PCC-CH501 V Mass Transfer-II 3L:1T:2P (06 hrs) Credits:04

Prerequisite(s): Chemical Process Calculation, Mass transfer-I

Course Objective: The objective of this subject is to introduce the undergraduate students

with the most important separation equipments in the process industry, and provide proper

understanding of unit operations. At the end of study the student will come to know basic

operations of cooling towers, dryer, as well as design of a adsorber and calculations involved

in liquid-liquid extraction and solid liquid extraction.

Course content:

Module 1: 9 hrs

Adsorption: Physical and chemical adsorption, adsorbents, adsorption equilibrium and

isotherms. Heat of adsorption, batch and continuous adsorption, Single-stage, multi-stage

cross-current and multi-stage counter current operations, equipments for adsorption such as

fluidized bed, moving bed & fixed bed, concept of adsorption wave, break through curves,

pressure swing adsorption.

Module 2: 7 hrs

Humidification and Dehumidification: Humidification : General Theory, psychometric

chart, fundamental concepts in humidification & dehumidification, wet bulb temperature,

adiabatic saturation temperature, measurement of humidification, calculation of

humidification operation, cooling towers and related equipments.

Module 3: 7 hrs

Drying: Equilibrium mechanism of drying, theory of drying, various types of moisture in

drying, drying rate curve, time of drying, batch and continuous drying, drying equipments

such as tray dryers, rotary dryers, drum dryers, spray and tunnel dryers, fluidized bed dryers,

etc.

Module 4: 10 hrs

Leaching and Crystallization: Solid-Liquid extraction(Leaching) fundamentals, Solvent

selection, equilibrium relationship, single stage, multistage concurrent and counter current

operation, equipments for solid–liquid extraction, their design procedure and selection

criteria.

Crystallization: Theory of crystallization, saturation, supersaturation, nucleation and crystal

growth, various types of equipment for crystallization, their operational and design

characteristics.

Module 5: 9 hrs

Liquid –Liquid extraction: Fundamentals, Selection of Solvent , ternary liquid–liquid

equilibrium, tie line data, plait point, extraction equipments such as mixer settler, packed &

spray column, stage-wise contact: single stage, multistage concurrent and counter current

operation for immiscible and partially miscible systems.

Course Outcomes:

After completion of this course, the students are able to:

CO1: Knowledge about adsorption theory, types of adsorption. Calculation of single and

multistage adsorption problem.

CO2: Describe the concept of humidification and dehumidification. Design of cooling tower

& related equipments.

CO3: Explain theory of drying for batch and continuous drying. Apply the concept of drying

to calculate time of drying and moisture content.

CO4: Define principle of leaching and crystallization. Calculate the no. of stages for Co-

current and counter current system.

CO5: Evaluate the number of stages by Ponchon –Savarit method & Mc-Cabe-Thiele

method. Design of extraction column.

4. To study the drying characteristics of a wet granular material using natural and forced

circulation in tray dryer.

5. Studies on solid-liquid extraction column.

6. To study the yield of crystals of a saturated solution using open tank type agitated batch

crystallizer.

7. To study the yield of crystals of a saturated solution using Swenson walker crystallizer.

8. To draw the tie lines and plot equilibrium curve for given ternary system.

9. Liquid- Liquid extraction in a packed column for co-current and counter current flow of

binary systems.

10. To Study on Liquid-Liquid extraction on a spray Extraction Column.

The objective of subject to understand the applications of computational techniques for

Newton’s formula, Lagrange’s Interpolation formula, extrapolation, Integration, Graphical

Integration, and Graphical Construction of Integral curves, Numerical Integration.

Interpretation of Engineering Data: Significant figure, Classification of Measurements,

Propagation of Errors, Variation and Distribution of Random Errors, Properties of Variance,

Confidence limits for small samples.

Ordinary Differential Equations: Formulation, Application of Law of Conservation of Mass–

Mixing in flow process. Classification of ordinary Differential Equations and its applications

to common Chemical Engineering problem.

Numerical Solutions of Ordinary Different Equations: Linear Second– order Equations with

variable coefficients, Numerical solution by Runge Kutta Method, Euler’s Method. Its

application to higher–order equations

Formulation of partial Different Equations: Finite difference, linear finite difference

equations, non-linear difference equations, Optimization, types of methods, its application

relating to chemical processes.

Course Objective: To provide the comprehensive knowledge of reaction engineering and

chemical Reactors.

Module 1: 8 hrs

Introduction: Definition of reaction rates, variables affecting reaction rates, classification of

reactions, order, molecularity. The Reaction Rate Constant, concept of kinetics, Concentration

dependent term of a rate equation, temperature dependent term of a rate equation.

Module 2: 9 hrs

Introduction to Reactor Design: Ideal reactors for single reaction: Ideal batch reactor,

steady state Mixed Flow Reactor, steady state PFR, Holding time and space time for flow

systems. Design for single reactions: Size comparison, multiple reactor systems; recycle

Reactor, auto catalytic reactions.

Module 3: 6 hrs

Interpretation of Batch Reactor Data: Differential Method of Rate Analysis, Integral

Method, variable volume batch reactor, temperature and reaction rate.

Module 4: 7 hrs

Design for Multiple Reactions: Parallel and series reactions, selectivity and yield factors,

reactor choice for multiple reactions, Non Isothermal Reactor Design, optimum temperature

progression.

Module 5: 10 hrs

Non-ideal Flow: Residence time distribution of fluids, General characteristics, Measurement

of RTD, RTD in ideal reactor, Tanks-in-series model, Dispersion model, Conversion using

RTD data for first order reactions.

After completion of this course, the students are able to:

Chlor-alkali Industries: caustic soda, chlorine, hydrochloric acid and potassium salts.

Mixed Fertilizers: SSP, TSP, and DAP.

Alcohol industries: formation of alcohol, alcohol derivatives like acetic acid, acetic

Pulp and Paper: Types of raw material for pulping, Various pulping methods, Recovery of

chemicals from black liquor, Manufacture of paper, Quality improvement of paper. Soaps

and Detergents: Types of soaps, Soap manufacture, recovery and purification.

Petroleum based products: phenol, methanol, ethylene, propylene, aromatic benzene, toluene,

xylene, acrylo-nitrite, styrene and butadiene. Synthetic fibers: rayon, polyester, polyamides,

acrylics, cellulose and acetate. Concept of bio-refineries.

Prerequisite Course: Fluid mechanics.

Course Objective: The aim of this subject is to expose the students to understand the basic

piping design and its application to chemical engineering.

Course Content-

Module 1: 10 hrs

IS & BS codes for pipes used in chemical process industries and utilities. Selection of

various piping materials such as Ferrous, non-ferrous and non-metallic. Pipes of circular and

non-circular cross section-velocity distribution, average velocity and volumetric rate of flow.

Flow through curved pipes (Variable cross sections). Pressure drop for flow of Newtonian

fluids through pipes. Resistance to flow and pressure drop. Effect of Reynolds and apparent

Reynolds number. Recommended design methods.

Module 2: 8 hrs

Flow through Process pipes, Shear stress, Shear rates behavior, apparent viscosity and its

shear dependence, Power law index, Yield stress in fluids. Recommended design methods.

Time dependant behavior, Mechanical analogues, and velocity pressure relationships for

fluid, line. Recommended design methods.

Module 3: 7 hrs

Flow of gas-liquid, liquid- liquid, gas-solid and liquid-solid mixtures in pipes, flow pattern,

holdup, pressure gradients and empirical overall correlations, bubble flow pattern, slug flow

pattern, annular mist flow pattern Recommended design methods.

Module 4: 8 hrs

Flow of gas-liquid, liquid- liquid, gas-solid and liquid-solid mixtures in pipes, flow pattern,

holdup, pressure gradients and empirical overall correlations, bubble flow pattern, slug flow

pattern, annular mist flow pattern, Lockhart Martinelli relations, Flow pattern regimes.

Recommended design methods, Case studies.

Module 5: 7 hrs

Functions of valves and their selection, valve materials and, material of construction for the

following type: Gate, globe, Needle, piston, Butterflies, plug. Diaphragm, pinch, foot and

float valves, Application of various valves and their operational characteristics relevant to

piping engineering.

Before the end of semester, each student will have to deliver a seminar on a subject mutually

decided by candidate and his/her guide. The student should select the topic for his/her

seminar other than project work. The seminar topic should be latest and ahead of the scope of

curriculum. The student, as a part of the term work, should submit the write-up of the seminar

topic in duplicate, typed on A4 size sheet in a prescribed format and bound at the end of

semester. The performance of the student will be evaluated on the basis of the contents, the

presentation and discussion during the delivery of semester.

Prerequisite Course: Chemical Reaction Engineering-I

Course Objective: To provide the knowledge of Heterogeneous Catalysis & Reactor Design.

Module 1: 7 hrs

Heterogeneous processes: Classification of catalysts, Preparation of catalysts, Promoters and

Inhibitors, poisoning, General mechanism of catalytic reactions, kinetics of catalyst

deactivation.

Module 2: 8 hrs

Global reaction rate, External transport processes and their effects on heterogeneous

reactions, Effect of external resistance on selectivity, effectiveness factors, Effect of intra-

phase transport, Thiele Modulus.

Module 3: 9 hrs

Design of Heterogeneous catalytic reactors: fixed bad reactor, Fluidized bed reactors, Gas

liquid reaction on solid catalysts in slurry reactor.

Module 4: 8 hrs

Models for fluid - solid non-catalytic reactions, controlling mechanisms, Diffusion through

gas film controls. Diffusion through ash layer controls.

Module 5: 7 hrs

Gas-liquid reactions and liquid-liquid reaction, Rate equation based on film theory, Rate

equation for mass transfer and reaction.

Course Outcome:

CO1: Ability to understand mechanism of catalytic reactions.

CO2: Ability to understand External Diffusion and Internal diffusion in porous catalyst.

CO3: Ability to design catalytic reactor, Slurry Reactors, Trickle bed reactors fixed bed and

Course Objective

The objective this course enables the students to know about control methods and make the

students knowledgeable in various types of measuring instruments used in chemical process

industries.

Module 1: 7 hrs

Construction and characteristics of final control elements such as Proportional, Integral, PD,

PID controllers, pneumatic control valve, principles and construction of pneumatic and

electronic controllers.

Module 2: 7 hrs

Process instrumentation diagrams and symbols, process instrumentation for process

equipments such as Distillation column Absorption column, Heat Exchanger, Reactors,

Evaporators, fluid storage vessels.

Module 3: 8 hrs

Laplace Transform, Linear open loop system, first order system and their transient response.

Dynamic response of a pure capacitive process, Transportation lag, Dynamic response of a

first order lag system, Block diagram reduction.

Module 4: 9 hrs

Second order system and their transient response. Interacting and non-interacting system.

Linear closed loop system, block diagram of closed loop transfer function, controllers,

transient response of closed loop system, Inverse response.

Module 5: 9 hrs

Stability concept, Routh stability criterion, relative stability, Hurwitz stability criterion,

Nyquist’s stability criterion. Root locus technique, introduction to frequency response, Bode

diagram, Bode stability criterion, gain and phase margins, Ziegler Nichols controller setting,

Cascade control system.

Process Equipment

Prerequisite Course: Engineering Mechanics

Course Objective

The objective of this course is to acquire basic understanding of design parameter, complete

knowledge of design procedures for commonly used process equipment and their attachments

(e.g. internal and external pressure vessels, tall vessels, high pressure vessels, supports etc.),

and different types of equipment testing methods.

Module 1: 8 hrs

Mechanics of materials- Stress- Strain relationships of elastic materials subjected to tensile,

compressive and shear forces, Elastic and plastic deformation, General design considerations;

Design of shell, bottom plates, self supported, and column supported roofs, wind girder,

nozzles and other accessories.

Module 2: 9 hrs

Unfired pressure vessel- Pressure vessel codes, classification of pressure vessels, Design of

cylindrical and spherical shells under internal and external pressures; Selection and design of

flat plate, tor-spherical, ellipsoidal, and conical closures, compensations of openings. High

pressure Vessels: Stress analysis of thick walled cylindrical shell.

Module 3: 11 hrs

Tall vertical & horizontal vessels-Pressure, dead weight, wind, earthquake and eccentric

loads and induced stresses; combined stresses, Shell design of skirt supported vessels. Vessel

supports; Design of skirt, lug, and saddle supports.

Module 4: 9 hrs

Bolted Flanges- Types of Flanges, and selection, Gaskets, Design of non- standard flanges,

specifications of standard flanges. Fabrication of Equipment; major fabrication steps;

welding, non-destructive tests of welded joints, inspection and testing, vessel lining, materials

used in fabrication of some selected chemical industries.

Course Objective: To study Modeling and simulation of the chemical processes.

Module 1: 8 hrs

Introduction to modeling, systematic approach to model building, conservation equations,

constitutive equations, classification of models. Conservation principles, Advantages,

limitations and application of simulation.

Module 2: 10 hrs

Non-Reacting Liquid Systems: equation of continuity, application of the model equations,

component mass balances, model behavior: steady state behavior, un-steady state behavior,

Reacting Liquid Systems: Development of steady state and dynamic lumped and distributed

parameter models based on first principles, Development of model of CSTR, Batch reactor,

parallel and series reaction, pseudo first-order reactions, reversible reactions, consecutive

reaction.

Module 3: 8 hrs

Treatment of experimental data: Introduction, criteria for Best Fit, Best Slope-I, Best, Slope-

II, Best straight line, fitting a quadratic, simulation examples of gravity fluid flow, Monte-

Carlo simulation

Module 4: 7 hrs

Development of model of Heat transfer equipment, Batch and continuous Distillation

sequential, simultaneous modular and equation oriented approaches, partitioning and tearing.

Module 5: 7 hrs

Computer programming of various iterative convergence methods such as Newton-Raphson,

False position, Wegstein, Muller methods.

4. Modeling a batch reactor-verification of 151 and 2nd order rate kinetics.

5. Counter current double pipe heat exchanger modeling-data analysis by iterative methods.

6. Simulation of a distillation column-binary systems, equi-molal overflow, constant relative,

volatility.

7. Input-Output response study in non-ideal flow reactors.

8. Simulation of a perfectly mixed reactor with heat transfer. Derivation of a mathematical

model and solving for study state heat transfer.

Microbial growth: Kinetics of microbial growth, Growth cycle, phases for Batch

Unit Operations in Biochemical Process: Agitation and aeration, gas liquid mass transfer,

determination of oxygen transfer rates, determination of Kga and KLa scaling of mass

transfer equipment, heat balance and heat transfer correlation for biochemical systems,

sterilization, filtration and drying.

Module 5: 9 hrs

Design and Analysis of Bio-Reactors: Classification and characterization of different

bioreactors, batch and continuous reactors, tubular, CSTR and tower reactors, aerobic and

anaerobic fermentation-process, design and operation of typical aerobic and anaerobic

fermentation processes, manufacture of microbial products e.g. antibiotics alcohol/ wine etc;

use of whole cells for industrial processes.

Course Outcomes:

After completion of this course, the students are able to:
