In 1946 Tom Hansen started the business in a small shop at 306 Fulham Road, Chelsea. The business grew fast. Hansens could supply anything from a plug-in fryer to a £40,000 kitchen fit-out.

Export became a major part of the business, and with the growth of the market in the Middle East, all of the large major English manufacturers’ export products were handled by Hansens.

Turnkey projects up to £1.2 million were no problem to Hansens, including the prestigious five-star St Pancras Renaissance Hotel. Hansens designed, specified and installed the hotel kitchens, working with conservation and building experts as well as the client.

Hansens also provides bespoke equipment to order, including kitchen fabrication, ventilation, worktops, sinks, benches, char-grills, cooking ranges and refrigeration. We have much experience serving London hotels and restaurants and we are here to offer help and advice.

We are good at what we do and offer real value to our customers. Our supply, design and installation of bespoke kitchens is very much in demand and our new business set-up with South Coast Catering Equipment Ltd has given Hansens the tools to continue our expertise in the field in which our reputation has been built.

Every business has to start somewhere and for South Coast Catering Equipment Ltd it was in a small garage in East Sussex in 1972 by founder Mike Barnes, who had spotted an opportunity to supply kitchen kit to local hotels, restaurants and pubs. From its humble beginnings the company soon began to spread its wings as it became a fully fledged catering equipment distributor and supplier to the hospitality market.

The company is situated in Hailsham, East Sussex on the main industrial estate, with excellent transport links across the south. The offices house its CAD design team, customer services and contract department. South Coast Catering Equipment Ltd specialises in designing and installing bespoke large scheme contracts.

Over the years the company has certainly built up an impressive roster of clients and we put this down to our knowledge of the industry and our after sales service, which is an important part of our business.

Our Service Division was part of our main sales company, but in 2008 it was decided to split it from the main company and form a separate service company to improve efficiency. This company trades today as South Coast Catering Equipment (Service) Ltd. The quality of workmanship is renowned as being one of the best in our industry.

Our partnership with Hansens Kitchen Equipment in 2014 brings to our industry the expertise of two great companies and the confidence to our clients of being able to obtain a professional job, finished on time at a competitive price.

Muriel’s Kitchen

Muriel’s Kitchen restaurants are expanding in London and our client’s instruction was to design and install a ‘production kitchen’ to service all their outlets. The production kitchen, sited at Vauxhall, London, was completed on time, with complete client satisfaction.

Our contract to supply a new kitchen, servery counter and wash-up facilities was completed within two weeks.The facility at Fulham’s training ground for the club players and staff encompassed all the building work too, including new floors and walls, with a new ventilation and fresh-air system being installed.

Park Hatch

A prosposal to demolish the popular pub raised numerous letters of opposition and with the intervention of English Heritage the pub has been saved and given Grade II listed status. SCCE won the contract for the full design and refit of the 60-cover kitchen with substantial extra capacity for outside functions. A Rational Combi is at the heart of proceedings, with Blue Seal prime cooking equipment and Precision refrigeration.

Dale Hill is a 30-bedroom, four-star Country Hotel and Golf Club. The hotel wanted to expand its fine dining restaurant facilities and venture into banqueting functions to accommodate 200+ covers. Our contract was to supply two new kitchens, a new cold storage area and two wash-up areas. We also designed, supplied and fitted the new bars. The contract was competed on time and within budget.

Hawksmoor

St Pancras Renaissance Hotel

The second restaurant in the now well-renowned steak, restaurant and cocktail bar group.Hawksmoor is splendidly located under the streets in the old Watney Coombe Brewery, only three minutes walk from Covent Garden tube station. Hansens designed the kitchen with a customer-facing cook-line, whilst the preparation and storage areas are tucked away behind it.

One of London’s largest prestige projects, the five-star 245-bedroom St Pancras Renaissance Hotel opened after a major refurbishment 138 years to the day it originally opened, as the Midland Grand Hotel. Due to the age and fabric of the building, the kitchen design and layout was particularly challenging. Hansens personnel designed, specified and installed the hotel’s own kitchens, working alongside English Heritage, Camden Council, RHWL and other specialist consultants and contractors.

Casa Malevo

The installation at Casa Malevo had to be well engineered. The basement was completely refurbished, including the walls, floors and ceilings, and the kitchen was designed with space efficiency to fit in all the equipment needed. This small basement kitchen now caters for 40 covers upstairs in the restaurant and the private 12-seater dining area.The complete refurbishment impressed the Argentinean ex-pats Diego Jacquet and Roberto Tavoloni, who had set up the restaurant because they missed the food and wine from their homeland.

Angus Steakhouse

Angus Steakhouse serves high-quality steak, simple, tender and expertly cooked. The proof is in the tasting and behind that lies the well planned kitchen, which copes with the extended hours through lunchtime into the late evening.The layout and choice of equipment was guided by our CAD design team, alongside the company project managers on both sides. The architects and contractors have insisted on using the company as they expand in London.

The maintenance and servicing of catering equipment are very important parts of our business. If carried out properly and on a regular basis, the savings to our customers are considerable. Plus breakdowns on a busy weekend, causing loss of business, can be avoided if the equipment is serviced regularly.

Our call-out charges, which include travel to site and one hour on site, are most competitive and represent good value for money. We also offer regular maintenance contracts and a quantity discount will be offered for large kitchens.

We employ qualified engineers and we have an apprentice scheme for training new engineers.

We are proud of our service team and we have held the service and maintenance contract with East Sussex County Council school meals division for 38 years. We have also held the contract with West Sussex County Council school meals division for 14 years. On both of these contracts we look after over 500 kitchens.

Export projects include supplying $2,000,000 worth of equipment for the Tsvetnoy Central Market, Tsvetnoy Boulevard, Moscow. Two main bars, nine fast food outlets and three restaurants were design by Hansens and the UK-

based Ford McDonald Consultancy.To fit out the kitchens, Hansens supplied more than £120,000 of Charvet prime cooking equipment, 22 Williams cold-rooms and more than 100 Williams cabinets.No matter what your requirement, sea or air freight, packing, insurance, planning and installation, or local after sales support, our experienced personnel are here to help. Our clientsGovernment ContractsThe team at South Coast Catering Equipment has been involved with the planning, design and implementation of many large commercial kitchens throughout Sussex, Kent, Surrey and into Greater London. They include such prestigious jobs as Swanwick Air Traffic Control Centre near Southampton, RAF Brize Norton and Manston Airport, Crowborough TA Centre, HMS Drake in Plymouth and HMS Sultan in Portsmouth, to name but a few. Schools and AcademiesHigh on the list of priorities are the schools and academies in East and West Sussex. The University of Brighton, Uckfield Community College, King Edward School in Witley and many other private establishments of learning. The close relationships established ensures that the kitchens are maintained to a high standard by SCCE Service company so that breakdowns and downtime are minimal. Contract WorkProjects of varying sizes are ongoing with contractors such as Kier Group plc, Balfour Beatty PLC, Sunninghill Construction Co. Ltd, Wates Construction Group Limited and A and F Pilbeam Construction Ltd. From the original tender documentation to the liaison with the main contractor, surveyors, mechanical and electrical engineers down to the chef and staff who use the finished new kitchen, the Project Managers at SCCE will ensure a tightly run contract that meets the demands of the client and will finish on time whatever obstacles might arise.
