President’s Address Dr. Erik Paulson, MD, FSCBTMR
Dear SCBT-MR Members, Fellows, Colleagues, and Others,
This last “Presidential Message” is a thank you note written with heartfelt gratitude.
Thanks for mentors who encouraged me to attend and participate in the society’s annual meeting. I recall listen-ing to radiology giants give top notch lectures which combined deep understanding of cutting edge technology with appropriate practical clinical translation. Further, I remember a welcoming atmosphere and ample opportunity for socializing, questioning, and colleague-making. I knew then it was an important career step to engage with SCBT-MR.
Thanks for accepting some of the scientific work I submitted. Those presentations and ensuing discussions were among the highlights of my career. I strongly encourage our learners and rising faculty to sub-mit as much of their work as possible to the SCBT-MR.
Thanks for voting me in as a “fellow” of the society. In my cap, the society feather is one of the prettiest and brightest. It has been an honor to develop deep friendships and collaborations with our amaz-ingly strong and talented group of fellows.
Thanks for appointing me to the SCBT-MR Board. The board is engaged, active, and hard-working and is deeply dedicated to the society and its various missions. Our board is outstanding and I was honored and humbled to serve.
Thanks for having me as President of the SCBT-MR! It has been a tremendous honor, one of the highlights of my career.
And, I greatly look forward to continued involvement in our Soci-ety.
Sincerely,
Erik K. Paulson, MD, FSCBT-MR

2016 Meeting Update
Andrew D. Hardie, MD
Medical University of South Carolina
From the standing room only seating in the expansive main
exhibit hall to the overflowing room for the morning round
table discussions, it is clear that our society had one of its
most successful annual meetings. For the first time ever,
the meeting was preceded this year by the Multi-Energy CT
Workshop followed by the typical jam packed agenda of
world class lectures,. It was the right time to highlight this
emerging CT technology, which will likely become a signifi-
cant part of routine clinical care in the next few years. Not
only was this session an opportunity to introduce more
practitioners to the concepts on multi-energy CT, but it led
to lively discussions among the experts as to the applica-
tion and future direction of the technology. This lead to the
regular annual meeting formally getting underway with a
thought-provoking presentation on value driven health
care by Vivian Lee, CEO at the University of Utah.
The educational program again included timely and top-
quality presentations from many established national and
international leaders in the field. On the other hand, sever-
al speakers were relatively new faces; faces that will be-
come more familiar to us all. One of the highlights of the
program, as usual, was the scientific session. The society
has sought to slowly expand the opportunity for young in-
vestigators to present both oral presentations and their
posters orally, which continued to great success this year.
Our society took time to celebrate the careers of several of our
members and giants in the field of imaging with the annual Gold
Medal Awards. At the awards banquet, we were regaled by the life
experiences of Melvin Korobkin and Joseph Lee, while we remem-
bered the monumental career of Morton Bosniak. During this event,
the society was also happy to present an award for Outstanding Ser-
vice to SCBT-MR to Dr. Eric Tamm. Many of us in the society can
attest to his tireless efforts to not only improve the society for its
members but more importantly increase the exposure of the society
to new potential members.
On the other side of the career circle, the society has made an in-
creased effort to be accessible to members in-training. To this end,
we began a new tradition this year of inviting all in-training members
to a breakfast focused on improving their involvement in the society.
This was well attended by fellows and faculty and proved to be high-
ly rated by the members. Our society is also pleased to welcome
several new fellows to the society: Priya Bhosale, MD, Les Folio, DO,
Reena Jha, MD, and Avinash Kambadakone Ramesh, MD.
The Society wants to express its appreciation to everyone who con-
tributed to making this meeting such a success. Plans are already
underway for next year’s meeting to take place in Nashville, Tennes-
see.

MACRA Resources: Understanding MIPS and APMs Reprinted from ACR.org The Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) repealed the sustainable growth rate (SGR) formu-la. It also replaces existing quality programs with the Quality Payment Programs (QPP) in which physician payments will be based on participation in one of two pathways: the Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) or Alternative Pay-ment Models (APMs). These programs reward physicians based on performance data and taking part in new payment and delivery models.

Physics Tip of the Day!
Truncation artifacts could appear as bright areas on the edge of an obese patient’s CT exam when tissues lie outside the scanning FOV. Extrapolation procedures or truncation artifact correction can be applied to reduce or eliminate the bright areas thus showing periphery of the patient more clearly.
