announced in February, 2017. The Austin M. Sheheen, Jr. YN Scholarship program awards a $2000.00 scholarship for tuition, room and board, and transportation to a deserving YN for a week’s session at an ANA workshop. Further information on the ANA Summer Seminar can be found on the ANA’s website at www.money.org. The program is open to SCNA YN
members age 13 to 18. Applications can be found in the SCanner; by

Breaking News on the 2017 SCNA Convention! Due to construction and scheduling issues at the TD Convention Center in Greenville, the SCNA leaders have decided to move the Convention site to the Spartanburg Auditorium for October, 2017. cancel just before the event. The Mint has been invited to return again this year. We hope to see them in October.

United States Mint Launches 35th America the Beautiful Quarters® Program Coin in South Carolina
WASHINGTON - The United States Mint (Mint) joined the National Park Service today to launch the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program coin honoring Fort Moultrie (Fort Sumter National Monument) in South Carolina. The coin's reverse (tails) depicts Sergeant William Jasper returning the regimental flag to the ramparts while under attack from British ships. "This new coin stands as a tribute to the bravery and self-sacrifice of those who believed our fledgling Nation deserved a fighting chance," said Mint Chief Counsel Jean Gentry. Additional participants in the ceremony included Barclay Trimble of the National Park Service Southeast Regional Office; Timothy Stone, Superintendent of the Fort Sumter National Monument; Pat O'Neil, Mayor of Sullivan's Island; Dan Head, Regional Director for U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham; Kathy Crawford, Regional Director for U.S. Senator Tim Scott; Bill Saunders, Regional Director for U.S. Representative Jim Clyburn; and Laurie Turner, Regional Director for U.S. Representative Mark Sanford. Event highlights included a coin forum the evening before the event; a special firing of reproduction muskets during the ceremony by National Park Service staff in period attire; and a coin exchange, where event attendees traded their cash for $10 rolls of newly-minted Fort Moultrie (Fort Sumter National Monument) quarters. The Fort Moultrie (Fort Sumter National Monument) quarter is the 35th release in the United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Program, a 12-year initiative to honor 56 national parks and other national sites authorized by Public Law 110-456. Each year, the public sees five new national sites depicted on the reverses (tails sides) of the America the Beautiful Quarters. The Mint is issuing these quarters in the order in which the national sites were officially established. The United States Mint was created by Congress in 1792 and became part of the Department of the Treasury in 1873. It is the Nation's sole manufacturer of legal tender coinage and is responsible for producing circulating coinage for the Nation to conduct its trade and commerce. The Mint also produces numismatic products, including proof, uncirculated, and commemorative coins; Congressional Gold Medals; and silver, gold and platinum bullion coins. The Mint's numismatic programs are self-sustaining and operate at no cost to taxpayers.
Special Report from the Low Country Coin Club: The US Mint wrapped up the 2016 America the Beautiful Quarter
Program with the launch of the Fort Moultrie quarter, November 17, 2016, on the grounds of the 240-year-old Fort Moultrie facing the Charleston, South Carolina harbor.
As always, the ceremony was attended by many area residents and about 200 fourth grade students from Sullivan Island’s Elementary School and Lamb’s Elementary School from North Charleston.

After the speeches and the official pouring of the coins ceremony, each youth under the age of 18 was given a collectible Fort Moultrie quarter. Jean Gentry, United States Mint Chief Counsel told the young people receiving the quarters to hold on to them so they can tell their children about the historic day as well as the historic event depicted on the coin.
After the ceremony representatives from Mt. Pleasant South State Bank exchanged over $23,000 worth of the new quarters to those wishing to purchase $10 rolls of the new Philadelphia quarters at face value.

The quarter depicts Sergeant William Jasper who during the Battle of Sullivan’s Island against the British, on June 28, 1776 risked his life to retrieve the colors and re-plant the regimental flag on top of the fort with his fellow soldiers cheering him on. The Battle of Sullivan’s Island was the first and considered by many, the most important battle in the history of the fort and it was one of the first decisive victories in the American Revolution. Fort Moultrie is a unit of Fort Sumter National Monument, encompassing 171 years of coastal defensive history from the American Revolution through World War II. Fort Sumter is in the center of Charleston Harbor less than a mile from Fort Moultrie. Charleston, just across the harbor from Fort Moultrie, and Sullivan’s Island are recognized as the entry point for nearly half of captive Africans shipped to North America. A sweet grass basket made by Angela Manigault was used for the symbolic coin pour to highlight the African-American heritage of this state. Members of the Low Country Coin Club attended the launch ceremony and with the permission of the Mint officials used the time before and after the launch to promote the club and the upcoming February coin show, passing our wooden nickels and cards.
Trying to fit in with the historic mode of the event, Alex Gilchrist, a long-time club member, who bears an uncanny resemblance to a couple of characters from American History, dressed as Uncle Sam, posing for pictures with people young and old attending the event. It is possible some of the youth were more excited to see Uncle Sam than they were to receive the quarter passed out by the mint officials. Continued on page 36

The Fort Moultrie quarter is the 35th coin to be released in the America the Beautiful series of quarters. The Mint will continue to release 5 America the Beautiful Quarters a year depicting National Parks and historical sites, ending with a single quarter release in 2021. The evening before the Quarter Release Ceremony the US Mint held a Coin Forum at the Fort Moultrie theater open to anyone interested in the Mint. Jean Gentry spoke about the Mint operation and a Fort Moultrie representative gave a briefing on the history of the fort.

Applicants for the Austin M. Sheheen, Jr. Young Numismatist (YN) Scholarship must be a member in good standing of the SCNA. The applicant must be between 13 and 18 years of age. Previous SCNA Scholarship /Educational Grant Awards recipients are not eligible. SCNA will decide each year what amount and number of scholarships are to be offered the following year conditioned upon funds being available for the scholarship. The local coin clubs can decide if club funds can be contributed to the SCNA scholarship winner(s). YNs will be judged on their contributions to their local coin club, the SCNA and their accomplishments in school, religious institution or community activities. The applicant must write a letter of self‐nomination stating the reason(s) he/she would like to attend an ANA Summer Seminar. Also, the applicant must have at least 2 nominations with one being from a local coin club member or SCNA member who personally knows them. The other nomination should be from a school professional, religious institution or community leader who is involved with the nominee in one or more of these activities. Nominations should describe the applicant’s contribution to the group. Any questions about the nominating procedure should be directed to the SCNA Secretary.
