I t is my great pleasure, on behalf of the Singapore hockey fraternity, to welcome all participating teams to the SCC International Hockey Sixes 2013.

The SCC Sixes has grown in strength over the years, and it has now become a key highlight of the local hockey calendar. The development of hockey in Singapore should be broad based and as such, it is heart-ening to see clubs such as the Singapore Cricket Club and many others undertake initiatives to develop the game at youth, social and competitive levels. We look forward to more such initiatives from our affiliates.

With an established following both locally and internationally, I am sure that the SCC International Hockey Sixes will see lots of excitement, thrills and goals over the 2 days.

I wish all participants, supporters and the Singapore Cricket Club and its Hockey Section a very successful tournament.

presidentsingapore cricket club

A s part of the Singapore Cricket Club’s efforts in promoting and organising international tournaments in Singapore, we now bring you the 19th Singapore Cricket Club International Hockey Sixes Tournament 2013, which will be held at the Padang on Saturday, 2nd and Sunday, 3rd March 2013. I take this opportunity to welcome the teams and their officials, players and supporters, the umpires, the sponsors and advertisers, the spectators and the Club members to this fantastic hockey extravaganza, which brings with it an extremely high quality of play and fierce competition. The event is also a great social gathering of the hockey fraternity. Thirty six men’s teams and 24 ladies’ teams from among countries such as Malaysia, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, Australia, UK, Indonesia, Thailand, France, Japan and Singapore will come together to fight for honours and to treat the spectators with their outstanding performances. Last year’s champions, Singapore’s Recreation Club (Men) and Sri Lanka’s Seetha Devi Sports Club (Ladies) will return and attempt to retain the honours. Every year we have seen the teams returning with better and well trained players, which has helped to improve the overall standard of the tournament from year to year.

In addition to the efforts of the participating teams, success of such an international tournament depends on sponsors, advertisers and donors to whom I am very thankful for their vital support. I must also thank the SCC Hockey Sixes Organising Committee led by Mathavan Devadas, for their efforts, time and commitment in order to make the Tournament a success. The SCC Sports Department, as usual, will ensure that all the facilities are a 100% ready for such an important Tournament. Thank you Janet and the Team. Please come down to the Padang on Saturday, 2nd and Sunday, 3rd March 2013 and participate in the extraordinary mix of top class hockey and a fun-filled weekend of social togetherness.

Ithe SCC International Hockey Sixes 2013.

The Organising Committee began work as early as July 2012 preparing for this tournament, such was the enthusiasm for the event. That enthusiasm has been unwavering with members giving up weekends and evenings to ensure that preparations are in place and adequately executed. It has been a great pleasure working with such a dedicated group of individuals.

Once again it is heartening to see the interest for the tournament from teams from all around the world. There is a very good mix of teams from Asia, Oceania, and Europe. I cannot say it enough, that it really is the teams that make the weekend with their sportsmanship and desire just to have fun playing hockey. I am sure the weekend will be one of wonderful hockey, warm fellowship, great partying and all around good fun.

There are 60 participating teams again, 36 men and 24 ladies. The ladies tournament has grown especially and we hope one day that both competitions will have an equal number of teams.

A special thanks to our Sponsors and all other advertisers who through their continued loyal support and generous contributions have made this year’s tournament a reality.

A very special thanks to the Singapore Cricket Club Sports Department and grounds staff who worked very hard to ensure that this weekend was possible.

I wish all participants and supporters a fun filled weekend and a safe journey home.

Messages from the gods

chairman games control board, scc

There couldn’t be a better place to be in, than SCC’s Padang field on this cheery weekend to observe the fun filled and exciting event of the year - the 19th Singapore Cricket Club International Hockey 6s Tournament.

As the Hockey 6s is always held around the 1st quarter of the year, it is the first of five major international tournaments that the SCC organizes yearly. Hence, it is heavily scrutinized to set the pace for the other tournaments, delivering thrill, excitement and fun. This year we’ll see more than 50 teams competing in this friendly tournament with zest, fervour and dexterity.

Every year, the Hockey 6s boasts of an abundance of junior players and certainly no lack of the adult-ver-sion either. This year, we can be sure that this distinguished tournament will not fail to awe the spectators and the players. SCC has the expertise and the resources to host such a phenomenal event and will not fall short in providing enthusiastic players and spectators with a one-stop event of game, food, drinks and fun.

Our sponsors played a huge role in making this tournament such a sensational event too. Their contribu-tions go a long way in enabling us to drive up the standards of presentations, style and professionalism. I thank all sponsors for their generous contributions.

Most of all, my heartfelt gratitude to the Sports, Marcom, Groundsmen and all other who played the back-end supporting roles, these people work through the months to get everything in order and provide all necessary support to the organizing committee........THANK YOU!

For now, sit back, relax and enjoy!

On this weekend, we reach back to hallowed antiquity, to bring you the 19th International Singapore Hockey 6’s at the SCColesseum!

On the Padang hockey players from 60 teams and brute nations, hell bent on merciless enjoyment and entertainment will do battle with sticks not swords.

To the victors beer, wine and freedom and the losers a bloody good weekend as well, on my signal, unleash hell!

“Hockey Players....I salute you!”

Well, hopefully not everything - what goes on tour stays on tour after all. Welcome once again to the highlight of our hockey year here at SCC. As ever, we look forward to an epic showcase of talent in the pool, on the dance floor and maybe even on the hockey pitch.

A huge thanks to the organising committee for their gladiatorial efforts in putting this weekend together and to all the players for joining us from around the world and from here in Singapore.

Have a cracking weekend and ....... “may the odds be ever in your favour!”

NOS VENIMUSNOS LUCIMUS

CONVIVIUM FECIMUCS(WE CAME, WE PLAYED, WE PARTIED)

For those of you not fluent in Latin, here’s some info…..Latifunda – large posh estate and garden

Plebs rustica and plebs urbana – do I really need to translate this????Thermae – bathing and relaxing area

I MARTIVS MMXIII – friday 1st march

Arrive in the Republic by chariot, ship with sail or winged vessel.Have your slave tend to the safe deposit of equipment and feasting robes in your

chosen villa. Make haste to the grand latifunda known as The Padang and enter the SCColosseum to join the Senate gathering (Managers Meeting) to discuss battle

tactics and partake in hospitality.

Beware; plebs rustica and plebs urbana may not enter the inner sanctum. After consulting with the Senate, it is advised you pay homage to the demi-God that

is Magumbo Magumbus until fully hydrated ready for the battles to come.Return to your chosen villa and make battle preparations.

II MARTIVS MMXIII – saturday 2nd march

Wake as the lark rises and return to the SCColosseum. Note; plebs rustica and plebs urbana may enter the SCColosseum to do battle. There will be many battles under the heat of the day; drinking and feasting will be a requirement to ensure strength

and endurance prevails.Thermae facilities are available for post battle relaxation and recovery. Note the thermae rules and regulations.

As the Sun sets, battles will cease and preparations for the grand feast will startFeasting and debauchery will start at VII hours and XXX minutes and will continue

long into the night.

After the feasting and debauchery at the SCColosseum, homage again should again be paid late into the night to the demi-God that is Magumbo Magumbus.

III MARTIVS MMXIII – sunday 3rd march

Final battles will commence and only the fittest and most skillful will progressRehydration and recovery will continue and the thermae will also be a place where only the most daring will go and survive. As the strongest gladiators do battle under

the fierce tropical sun, Champions will be made.

The Gods will descend from the heavens (aka the VIP box) and the SCC Senate will watch on as Champions are named, rewarded and honoured for their fierce sporting prowess. All gladiators will be acknowledged and praised for their participation and

encouraged to return to the SCColosseum within the Republic of Singapore.

timpeach.

Mid Life Crisis clearly hit Tim badly

this year. As he turned 40 he decided to

embark on this epic ultra marathon

of 250km, having never even run a half

marathon let alone a full marathon before!

This self supported stage race involved 4

days each of marathon distance, followed

by day 5 which was a double marathon.

However, due to poor navigation on Tim’s

part this 86km stage turned into 100km!

This was done carrying a 10kg rucksack

containing all his provisions for the week.

The course began in Wadi Rum, near

the Gulf of Aqaba in Southern Jordan,

and snaked Northward across the 3

deserts to finish in-front of the magnificent

Treasury façade in the ancient city of Petra.

Tim completed the race in a total

time of 42hrs, coming through the

finish line in 51st place.

MT KINABALUIT’S NO PICNIC.....

In September 2012 Ros Spink, the SCC Ladies Captain finished third in the 50k TMBT Ultra-Trail Marathon in the foothills of Mt Kinabalu in Sabah, Borneo. Ros has since regained her sanity and promises never to do any-thing that silly again. Paviter Singh the SCC Ladies 1st XI Manager on the other hand, remains a few sandwiches short of a picnic.

He completed the 108k version of the Sabah event - it was supposed to be 100k but he got lost at the 93k mark - and will be following that with an attempt at a sub-20 hour 100k at the North Face 100 in the Blue Mountains, Australia in May.

We all wish him the best of luck for the race and hope he is able to navigate his way back to Singapore for the rest of the league season.

“When Mark and Pauline aren’t running round a hockey pitch like a pair of 14 year olds they can be found on Tanjong beach over on Sentosa with their outrigger canoes and their OC buddies.

After 10 years of dragon boating on the River Kallang they decided a change of scenery and activity was much needed and, when an OC Fairy Godmother tippy-toed onto the beach and declared she was selling two single seat OC’s, they knew it was the right time a switch to OC.

Saturday and Sunday mornings are now spent rigging boats and paddling off in the direction of St Johns, Ammunition Island, Lazarus Island, Two Sisters and the like, in either a 6 crew boat or a single OC.

So far only baby-distances (for the OC fraternity) have been paddled, 8-15km at a time, but given some time and training and Round the Island races in Hong Kong are in their sights. Look at for them down at Sentosa most weekends!

“After the last darts social, Christine fell in love with the game so much so that when she learn about Dartslive she made it a point to sign up for the league.

The game of darts was first introduced to many juniors during a hockey social last June. Everyone enjoyed that session very much despite the great majority being first timers. The first encounter with the electronic ver-sion of darts came during one of the post-hockey game dinners along Jalan Kayu. Since then, playing this version of darts became more regular amongst a number of the juniors, such as Max, Ting Hao, Shakthi, Pradap, Jonathan, Sean, Christine, Jamie, and Shingo.

Currently, 3 of them (Christine, Max, and Tinghao) have signed up for a darts competition. Representing one of the bars that host these electronic darts machine, there are home and away games competed every monday. The next game on 4th March will be held at 8pm, Forest Darts Cafe, Max, Tinghao and Christine have contributed much to their team, Loco Bulls’, current top of the group standings.

SLUPS SCC LADIES UNDERGROUND

PARTY SCENE BY SHARON DHILLON

“The band’s formation can be traced back to 27 April 2012, during SCC An-nual Sports Awards night. With many talented members in SCC, the ladies had an idea of forming a band. Soon the idea was well on its way to becoming a reality with Petrina, a seasoned performing guitarist and Christine, our very own drums teacher.

Shingo who’s been secretly learning the bass was roped into the band immediately. Through all the late nights jamming sessions, we uncovered many of Jamie’s hidden talents as she strummed away on the guitar, started jamming on the drums.. and melodiously played the keyboards. She was shy initially but after a few sessions, Joanne dominated the keyboards. In the midst of sitting for her bar, Dharinni or more prominently known as Billy would sneak out of the library and blow us away with her vocals. They say 7 is a complete number and after watching the girls jam away through the night, Sharon couldn’t resist joining them.

The ladies first started jamming in Jiawen’s living room and slowly leveled up to a music practice studio at cityhall where they never fail to meet up every week. All their efforts paid off when Kirsty slot the band in for their first performing gig during the Hockey Awards Night on 17 November 2012. Kirsty believed very strongly in the band and sup-ported the ladies all the way! The band decided to adopt the name S.L.U.P.S. which was created by the ladies in July as a platform to mobilize its members on the coolest parties in town.

During their debut performance, the band rocked the Hockey Section at the Padang res-taurant with 5 songs demonstrating their variety in performing different genres. Stay tune and keep an eye out for S.L.U.P.S. ‘s next performance in 2013!”

“I am currently in my 5th & final year of med school. I’m the study hard, play harder kinda girl...may not fit into the med student-geek stereo-type. Med school has been fun. Lots of memories, countless hours of studying...can’t believe 5years have flown by.

Nevertheless, I always found time for hockey (e.g. reluctantly playing a prem game the evening before my exam - haha thank god I passed! ) This is actually my10th year playing hockey...all 10yrs playing for SCC! from U21 to Div 1 to Premier league..I guess I’m a veteran junior player!

I started playing hockey thinking it was ice hockey..never saw the ice but 10years on and I’m still here. I love the people, the culture in SCC, the sport and how it never fails to get my adrenaline pumping....and yes...I still see myself playing hockey for a long time...........maybe forward? Hint-hint coach!!

We trust them on the hockey pitch....

...but would you trust them on the sidelines?

A touch of mega brain power, a love of food and a spot of creative thinking......

“Jiawen started playing for SCC in 2007 as a midfielder, five years on and she’s a key striker for the premier team. More popularly known as @epic-superstar on the web, Jiawen co-founded Poached Mag and Chic Kiss Love. We highly recommend browsing through poachedmag.com while you’re in Singapore so you won’t miss out on the coolest nightlife and happenings.

If you can’t decide on where to eat, let poachedmag help you! And for the ladies out there, if you haven’t gotten an outfit for the dinner event fret not.. Chic Kiss Love will spoil you rotten which their wide selection of dresses and accessories.

the gIrl about town: jIawen... trust her with your social life

Jamie’s cooking classes allow her keep up with the flavors of Singapore, here are some of her creations.”

Jamie started playing hockey with SCC in 2006. When she’s not on the field, she is helping her parents at The Royals Cafe.

Jamie attended a 2-month Certificate Program at the At-Sunrice Global Chef Academy. The Academy teaches the basics of cooking; knife skills, dry-heat & moist-heat cooking methods in different cuisines (Western, Chinese, Malay, In-dian, Thai, Singaporean).

“Most memorable dishes I learned to cook: Sambal Stingray, Thai Salt-Baked Tilapia (Plaa Yang Glau), Pineapple Fried Rice (Khao Phad Sapparot), Tandoori Chicken & Naan (in an actual Tandoori Oven!), Bubur Cha Cha, Rosti & Bibimbap.

I enjoyed spending time with my classmates, who were of all ages, nationalities, and walks of life. Also looking forward to learning something new each day made it worth it to wake up at sunrise everyday. I loved the experience of cooking in the Main Production Kitchen where we had to mass-produce lunch for 200pax featuring different cuisines everyday.

The only thing not so memorable was the cleaning up we had to do everyday; I’ve cleaned more, in those 2 months, than I have in my entire life!”

Keepers beware.. she brings her fast-pace career onto the pitch so always be on your toes if you don’t wish to get caught off guard! Even we can’t keep track of the number of goals scored by this superstar”

tournament for a very long time the XXXth

Olympiad’s field hockey competition was well

organized and very well attended.

With matches starting at 8am in the morning

and finishing at 9.30pm at night there were

full houses every day and in every session.

Some teams were very well supported with

brass bands and cheer leaders.

The blue pitch although taking some getting

used to, was a big winner too. Almost anyone

who watch it on television was very positive

about the image value. The organisers also

fabricated and set up mini hockey blue turf

playing areas and it was perpetually crowded

with young children having a great time.

Just as hockey players need to be agile, so do investment companies. Which is why we’re delighted to be sponsoring the

19th Singapore Cricket Club International Hockey 6’s Tournament, one of the largest 6-a-side hockey tournaments in the world.

A different way of thinking, a different way of investing – we are innovating to perform.

The Olympic Park was very compact and easy to get about, and although the traditional English weather (rain

and cold) made things a little unpleasant for the first few days, even that cleared up in the second week with

plenty of sunshine and clear blue skies.

The hockey was of the highest standard as would be expected, but some teams were especially good to

watch……like the Dutch women!

And it was the Dutch women who took the gold medal, but not before they were made to work very hard by

a much improved New Zealand team in the semi-finals. The Dutch were taken to a shoot-out and were actually

behind on the shoot-out at one point.

In the Men’s competition, Germany and Netherlands were most impressive. Australia, although the

reigning World Cup and Champions Trophy winners, were not able to produce the same form that

won them those competitions. However the very fast emerging team is Belgium. They only just missed

out on a semi-final place and finished 5th overall.

The men’s final was one the best hockey matches ever, with both sides showing excellent skills and

tactical awareness. That there had to be a winner was a shame, but as someone once said……

”Hockey is a game of 70 minutes and at the end the Germans win!”

of poor construction and a pole vaulting Spaniard. The incident is still under investigation, but so far no witnesses have willingly come forward. This year SCC troops have been deployed to ensure the safety of the pool goers and the beer jugs.

The Hockey SCChool is continuing to recruit and is looking forward to turning out more champions in the years to come. Working in 6 lessons in one block, the SCChool has a syllabus and works on 6 blocks of lessons per season. Focussing on the FUNdamentals of hockey, the SCChool prides itself on instilling fun filled sessions which are lively but meaningful. Within the block of 6 lessons, there is one clinic session with an Ex-International, one internal tournament and one external tournament.

However, we have not secured the SCChool’s participation in the world renowned SCC Sixes! But we will start the finals programme off with an exhi-bition match between The Hockey SCChool and an invited local academy! This would be an experience the champions would never forget and always remember!

Finally, parents are as important facet in the players’ development and we are proud to say that we have parents packing the seating gallery at all our train-ing sessions, for which we are very grateful.

If you want to have a go at our humble SCChool please contact our coach Kanan at: [email protected]

THE HOCKEY SCCHOOL WHERE WINNING ISN’T

EVERYTHING BUT EVERYONE’S A CHAMPION! BY COACH KANAN

The Hockey SCChool is a the latest hockey academy to hit the turfs of Singapore with the first proving to be a big hit back in the latter part of 2012. With limited marketing but a big programme the school launched with 11 kids and steadily grew to 21 with 10 of its attendees joining the Sin-gapore Cricket Club (SCC) as Junior Sporting Members.

Run by the SCC’s very own head coach, Kanan Packrisamy, the school is based on enhancing the strengths and nourishing the weaknesses of players that join.

Working on a measurement tool where each player is as-sessed on a weekly basis, the SCChool hopes to develop players with a champion’s mentality that will go on to achieve at the highest echelons of the sport that we all know and love.

With the promotion of 10 players to the senior ranks, the clubs has now recruited another batch of new players that look set to make swift headway through the esteemed doors of SCC in the months ahead.

This pathway ensures that the holistic development of the player from the academy stage to one in a club environment. The presence of many teams inculcates the need to compete for places and that aids to challenge the prospective champion to rise to the occasion and continue their drive to becoming an accomplished exponent of the sport.

Ben Rogers (Captain) Best memory: reaching the 2010 final the casual way, watching a Spanish bloke (no names) not so casually failing to vault the paddling pool thus creating a mini tidal wave part destroying the cricket square, being part of a solid yet casual 10 man human pyramid, Mr Chambers’ casual covert poolside camera work.

Hopes for 2013: casually avoiding any infectious diseases from the pool. In the words of Anthony Hopkins “the Welsh have a talent for life that one does not find in the English. The English lack heart”

Christian Bischoff:Best experience: Playing at the sixes

Worst experience: Not having scored a single goal at the Sixes in 2012. This year, besides the regular hockey action, I would love to see everybody in the pool between games, amazing costumes, hopefully no rain, and of course all teams at the Saturday night party!

Julius Marks: This is my first SCC Sixes for SCC, last year I played for my German club. I feel privileged to be chosen and am excited to be able to play for SCC at this great hockey carnival. I hope to be involved in some exciting games and enjoy the festivities.

“Remember...there is always a little girl in the stands that wants to be just like you, don’t disappoint her.”

Gerald Goh: I am very excited about playing in the SCC Sixes and hope to perform to my potential and of course I also am looking forward to the party which is talked about the world over.

singapore cricket clubhost team

A few words can be used to describe the SCC Devils: honorable, hardworking, dedicated and not to mention crazy

(this is not mean to offend anyone, but you know who you are).

This team was put together from a motley crew of characters mainly to participate in the annual SCC Hockey Sixes but since

then have grown into from strength to strength and will be representing the club once again in this year’s Sixes tournament. And keeping this bunch in line are Captain Martijn de Blauwe

and Team Manager Intekhab Khan.

The Devils aren’t just a social team from SCC playing in the Sixes but they also make up part of the vast network of volunteers needed to run the

annual tournament. So it isn’t surprising to see them running to and from their various matches and then to see them as a pitch official or time keeper or or score keeper shortly after.

On the pitch, the players play hard and sometimes, they win and sometimes they lose, as they say “sometimes the bull dies, sometimes the matador dies”. So they revel in their victories but they do not dwell on their losses, then it’s back to work. And that cycle continues on through the entire tourna-ment. Not an easy nor enviable task, but they get on with it and get things done. There is no glory but I am sure the satisfaction they get from everyone

enjoying the tournament is more than enough.

Off the pitch, these guys are very sociable and they do know how to have a good time and when to let their hair down, though some are lacking in that department.

The Devils are a force to be reckoned with, on and off the pitch, with hockey stick in hand or beer in hand, they show their love and dedication for the

sport, to the team and to the club with the all their sacrifices and contributions.

So do look out for them this year at the 2013 SCC Hockey Sixes.

we’ve got a better chance of survival if we

work together”

With the infamous reputation the team created for themselves in 2012, it was a nerve racking wait to see whether the tournament organisers and the Singaporean government would in fact let them return. With the acceptance in to the tournament received, it would seem that they weren’t as bad-ass as they thought they were. So they are back in 2013 to lift their game and to talk a whole lot of smack.

Oreo (Captain) has been gallivanting across the world, seeking international hockey tips and tricks like a true captain does in preparation for a world renowned event such as this. Unfortunately, all the Olympic teams she met on her travels laughed in her face when she told them of our quest for the bowl/plate/cup.

Fortunately the team has three consistent players they can always count on to take the field and also make sure that the rest of the team do in fact get out of bed to show up to the games. Bec is definitely the politest out of the three enforcers, until you get on her bad side. She’ll be more than willing to distract the opposition with friendly chit-chat on the field but when the ball is near, its game on. Sally is the rover of the team, she’ll just keep running until she can feel last night’s booze lingering. She’ll be defending one minute and then be diving to get a goal deflection the next. I guess you could call her a bit of a ninja. Elita is also a bit of a rover with a slightly more intimidating temper. She does not like people to get all up in her business, and when this happens she whips out her angry eyebrows and gives you a look that makes you feel guilty for tackling.

After returning home empty handed in 2012 it was agreed that we would go on a recruiting spree to draft some new players. To our surprise, the reputation we have created for ourselves interfered with recruiting real talent. Luckily these three were available as backups. Chels will fit nicely in the team as the muscle in the back line. Don’t be fooled by her well-kept appearance and twinkle toe run - she is fierce. She also likes to help the umpires out by raising her hand whenever a call should go in her favour. Dani also is a sneaky little player. She confuses her opponents when she plays hungover by running around in circles like a headless chook. Just another tactic to watch out for. We strategically recruited Sedge hoping she will take on the “mother hen” role; to round us up and get us into order or, at the very least, get us to the games on time!! (something we struggled with at last year’s comp).

Last but definitely not least, you have the double trouble, the team motivation and inspiration (their words, not the teams), the babies of the team, Beattie and Gertie. Averaging three hours of sleep per night in 2012, the mischievous duo are looking forward to a repeat performance. Gertie aka Kate struggled a little more than her counterpart during SSC ’12 and by day two chose to become a cheerleader with a jug of Pimms on the sideline, rather than sweat the rum out of her system. This year we are hoping (but not really expecting) to get a bit more game time from her. But when she does take the field she giggles her way through the games, lifting team morale quite considerably. Beattie aka Jaz prefers to skip the hangover and remain drunk in order to be able to participate in the games. She’s been known to take to the field with a face full of glitter in hope to blind the op-ponents with the sun’s reflection. She prefers not to run so you’ll likely find her lingering in the attacking circle.

If you don’t mind being asked if you play hockey a couple of times per hour or being told that you sound like you’re from London, then you should definitely have a brewski or six with these gals.

Our story begins with Paul ‘Spanky’ Maley, who is the president of the “He-Mods Women Haters Club” with many school-aged boys from around the GMLA (6050) as members. His best friend, Scott ‘Alfalfa’ Sumner, has been chosen as the driver for the club’s prize-winning go-kart, called “The Sphinx”, in the annual Singas Sixes Soap Box Derby style race. However, when the announcement is made, Scott ‘Alfalfa’ Sumner is nowhere to be found. Having told the boys he was making his way to level 4, he is caught lurking around level 2 in the company of Jarryd ‘Darla’ Higgins -- “a girl!” Scott ‘Alfalfa’ Sumner isn’t like his friends because he’s in love with Jarryd ‘Darla’ Higgins, and unfortunately threatens the very existence of their “boys only” club. The club’s members try their hardest to break the two apart, eventually causing their beloved Veryard clubhouse to burn down. Jarryd ‘Darla’ Higgins is mistakenly led to believe Scott ‘Alfalfa’ Sumner feels ashamed of her, so she turns her attentions to the charming bear like qualities of Richy ‘Waldo’ Low, the new rich kid whose father is an oil tycoon.

Further trouble ensues when their prized go-cart “The Sphinx” is stolen by local neighbourhood bullies Tom ‘Butch’ Jockel and Josh ‘Woim’ Leslie. How can they win the big race and its prize trophy?! In addition to having to rebuild the Veryard clubhouse, the boys now need a new set of wheels. They band together to build “Sphinx 2: The Sequel.” Prior to race day, Paul ‘Spanky’ Maley and Scott ‘Alfalfa’ Sumner reconcile in a fashion that to the untrained eye looks like a spear tackle, and decide to ride in the two-seat go-kart together.

Other members of the “He-Mods Women Haters Club” include, Phil ‘Porky’ Murdoch, the youngest looking old bloke of the gang and Anthony ‘Buckwheat’ Chiappalone, the unfittest fit-man. The two can be found running amuck together in and around Clarke Quay, however, do not rely on them to send love messages or turn up to games on time. There is also Ciaran ‘Uh-Huh’ Sanders, who has an extensive vocabulary but rarely chooses to use it because he lets his smile do the talking.Only time will tell if the gang can rally together in the face of adversity, inebriation, plastic army men and women, to win the annual Singas Sixes Soap Box Derby style race.

The Monsooners Ladies Touring Team returns for a second year. Com-prising a compliment of Australian and Singapore based players, the Monsooners are keen to play in the best and most excellently organised tournament in AsiaPacific.

This year is made up of a number of seasoned professionals -Julie Hoare and Linda Kennaugh – both players having played in the Singapore Sixes Tournament at least four times before (both too old to actually remember how many). In addition, this year will be the first time for Cara Burton, our youth policy, and member of Mods Hockey Club. Cara recently played in the U13 National Championships in Perth, WA and is looking forward to learning a few tricks this time on grass. Newly recruited Cath Lucas also makes her first appearance in the team. Cath is president of Mods Hockey Club and the team will benefit from her leadership skills – mostly on the dance floor.

Monsooners

The Monsooners Ladies Touring Team

The Monsooners Men are padding up for a fifth tournament appearance. Fortu-nately the socialising has always gone very well as opposed to the team’s Singa-pore 6’s finals hockey results. The Sunday knock out thing always tends to be an issue for some unknown reason with Glenn surpassing the dancing skills of most on the dance floor in his Storm trooper outfit! Monsooners will no doubt be red hot favourites to depart in the first knock out stage of the Cup.

Perhaps surprisingly the mainly Darwin based team has had some success at the end of 2012 with 3 of the team (Spits, Fabio and KB) playing in the Northern Ter-ritory team which took gold in the Australian National Masters in Hobart, which says it all really! The team’s youngsters will quickly adjust to this pace! Packed with goalies and full backs Monsooners will promise to get the crowd off its seats (as they pass to the bar).

The team is looking forward to another great tournament and comprises of: Kevin Burton (GK), Clayton Archer (Full Back & El Capitano) , Andrew Spittle (born again Centre Half)), Dave ‘Bags’ Money (Team Obama aid & Libero), Simon George (GK & Forward), Glenn Kirkaldy (Full Back), Gary Cox (GK & Forward), Steve Rowe (Environmental Forward) and Jim Rowe (Full Back).

The team would not be complete without Hilary Wilkins and Penny Goldsmith. These two players are based in Broome and Kununurra and lend to the team our blend of interstate and international players, as well as strength in the forward line (Penny) and dastardly defence in the backline (Hilary). Given their remote locations in Northern WA, they are also very familiar with the tropical conditions and will be well acclimatised for the tournament.Abi Vasantha and Heike Schimitzek are our Singapore based players. Again, prepared for the heat and humidity, these two players are deadly on the pitch and we look forward to benefiting again from those fancy goal finishes and excellent tackles!

In somewhat of a coup for our team, the Monsooners have managed to convince Sharon Kirkaldy, the goal keeper from last year’s winners of the bowl, to join the team. Armed with one of the tournament’s best goal keepers, the Monsooners are confident of our greatest results ever - and if not, we will have a great time trying!

The RIHP Qld Rubies is a youth hockey team created to provide pathways and opportunities for young indigenous girls across Queensland. Players come from Queensland centres of Cairns in the north, Rockhampton in central part of the state and Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Toowoomba in the south east. Being part of this competition is a reward for the commitment they have given to this program and it is an opportunity to test themselves against teams from all over the world. The Rubies is an ongoing program and one in which these girls become role models for younger indigenous girls and promote healthy living choices, importance of education to future successes in life and in general encourage greater numbers of indigenous people in Queensland to play hockey.

Rubies & Blaze

The RIHP Qld

The RIHP Qld Blaze was created in 2012-2013 to provide opportunities for young indig-enous Queensland male hockey players to increase their skills, fitness and strength and to assist and support these talented young men in challenging themselves to achieve future successes in life and in hockey. They come from all over Queensland and only get to play a couple of times a year but these young men become role models to indigenous youth in some of the more remote communities with Queensland and show that regardless of the result they are all winners.

VIOBA

Victoria Institution Old Boys’ Association Hockey Team

The Victoria Institution Old Boys’ Association (VIOBA) is the alumni of the Victoria Institution, Kuala Lumpur, one of the oldest and most prestigious schools in Malaysia. The school was established in 1893 and the alumni in 1922. We are the oldest school alumni in Malaysia.

The association caters for its members and old boys alike with various activities through the year. This includes social and sporting activities. The Hockey club is one of the most active lot amongst the old boys, carrying our flag all over.

Over years, the VIOBA Hockey Team have been very active in the local scene, and since 2007 been taking part in tournaments outside of its domicile. The current team/squad, started off (and still is!!), as a social hockey group, playing friendly games as well as in the local Kuala Lumpur League 3.Having taken part in the SCC 6s in 2011, where we somehow brought back a little trophy!!!, we look forward to this year’s edition, and hope to better our overall placing. We will be bringing fairly much a fun yet competitive bunch of players, and can’t wait to get cracking with the games (and the ses-sions after!!!)

Melos Mix

japan

Hello everyone!

We are Melos mix (former name is Melos 85).We are very glad to take part in SCC 6es again!

Last year, we participated in the SCC 6es for the first time. We enjoyed playing hockey,

But we could not play in the top league. This year, we would like to playing in the top league!

We are also looking forward to meet participating team members.

We asked the squads a few questions to get a feel of what hockey and the Singapore 6’s means to them…..

“Divide and conquer.”

Southern Stormtroopers are back for their 4th tilt at the SCC Hockey 6’s. Unfortunately this year there has been recruitment by a “Darker” side. Former Stormtroopers Berro and Baulders have, to quote Yoda, “chosen the quick and easy path” and “become an agent of evil”, or in this case the Redmen, a new team to the SCC 6’s in 2013. As with all teams, we wish the Redmen an enjoyable tournament.

The team looked a little “experienced” last year. As such, the off season recruiting campaign has the youthful Ash Parker being added to the touring Party while ageing veterans of Cam Murray and Michael Jorgensen have been omitted. This has had the combined effects of lowering the aver-age age some 0.003 days and increases the squad’s experience in hockey games played. In addition, the squad’s aerial skills, pace and tee shirt colour selection skills have improved despite Ash not being particularly strong in any of these areas.

This year Banker, Derek, Dinesh and Wiz return for their 4th run with the Stormtroopers. Cakey returns for the 3.5th time after last year’s Friday night “preparation” unfortunately resulted in him missing Saturday. Battsy and Hally return for his 3rd run while Mutsy returns for his 2nd.

UWA

University Western Australia

Slade “Slagro” Patman is a key position player slotting into the teams defence. He has the umpires wrapped around his little finger through various means including magic, extortion and bribery. Watch out for his “gentle” poke tackle which has ended many careers.

David “Pex” Albrecht is the king of all things green, especially mojitos. Is likely to surprise the pundits with a skilful display off the field. If he were a fine wine he would get better with age.

Guy “Boat” Peterson is at the time of this publication still negotiating a sponsorship deal with the Boat (AKA the Marina Bay Sands) after making a good impression during the 2011 and 2012 editions of the tournament. Expect to see him up front or down back but don’t expect a lot of running from him this year.

Ilario “Greasy” Dichiera is a 2012 Premiership player and B&F winner, with a winning attitude that should drive teammates to perform higher on and off the field. Can his 2013 season reach the highs of 2012?

Steven “Walshy” Walsh is probably the fittest of the old boys. There’s no stopping this lad and as a returning player after a year in absentia we are all keen to see just how much his form has changed in the intervening year…surely you still get better with age?

Kieran “Toffee” Sadlier is our playing manager. More machine than man he brings years of experience in a variety of different injuries to the table. Expect him to spend more time on the massage table than on the field.

Kyle “insert nickname” Jeffery is the last line of defence and the last thing many attackers will see when they close their eyes at night. Has impressed many with his pre-pre season form.

Kieran “Noddy” Ryan is a new comer to the team making him somewhat of an unknown quantity. We are hopeful that he will wear his Noddy hat throughout our campaign for glory in 2013.

Cam “Jano” Jansen is another first timer to the Singapore 6s who has passed the strenuous selection criteria (he has the money). Hopefully his fresh legs will help us to avenge last years defeat.

Marty “Mary” Heyting is returning after serving a two year ban from the team due to unnatural and unfair ability

The annual pilgrimage to Singapore 6’s is now becoming a thing of legend for the UWA team. Much debate has been held within the team on the merits of on-field performance vs early retirement to the bar, and the jury is still out on which of the two pathways the team will pursue in 2013.

The playing roster for 2013 is a good mix of old, new and returning players with enough consistency to be recognisable as the same team, but enough change for on-field surprises to still be possible.

One thing that always remains constant is the drive to lead the way in the social elements of the competition, we are here to meet and enjoy the com-pany of everyone, so make sure you come say ‘G’day’.Bring on Singapore 6’s 2013!

The Tornado lads are mostly a mixed bag of Singapore expats that come together as a great team when it counts. The boys won their division last year and also won the annual Vietnam Hockey Festival in Ho Chi Minh City. The Tornadoes love hockey but they also love to party.

The Singapore tornados ladies team is a multinational, multi-talented group of ladies many who have played together for multiple seasons. Hockey is the focus but there is a strong emphasis on fun and antics. The team play well together on the pitch and party well off the pitch.

Liquorice All Sorts, Kuala Lumpur is an all social hockey club founded in 2004 by Scotsman, Keith Brown and our Manager, Malkit Kaur and current Team Captain, Jerome Robertson. With no age-limit, the club is made-up of ladies & men, locals and expats, professionals as diverse as engineers, doctors and bankers as well as students and housewives (and house-husbands).

As a hockey team, Liquorice All Sorts never fails to get invited to various open as well as veteran tournaments locally and abroad, and despite playing to have fun which is our ultimate goal, we have nevertheless done well on the pitch despite being the only team with a lady goalkeeper.

Liquorice All Sorts organized its Inaugural Veteran Hockey Tournament in August 2012, which was a huge success. We hosted 16 teams from Malaysia and Singapore to a full day of fun-filled hockey fellowship on the turf. This year the Veteran Tournament will be held on 24 August 2013. The International Sports Club of Indonesia

“The International Sports Club of Indonesia (ISCI) is a loose mix of largely tropo expats and unstable locals, which has existed in various forms, shirt colours and bars for over 25 years. Whilst our keenness to get to the bar is occasionally interrupted by games of hockey, we remain fiercely competitive (as drinkers anyway).

ISCI’s ability to have fun while trying to play hockey, through hangovers, missed alarms, sleeplessness, apathy, and language barriers (and that’s just amongst our-selves !), knows no bounds and we hope to continue that tradition at the Singapore Cricket Club Sixes in 2013.”

The Hong Kong Football Club will be sending two toga clad teams to the SCC International Hockey 6s this year. The em-phasis, as usual, is always ‘play to win’, but just how a win is measured all depends on which particular game is being played at the time.

Between hockey fixtures these two teams will continue to play hard, and post-game, play even harder. Touring with the Club is about making new friends, re connecting with old, and ensuring there’s always something not to be talked about after… and as always, it’s hoped the 2013 SCC International Hockey 6s will provide plenty of ‘nothing to report back’ back moments.

We are coming back to SCC 6es from Japan. This is our third partici-pation from 2011.We really enjoyed SCC 6es last two year, it is great memory for us.

Previously, we participated this tournament as named “YOKOE JA-PAN”, however since Mr. Jun YOKOE who was our head coach left Singapore at the last August, we invited new head coach Mr. Tatsu OKAWA. (Now, Jun is appointed for honor manager of our team and may back to Singapore for this tournament???)

OKAWA

We are from Japan. We take part in this tournament for the second time. Last year, we took second place! But, why are we satisfied with the result?! We aim at winning in this tournament this year!! And of course, we enjoy playing hockey!

By the way, we started working for each company from last April though we were playing hockey together all the time until then. So we are happy for playing hockey together at last after such a long time! And we are thankful to the concerned with this tournament for giving us fabulous opportunity!!

Most of our team started his hockey career at the same team “KEIO hockey”. It makes good combination and will help us to win the tournament. We promise to show our best performance at the SCC 6es. We much appreciate forSCC for the giving us such a great opportunity. We love hockey, we love Singapore. Let’s enjoy tournament together!

Once again, we are delighted to be returning for the 2013 Tournament. We are fielding a team of seven, with some new faces. This year Tammy has retired as goal keeper and the very capable and talented Samantha Dickens will be our keeper, Sam is also known as “Sammy the Bull”.

Taylor Mickle is still our “young gun” and Susie “the star” who entertained us immensely last year on the pitch promises that this year is the year she will shine. Look out for Susie, she will most likely be the one wearing the “Princess Crown”.Some of you may be wondering where the lovely Michelle Latham is this year? Well fear not, Michelle is taking a year off but promises to be back for the 2014 Tournament.

Once again, we are looking forward to socialising on and off the Pitch, as some of you are aware, socialising is of high priority. Hydration strategies last Tournament failed, so these shall be stepped up and carefully managed by Tammy. The team is looking forward to some pre season hockey to get us warmed up, as usual it will be fun, maybe amusing but definetly entertaining. Many thanks from the team also to Barry, “Bazza” from “Just Hockey” in Perth. (top bloke this one).

Singapore is such a hospitable country and we are looking forward to the 2013 experiences and memories to be had. The “WheatBelt Rebel” team would like to pre thank the SCC staff and committee for the time and effort in organsing such a well organised and an awaited event.

Brendan ‘Ox’ Wright – (Manager)The Big Ox returns to attempt to manage a group of self-confessed trouble-makers. Once again he has his work cut out for him, but this year has the added challenge of it being his bucks weekend. If you see him without a beer, please remedy the situation.

Adam ‘Grinners’ Grinsell (Forward) Grinners was last year’s surprise packet scoring infinitely more goals than the unbackable Jeffers to come away with the leading goal scorer title. More of a surprise was the fact that he was foolish enough to bring his girlfriend on tour. Despite the financial ramifications of this er-ror in judgement, word on the street is that he’s likely to repeat the offence on this tour. We all look forward to drinking your beer again, especially Ox - thanks Adam.

Paul ‘Stuchy’ Stuchbury (Strike Forward)Stuchy is the sides untapped strike forward resource. Sure he has the body and skills of a fullback and the speed of an old lady with a walking frame, but one day when someone is convinced, bribed, threatened, cajoled, blackmailed or silly enough to let him play up forward, I’m sure he’ll manage to kick the ball into the net.

the reds

James ‘Ando’ Anderson – (Full Back)With a reach like a sick dog, Ando is the team’s unbeatable fullback known to tackle players having a shot for goal while still standing on the halfway line. Out for vengeance this year and to make up for some late withdrawals (both from the team and from alcohol), Ando is likely to be critical to our successful defensive plan (Yours Thomo!).

Peter ‘Mooks’ Chapman (Midfielder)Underneath the masquerade of a model citizen, socialite and tour organiser lies an aggres-sive hockey player who will stop at nothing to put on a show for the crowd. For those of you unfortunate enough to face Mooks on the hockey field, you have been warned, make sure you play hockey.... or at least make sure you’re wearing shin pads.

Aiden ‘Knappy’ Knapp (Forward)After a short stint seeking the meaning of life by repeatedly climbing the Great Wall, Knappy has put his name forward to challenge Jeffers for top goal scorer, building on his new found Zen. You will most likely find him at peace under the table after trying to keep up with Ox in rehydrating.

Brett ‘Herro’ Herrington (Former Coach) Coaching a group of old, unfit, broken down has-beens and never wases, who lacked the common decency to go to bed before 4am on game days was too much for last year’s super coach. Unfortunately Herro will not be joining us on this tour.

Rhian ‘Thomo’ Thompson – (Keeper)Thomo is the unintentional leader of our band of merry (inebriated) men. Whenever selecting tournaments to play in, the first words uttered are, I’m not going if Thomo’s not going.... where else are we going to find someone silly enough to wear layers of hot, thick, sweaty pads in 32°C heat

Michael ‘Jeffers’ Jeffree – (Forward)Last year’s favourite for highest goal scorer failed to deliver the goods despite using every tool in his utility belt. Hopefully he channels ironman instead this year and comes packing a bigger arsenal.

Mike ‘Woodsy’ Woods - (Forward) Woodsy is the sides peace loving prankster and former water boy. No longer trusted to hand out drinks at half time, woodsy has been demoted to the forward line this year.... water, water, water, water, tequila anyone?

Adam ‘Butch’ Butcher - (Mid Field)When not being crippled by walking across the side line of a hockey field, or by drinking one or two shandys, this guy can actually play hockey. Watch out goal keepers, Butch has been known to break ribs in previous tournaments, and not just at Tony Roma’s.

The Roaming Redmen have arrived for their SCC Hockey 6’s debut. It has been an event at least 12 years in the planning and with mo-mentum like that, team expectations are very low. Formed by play-ers from the University of Queensland Hockey Club in Brisbane, Australia the Redmen are very excited to tour to Singapore having previously left lasting impressions at tournaments in Hervey Bay, Toowoomba and of course many an Australian Universities Cham-pionship (“IV”).

Western Australia

The Lions from Western Australia are returning to the Lion City and are better pre-pared than ever before. For what nobody is quite sure.

With every year that this team returns to The Padang it learns a little more wisdom and experience and yet somehow the team leaves more confused every year. In previ-ous years this team has experienced some wonderful matches (a lot from the sideline as spectators) and is still attempting to find the key to success at the SCC.

Lots of hydration has been attempted (successfully), as has bringing a ladies team with us but they ended up having more success than us. They also outdid us in their appear-ance as ninja turtles at the tournament dinner last year so the focus for this team this year is not to be outdone by our ladies team.

We are focusing our efforts on off field recovery this year and believe time in the pool could pivotal in achieving our goals. We’re not sure how to achieve it, nor what we are measuring but one thing is for sure, the boys from Suburban Lions will be going hard at everything they do over the weekend.

With exception of believing we are genuine hockey players. As every year we wish to thank the Singapore Cricket Club and the organising committee for hosting the tournament. We are looking forward to returning to the Padang again with the hope we might at last work out what this tournament really is about.Good luck to other teams in the tournament, especially if you come across this bunch. You won’t have any idea what is going on when you come face to face with the Lions.

Sensational Senior Soaks Singapore Safari

The University Associates Women’s Hockey Club has long been sending teams to Singapore and are quite addicted to the long weekend sojourn from Perth. The team changes vaguely each year but the members come from the same mould, which involves up to 30 years playing together, a prolonged period finishing university, advanced age (but honed skills) and a sense of fun. With an average age nearing 50 we are hopefully a role model for girls on the field but not off.

The highlights of the tournament are known in advance. A few days shopping, enticing champagne from senior members of the Singapore establishment at pre-tournament drinks, post-game drinks by the pool at the hotel, a gin sling at the Raffles, food-food-food and watching the finals over a tiger - without regret at being in the finals.

Last season the team won the best dressed award after warning the judge that they would wear the same pink gingham tunic until there was a trophy. Was he the judge or were we as fabulously dressed as we imagined? Will the tunics be back despite the win?

The team this year has some new faces and some old favourites.

Lisa WardA stalwart from early tournaments, Lisa has returned from knee reconstruction with her scintillating tackles and pinpoint passes. Lisa has to judge at the court every day and plans to make no decisions over 3 days - apart from at the bar.

Laura RossOur chief organiser and sporting tragic has returned from her latest barmy army cricketing tour to immediately get her team for Singers in action. Laura is a team player and will swing between full back, striker and even goalie - depending on the whim of the organiser. Laura is there for the party but secretly likes to win too.

Kate MainKate is a striker who is feeling the pressure of being the oldest field player. She does the hard yards but has the distinct disadvantage of getting few goals. Everytime she goes to Singers she meets players she once coached as juniors and now looks old. What does that make her?

Jo BullerJo is our country half back is a joy to play with as she never says die and has time for a giggle. Jo organised a Bruce Rock team last year but as a Soaks player she was hanging to be with her true pink colours.

GlendaOur goalie may be an elder but just try to get the ball by her on a good day. Glenda May be a quiet tourist with a camera but her never-say-die moves have saved us on many a day.

Judy OttawayJudy is one of our Singer virgins who will have twinkle toes on the forward line. Judy is a driving force and will be watching over the team of a night time. Judy will give it all and has one vision in front of goal.

Tiki KelseyTiki is no longer known as a virgin in many areas and will quickly fit in to the fast action as she is the fastest player of her age. Tiki is another mid-fielder who knows grass tournaments and has a Kelsey determination despitethe heat or a young opposition.

Andrew “Hollywood” HannaNew talent to the team. Plays like a combi-nation of Cary Grant’s smoothness and the coordination of Woody from Toy Story. Always entertaining.

George Clooney (“The Mystery Owl”)Negotiations are not far enough advanced with this player’s agent to allow us reveal in January the full the details of this newly acquired player. Needless to say his on and off field play is legendary. Beware !

Jeremy “The Caveat” CulshawLoves the smell of sweaty goalie pads in the morning, especially after a day’s play in Singapore.

THE UNFIT ALLSTARS

Westside Wolves Hockey Club

The club was formed in 1987 with the merger of the Grads Women’s Hockey Club, Cricketers Hockey Club, Old Scotch Collegians Hockey Club, and the Christ Church Hockey Club.

The club is one of the largest in Perth and is based at Cresswell Park in Swanbourne, Western Australia. The club fields senior teams in both men’s and women’s competitions from First Grade to Veterans. In addition, the club has an extensive junior program for boys and girls of all ages.

In its first year of operation, Westside Wolves boasted fifty-five teams plus hundreds of Minkey players. Since that time in 1987, it has won numerous premierships, including premierships in the Classic League, and Premier League, for men and women respectively - competitions which have been recog-

nized as one of the highest standard club competitions in the world.

The appropriately named, Unfit Allstars are a team within the Westside Wolves Hockey Club. The team was formed in 1988 with the gathering of a group of like minded players, whose love of post game celebrations were matched only by their deep hatred of attending training sessions.

The team won the premiership in its first year and followed that success with premierships in the next four consecutive years. More importantly, the team was responsible for orga-nising and running some of the biggest cocktail nights ever held at the Westside Wolves clubrooms.

In recent years, the Unfit Allstars’ Rottnest weekend and the Allstar golf day, and the annual Singapore trip, have been highlights on the Unfit Allstar social calendar.

The team’s most recent premiership was in 2004, having sadly lost the grand final on penalties in 2005, and stuffing it up again in 2006, after going through the season undefeated. The team’s most recent training session attended was in 1987, and the team’s last team function was last night.

The Unfit Allstars have developed a love of touring over the years for hockey-related activities. Team members have attended several Champions Trophy Tournaments, World Cup Tournaments and even the odd Olympics. (Many have said the team will drink anywhere.)

The team attended its first Singapore 6’s competition in 2001 and developed a taste for the sponsor’s products. Hence, a return in subsequent years has become inevi-table.

Chances are, you will find team members located in the bar area over the weekend of the tournament. (That is when their festivities aren’t interrupted by those pesky hockey games!)

You can follow the team’s progress (both on and off the field) at their website:
