ABSTRACT

One of the main criteria for accurate in vitro sunscreen and SPF testing is the ap-plication of the product on the substrate, the PMMA plate. Issues are viscosity of the sample, uniformity of the pressure being applied by the technician during the application of the sample and pattern of application over the whole plate. A me-chanical robotic device can be used to greatly reduce these uncertainties, and im-prove the accuracy of results in the laboratory. Such a device is now available and will be demonstrated in the workshop.

Another area of inaccuracy and lack of consistency is found in the reading of the samples after irradiation. We would like to demonstrate an automatic, computer controlled sampling device, which reduces uncertainties and inconsistencies in sampling practice.

When carrying out in vivo SPF testing, much time is spent setting up the equip-ment ready for irradiating the subjects. We would like to demonstrate a new devel-opment in a traditional method, which will free up technician time and maintain ac-curacy of irradiation from subject to subject and sample to sample.

You Be The Chemist is a program available to students in grades K-8 designed to encourage interest in the sciences. Created by the Chemical Educational Foun-dation and sponsored by the National Association of Chemical Distributors, this program, offered at no cost to elementary and middle schools in the US, needs volunteers and sponsors to expand into new schools in Florida. Consider sponsoring and/or offering to con-tact your local schools to introduce this program. For

elementary schools, a flash drive costing $10 contains content for fun and easy chemistry experiments using common household ingredients age appropriate for grades K-4 and 5-8. Students in grades 5-8 are eligible to participate in the You Be The Chemist Challenge, a fun quiz-type event held at county, state and national levels now celebrating its 10th year with over 30 states participating in 2014. 4 basic necessities for perfect skin!

by Morganna

It is safe to say that we truly are living in the Golden age. Modern technology has helped us go from an average life expectancy of 49 years in the early 1900’s to 74 years in the year 2014. Thanks to the advancement of Science, medicine, sports, a woman or man reaching 40 does not need to worry about not looking pleasing to oth-ers. The progress does not apply to the oldest, as even the youngest people know that it is best to prevent rather than to cure disease, or in this case, skin aging. Pollution, stress, smoke and sun contribute to over 80% of skin aging. Yet, some of us do not even do the basics to protect this vital organ. When we follow some basic rules of awareness for maintenance and prevention, imagine that we can even repair damage that has occurred.

1: Understand that Skin is an Organ

It is the main defense mechanism against exterior aggression, be it physical, chemical or microbial. It protects the body from dry-ing and overheating. It also receives touch stimuli through the sense organ. Did you know that it syntheses vitamin D? Vitamin D is known to help us not be depressed.

2: Know Your Skin Type

Follow these easy steps to find your skin type (Normal, Oily, Combination, or Dry). Simply wash your face with a light scrub. Do not apply any product and wait an hour. Get a Kleenex and press on certain parts of the face: forehead, nose, chin. Find your skin type below:

Normal: if after the hour there is no tightening feeling, no sebum anywhere.

Oily: if there is excess sebum all over the face

Combination: f the T-zone areas have excess sebum, and tightening around the mouth area.

Dry: if there is a tight feeling all over the face. No sebum

3. Exfoliate, Protect, Prevent, Clean

Exfoliate: Pass the age of 30; this should be as natural to us as brushing our teeth. Depending on which system you use, it can only be necessary to exfoliate only two or three times a week. Babies have smooth, soft skin because it is constantly renewing itself. It is scientifically proven that after age 25 that process starts to slow down; going from a cycle of 28 days to almost three months.

Treat your skin: There are so many good products out there that can help in preventing

damage on the skin. Make sure to always look for those which contain high amounts of anti-oxidants.

Protect your skin. Do not go out into the sun without sunscreen. No matter, what you skin color! The sun causes inflammation on our skin at the cellular level; that swelling leads to wrinkles, age-spots and all.

Always clean skin by removing make-up and any residue that may accumulate during the day.

4. Carefully choose your products.

Carefully choose your products by a. Reading ingredient labels, to get an idea of where

the ingredient you are using the product is situated. b Knowing that all products are not

the same in quality. In our world today we had better be looking into organic or biody-

namic.
