From Your Pastor……. Last Sunday, we announced a proposed constitution and bylaws
change. First, this change will update the language regarding deacons.
Right now, according to the bylaws, our deacons are to serve three year
terms with an inactive period after every term. This language goes back
to the days when all of the deacons were involved in a family care minis-
try. Each deacon had a list of families that he would stay in contact with.
Every three years he would go into inactive status and pass his list on to
another deacon. The deacons are no longer using this process to serve our
congregation. Instead, we now have a few different ministries that each
deacon can be involved in according to their spiritual gifts.
When I first met with the deacons they mentioned to me that they no
longer felt like a deacon needed to go into inactive status. This process of
being an active deacon for three years and then going inactive was part of
the old way of doing things. Instead they wanted to all stay active all of
the time. I responded, “That’s great. I don’t get to roll off as a pastor
every three years. So, I don’t see why the deacons should roll off every
three years.” This bylaw change is the result of that conversation. I am
grateful for the men who serve our church as deacons. Many of these
men do a lot of important work behind the scenes that often goes unno-
ticed. I think that this change will be helpful for us and help the deacons
to be more effective as servant leaders in our fellowship.
Second, this change in our bylaws will change the quorum require-
ments for business meetings. The number will drop from 40 to 30. Drop-
ping the quorum will help us to use our member meetings more effective-
ly and take care of the business that we need to take care of in an efficient
manner.
We have produced a handout which lays out the details of these
changes. These handouts are on the welcome center table and you can
pick one of these up anytime between now and the member meeting on
August 19th at 6:00 p.m. I encourage you to read over this handout. If
you have any questions you are welcome to talk with Hollis Loveday or
myself.
Grace and Peace,
Jeff

Children’s Worship will resume next Sunday,
August 5th.
We would like to thank all those who signed up to help our church mem-bers who are in need of various types of assistance. We now have a list of people who are interested in helping with this ministry and we will need to determine what areas they are able to help with. If you have a small handyman need, or have difficulty arranging transportation to the doctor or grocery store, please call the office and we will have someone in our ministry contact you.
The Constitution and By-laws Committee will be presenting proposed changes to our By-Laws at the August 19th business meeting and these changes will be voted on. Copies of these pro-posed changes were distributed last Sunday. If you did not receive one, copies are available at the Welcome Center.
Dear Smithwood Members, While reading the most recent issue of the Baptist and Reflector, I noticed Smithwood was listed as one of our leading Cooperative Pro-gram churches by giving per worshiper. Thank you for your faithful generous giving through the Cooperative Program. May the Lord continue to bless you and your wonderful church. Joe Sorah TBMB Compassion Ministries
Enjoy Mighty Wurlitzer organ performances by Dr. Bill Snyder and Fred-die Brabson and special guests, Rare Aire. Rare Aire is a harmonica band from Knoxville. The church van will leave Smithwood parking lot at 11:00 a.m. Sign up on the Keenager bulletin board if you would like to ride in the van.
