WEEKLY NEWS AND MATCH BULLETIN Season 2011/12 No 26 -:- 6th February 2012
It could have been worse . . . and it was! All Ryman League games on Saturday were called off because of frozen pitches, but at least there was nothing to compare with this view from the main stand at Aveley on the corresponding weekend three years ago. By Sunday morning, however, the scene must have been much like this. (Picture: Gavin Ellis/TGS Photo).

In Memory…….
It is with great sadness that we report the death of Sutton United legend John
Rains, at the tragically-young age of 57. Rains played almost 700 games for
Sutton, many of them alongside his brother Tony, and scored 131 goals, mostly
from centre-back. He captained them to successive Isthmian League title in
1984 and 1985, then completed a rare double by managing them to the
championship in 1999. He was also associated, as player or manager, with a
number of other Isthmian League clubs: Bromley, Carshalton, Dorking, Epsom,
Molesey and Worthing. A tribute from Sutton United reads, in part: "John was
one of those rare characters whose love of football and of life enabled him to
cross the boundaries of traditional club rivalries and embed himself in the
affections of supporters wherever he played or managed. "But John’s
contribution to the club goes beyond mere statistics. He was the driving force on
the pitch, a natural choice as captain and the heart of Barrie Williams’ side that
entertained us through the 1980s."
Former Harlow Town vice-chairman Bill Wiseman has also passed away. He
was another well-known figure in Isthmian League circles who was previously
a member of the Purfleet committee.
Ronnie Sturgess, a great servant to Enfield Town F C, Enfield F C and to
football throughout Middlesex, passed away during the small hours of Sunday
morning.
