TerraCycle is a highly-awarded, international upcycling and recyclingcompany that collects difficult-to-recycle packaging and products andrepurposes the material into affordable, innovative products. TerraCycleis widely considered the world’s leader in the collection and reuse of non-recyclable, post-consumer waste.
TerraCycle works with more than 100 major brands in the U.S. and 22countries overseas to keep used product packaging out of landfills andincinerators. This presentation will focus on our collection program forpersonal care and beauty waste.
Emily Dinan is the Director of Client Servicesat TerraCycle. TerraCycle’s mission is toeliminate the idea of waste. This is donethrough national recycling systems forpreviously non-recyclable or difficult-to-recycle waste. On the client services team,Emily is the key point person for over twenty
recycling programs sponsored by major CPG companies including L’OrealUSA, General Mills, Kellogg’s, Colgate-Palmolive, Santa Fe Natural TobaccoCompany and many others.
Prior to TerraCycle, Emily worked with Social Accountability International,where she studied the SA8000 social standard for measuring humanrights in the workplace and completed the SA8000 Basic Auditor Courseand Examination Thereon for auditing human rights violations in supplychains. Emily has a degree in Socio-cultural Anthropology from ColumbiaUniversity and received a full scholarship to the Professional TrainingProgram at the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance in NewYork City. She performed with the Martha Graham Dance Company intheir 2004 season, “Unparalleled and Unplugged” at City Center.

A new year is here already and in the spirit of the season, I would like toextend a heartfelt “Thank You” to Gina, the Board Members and all of thevolunteers for 2015. I wish everyone peace, health and happiness in the NewYear.
Our November educational dinner meeting was action packed with theEmeritus reunion, officer installation, Lifetime Service and Scholarship awards,and sixth annual Toys for Tots drive. Our enthusiastic speaker, Eric deVries,taught us about the fermentation based manufacture of renewable fuels,solvents and cosmetic ingredients. He answered thought provoking questionsfrom an audience with a wide age range due to the delightful presence ofchildren and grandchildren of our members.
The evening began with installation of the 2016 executive board officersMelissa Tolla (Chair), Cindy Yu (Chair-Elect), Mary Kons (Secretary) and NickGeorges (Treasurer) by SCC Vice President Elect Perry Romanowski.
Next, Dr. Gene Frank presented the 2015 Midwest SCC Scholarship winners.Jennifer Diaz and Anna Gashi were recipients of the Barbara MorleyUndergraduate Scholarships. Andrew Smith and Ezequiel Luna received theGus Kass Undergraduate Scholarships. Sally Yacout and Kevin Nihill wereawarded the Midwest SCC Graduate Research Scholarships.
The “Stanley Allured Lifetime Service Award” was presented to Bob Buzzelli(2015), George Concar (2016) and Dennis Ciechna (2016) for theirextraordinary service to the Midwest Chapter. We took a trip down memorylane as Bob, Denny and George reflected on “the old days” and providedwords of wisdom for the future.
I am looking forward to our next Educational Dinner meeting Tuesday, January12, 2016. We will be on our “winter” schedule: Board Meeting at 4:15 pm,Social Hour 4:30 pm, Speaker at 5:30 pm, and Dinner at 6:30 pm.

Overall Function: The Research & Development Director is the Chief Technology Officer for the personalcare team, responsible for all research including setting R&D priorities and budget to align with strategicplans product development, scouting for new products and formulation activities from productconception to commercialization. This includes responsibility for the quality and safety of all productsand programs.
