- resolutioni Whereas, It Has pleased the Al- tnighty to remove from our midst, Mrs. William H. Woodin, our dearly beloved friend and member of the poard of Managers of the East Hampton Free Library, therefore ; Resolved, That in the passing of Mrs. Woodin to her reward, we have sustained the loss of a friend whose fellowship it was a pleasure to enjoy and a manager regular in her
I attendance at the meetings and faith- ; ful and efficient in the discharge of Iher duties; that we note with ap- i preciation her keen interest in the welfare and progress of the Library; that we bear witness to het many fine traits of character and the excellent work accomplished by her quiet, assuming manner and sound judgment;
Resolved, That we offer to her bereaved family our heartfelt sympathy and pray that our Father may comfort them in their sorrow and help them to carry on in her memory the work and interests dear to her in life.
Resolved, That these resolutions be sent to the family, spread on the minutes of the Library and published in our local paper.
Committee; Mary C. Hand
Mary T. Dayton, President Florence Smith, Secretary

East Hampton Free Library Gets Land Gift For Expansion
Kimball Family Deeds Valuable Property In Memory of Maie Kimball
The East Hampton Free Library formally received yesterday a gift which will help to make possible, in the not too distant future, a much- needed addition. The Library was built for the community in 1912 by Mrs. Lorenzo E. Woodhouse and the late Mr. Woodhouse. The Cloister and Red Room were added by Mrs. Woodhouse in 1931, and the fireproof Gardiner Memorial Room was built that year by members of the Gardiner and Thompson families to house the Pennypacker Long Island Collection, which is growing so fast that for the present much valuable material has to be stored outside the fireproof room. An addition is vitally needed and there is no room on the present lot. This condition was brought to the notice of Alden Kimball of New York and East Hampton and his brother, Geoffrey Kimball of Barnes Road, Creighton, Mo., and these gentlemen, realizing the need and the benefit the expansion of the Library would be to the community, generously decided to give their property to the Library Trustees for this purpose. Their sister-in- law, Mrs. Charles Edmunds Kimball Jr., widow of a third brother, joined them in completing the gift but reserved the privileges of occupying her home on the premises for five years. The property is given in memory of Maie Kimball and Charles Edmunds Kimball, father and son.
The property comprises about an acre. It is bounded on the south by the present Library property, and by Mrs. Theodore Weston’s summer place; on the north by a private road and the East Hampton Star Office; on the west by the home of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Rattray; and on the east by Main Street. No plans are announced for the use of the land or buildings.
This land was owned up to 1899 by the Hedges family who once owned the land the Library now stands on, also what is now Mrs. Theodore Weston’s property at the corner of Buell Lane. It was sold by the heirs of Mrs. Esther Hedges to Everett J. Edwards. At that time, the

East Hampton Free Library Gels Land Gift for Extension
Continued from Page OneDavid Hedges made table silver for East Hampton a century ago, stood somewhere back from the dwelling house and from Clinton Academy, in its own little fenced-in garden. The shop was moved further back for use as a summer cottage and in 1901 Mr. Edwards built the drug store building which now houses the Star. In 1916, the house was sold to Mrs. M. Louise Marshall. She sold it in 1921 to Mrs. Daniel Tahnage. Rockwell Talmage sold it to Miss Floretta J. Holcomb, who sold it to Mrs. Charles H. Mapes, the former Mrs. C. E. Kimball, in 1927. Many changes were made on the house by thOhnwlUrirouse hext to -Jnliin> S.
Mrs. Marshall, and much of it was moved away. Mrs. Mapes had summered in East Hampton for many years, and her sons were brought up here. She added to the property by buying from Clifford Edwards the old orchard, which she made into a garden.
Alden and Geoffrey Kimball feel a deep affection for this village, which they have evidenced by this ' gift. So does Mrs. C. E. Kimball, the former Miss Louise Voorhees, daughter of the late Dr. James Voorhees and Mrs. Voorhees, whose summer home was on Dunemere Lane, the house now owned by Mr. and Mrs. Valentine Havens.
Charles Edmunds Kimball rented Myrick’s summer home, in 1909, and spent every summer in East Hampton after that. He bought the property at Woods Lane and Main Street
which is now Mrs. W. Sterling Peters’ in 1906; after his death in 1920, Mrs. Kimball sold that place (known locally as the Dr. Osborn place).
Mrs. Mapes was always much interested in the library, and often remarked about the number of people who used its facilities. She was a great reader herself.
The Library’s facilities are being used more and more each year, by writers and others who come here from distant points for study. Mr. Pennypacker’s gift of his unique collection and of his own time for the ten years in keeping it up to date has proved of inestimable value to East Hampton and the rest of Long Island. Mrs. Pennypacker, who has been Librarian since the present Library was organized, has made this outstanding among public libraries in its scope and service. The Library’s Board of Managers and Advisory Board have administered the present property wisely and well; there is no doubt that some day these combined properties will prove to be a show place on our Main Street.
