The University of Westminster is an international university with a diverse community of students and staff in the heart of a global city. We are very proud of our Scholarship Scheme, which supports students from diverse backgrounds from all over the world. The 2014/15 academic year marks the thirteenth anniversary of this scheme. Our investment in scholarships has helped a great many students realise their potential. The scholarships have enabled them not only to secure a better future for themselves, but also to make positive contributions to their countries and communities. While the programme continually expands and evolves, the fundamental aim remains the same: to enable academically gifted but financially challenged students to benefit from the educational opportunities we offer.

External support for our scholarships programme plays a key role in its on-going success and our partnerships with donors, whether individuals, businesses or charities, is vital. We continue to work with existing partners, such as Santander Universities, to diversify ways in which students can be supported, with new awards aimed at encouraging greater international student travel and financing entrepreneurial initiatives. Attracting further funding from outside of the University is essential to expand the reach of the scholarships scheme and we shall welcome more partnerships in the coming year.

Within the University, our Scholarships Team continues to improve the scholarship application process and to expand our range of awards. We look forward to 2014/15 being another successful year and to welcoming new students and new partners to the University’s Scholarship Scheme.

SUPPORTING EXCELLENCE IN NEEd

EdUCATION TRANSFORMING FUTURES

Education has an unrivalled ability to change lives, both for those who have the opportunity to study, and for those who benefit from their knowledge. Making knowledge widely accessible was one of the founding principles of the Royal Polytechnic institution, University of Westminster’s original incarnation. it is a principle that we adhere to today, with a student body that is incredibly diverse in culture, nationality and background.

Philanthropy has played a vital role in supporting our students from the very beginning, when quintin Hogg made his educational endowment to establish the Regent Street Polytechnic. We remain dedicated to making it possible for outstanding students who could not access higher education without our help to realise their potential.

Our students explore the fields of architecture and the built environment, creative industries, business, law, social sciences, humanities and science and technology. Our staff and alumni have made their mark in many fields, and our current students will go on to shape aspects of professional life in the future and change lives for the better, both in the Uk and internationally. Now you can play a key role in that change.

ONE OF THE LEAdING UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS SCHEME IN THE UK

Today, about 2,000 students at the University benefit from scholarships every year. Our scholarships scheme has been praised for its diverse, flexible and innovative approach

to supporting students. A scrupulous award process based on clear criteria is followed by continual pastoral care for beneficiary students. The scheme’s success has been recognised by the Award for Outstanding Support for Overseas Students from the Times Higher Education magazine.

HELP SUPPORT OUR STUdENTS

in 2013/14 we had to turn down 3,500 scholarship applicants. We want to address this by providing more scholarships each year, and we need philanthropic support to achieve that goal.

Now more than ever, maintaining our ability to change lives through access to higher education will depend on philanthropic support for scholarships. By helping us to extend the scholarships scheme, you will be providing opportunities for a diverse and vibrant student community. you will be changing lives and enabling them to improve the lives of many others, at a time of uncertainty for all, and when financial limits may prevent many promising students from pursuing higher education.

if you could help support our students, please contact us:

ROBERT MITCHELL SOCIETY

The University is delighted to announce the launch of a new society to recognise the support of those individuals who make an annual charitable gift of £1,000 or more towards student support. The society is named after Robert Mitchell as a great symbol of both those who have benefitted from and those who have supported education.

Having had little schooling as a child, Robert Mitchell was fortunate enough to enter into quintin Hogg’s young Men’s Christian institute, which later developed into the Regent Street Polytechnic. He then went on to dedicate over 50 years of his life to the success of the Polytechnic, becoming the organisation’s first secretary and later its first Director of Education (the Vice-Chancellor of the day).

By joining the Robert Mitchell Society and contributing to the scholarships fund, members will be helping us change lives through providing access to higher education.

FREQUENTLY ASKEd QUESTIONS

1. Can I use the same application form if I apply for two scholarships?

yes, please use the same application form even if you wish to apply for two scholarships. However, please remember that the criteria for many of our scholarships includes financial need. This means you need to think carefully about whether your level of financial need is assistance with tuition fees or whether you truly require a full scholarship (if you are eligible to apply for one). if you apply for tuition fee only scholarships and full scholarships, it will be assumed by the Scholarships Assessment and Awarding Group (SAAG) that you are not truly financially dependent on a full scholarship to take up your place on the course.

2. What should I write in my statement of support?

The statement of support is your opportunity to present yourself to the Scholarships Office and demonstrate why it is that you deserve a scholarship to study at the University of Westminster. in writing your supporting statement, you should seek to describe the qualities that you think make you an outstanding applicant in a highly competitive process.

Most of our scholarships are awarded on one or more of three main criteria:i) academic excellenceii) financial need iii) development potential (for international students only).

your supporting statement should therefore address: • How you meet the criteria• What you expect to gain from the opportunity of studying your course• How you intend to use your experience and knowledge in the future• your professional experience and career aspirations.

UK/EU undergraduate studentsif you are a Uk/EU student applying for an undergraduate scholarship, the supporting statement should make a case for what you can bring to the University in addition to your academic capabilities and what makes you a suitable scholarship candidate. Please note that we are looking to the future, so simply listing past achievements is not sufficient.

International students applying for full scholarships onlyin addition to demonstrating academic excellence and financial need, if you are an international student applying for one of our full scholarships, you also need to evidence ‘development potential’ and explain, specifically and in detail, how you envisage using the knowledge and experience gained from your course in the development of your community/region/nation upon your return to your home country after completing the degree. 3. Who should write my reference and what should it contain?

The reference letter should be written by someone of stature who knows you well in either an academic or professional capacity, ie a teacher, lecturer or employer.

Choose your referee carefully. Think of the letter as an integral part of a package that will present an accurate and complete picture of you, your background and why it is felt that you are eligible for a scholarship.

The reference should, where possible, be written on the headed paper of the school, university, organisation or company and be included with your application in a sealed envelope.

The reference provided as part of your scholarship application should be written specifically in support for your scholarship application, ie you should not use the same reference that you supplied for your admission application.

The referee should provide their views on why your academic abilities, personal qualities and financial circumstances would make you a suitable recipient for a scholarship. it may therefore be useful to discuss your plans with your referee now, before you apply, so that they are more fully able to comment on your plans, goals and capabilities.

4. As an international scholarship applicant, do I have to pay the £4,000 deposit before I know if I have been awarded a scholarship?

The University’s deposits scheme for overseas students means that if you hold an unconditional offer you will be required to make a payment of £4,000 before you are given a student visa support letter, which may be used to apply for your visa for entry to the United kingdom.

As a scholarship applicant, you can wait until you know the outcome of your scholarship application before paying this deposit. it is recommended that you check with the British Embassy how long it takes to process visas during the June to August period. if you are awarded a full scholarship or a full tuition fee scholarship you will not be required to pay this deposit and the admissions offices will be notified of this. if you are awarded a scholarship which awards part of the tuition fee costs (ie £2,000 fee award or 50 per cent fee award) you will still be required to pay this £4,000 deposit.

if you feel that you will come to study at the University regardless of whether or not you are awarded a scholarship, we would encourage you to pay the deposit as soon as possible. if you are later awarded a scholarship that includes full tuition fee costs, you will be entitled to a refund of this deposit.

5. As an international student do I need to provide evidence of my English language competency?

Whether or not you need to provide iELTS/TOEFL results as part of your scholarship application depends on the type of offer you have received from the University of Westminster following your admission application.

if you have been offered an unconditional place on your chosen course then you do not need to submit iELTS/TOEFL results as part of your scholarship application.

if your offer is conditional and one of the conditions relates to demonstrating your English language competency, then we would expect the iELTS/TOEFL results to be included in your scholarship application.

1514

Page 10: SCHOLARSHIPS FOR INTERNATIONAL, UK ANd EU STUdENTS …

1716

if you are required to provide iELTS/TOEFL results with your scholarship application, but your test date is after the deadline date for scholarship applications, you can send the iELTS/TOEFL results to us, separately, at a later date (as long as they are received before 31 July 2014).

6. Who decides whether or not I am awarded a scholarship and how will I find out the result?

All decisions regarding the awarding of scholarships are made by the University’s Scholarships Assessment and Awarding Group. This comprises academic staff from across the University and non-academic staff from many departments including the Scholarships Office, Recruitment, Admissions and Marketing Services, the Student Advice Service and partners. All are very experienced and make the awarding decision based on the criteria for the scholarship and the case you make.

Once decisions have been made, we will let you know as soon as possible by email.

Please note the Scholarships Assessment and Awarding Group will not undertake or participate in any individual correspondence with you, either before or after the decision has been made. The decision of the panel is final, and not open to appeal. Lobbying a member of the panel will make you ineligible for a scholarship.

7. What happens if I am awarded a scholarship?

if you are awarded a scholarship you will be informed by email initially. On confirmation of receipt of the email, you will be sent an official letter from the Scholarships Office giving you the details of your award. All official arrangements will be made with you directly.

you will be required to formally accept the scholarship and its conditions by signing the contract that is sent with your awarding letter.

During and after your period of study you may be asked to participate in promotional activities for the University. This may include receptions and social events, testimonial or publicity articles or even assisting with activities in your home country.

During each year as a scholarship student, you will also be expected to participate in our volunteering scheme (up to a maximum of 40 hours of voluntary work per year). Students awarded joint scholarships with international Students House are expected to do ten hours per month voluntary work there.

The continuation of all scholarships is based on satisfactory academic performance, the exact nature of which will be described in your award letter and Terms of Agreement.

if you are a Uk/EU undergraduate student, we require all modules to be passed and an average of 60 per cent overall to be achieved.

if you are a postgraduate student you may be required by the Scholarships Office to submit a report from your tutor or supervisor. This report may be requested after each year if you are a PhD student, or after Semester One if you are a Masters student.

8. What do I do if I decide to defer my admission or change my course after I have been awarded the scholarship?

The scholarship must be used for the academic course and year for which it was applied. in the event of awardees deferring the year of entry the scholarship is considered cancelled and the deferring student must re-apply.

Changes of course may in some circumstances be considered.

9. What happens if my scholarship application is rejected?

you will be informed of your rejection as soon as possible by email. in the event of you receiving a rejection email, you cannot reapply for a Westminster scholarship for a period of two calendar years. For example, if you are unsuccessful with an application for September 2014, the next time you can apply is for a September 2016 scholarship. if you still want to attend the course, you will have to pay the £4,000 fee deposit to get your Tier 4 visa.

10. Which countries are considered under the region specific scholarships? Or the ‘developing’ country title?

Please refer to the appendices at the back of this brochure for the countries included under specific regions.

11. Where can I find information about PhD scholarships/studentships?

The only PhD/research scholarship offered and administered via the University’s Scholarships Office is the Cavendish Research PhD Scholarship for research related to Science and Technology. All other PhD/research scholarships/studentships are managed by the University’s Research Office. For information visit westminster.ac.uk/courses/research-degrees/research-studentships. if you have any questions regarding funding opportunities for PhD study in subjects other than Science and Technology, please contact the University Research Office at [email protected].

12. Where can I find my University of Westminster reference number?

your eight digit reference number can be found at the top of your admissions offer letter or email correspondence from the University and must be included on your scholarship application. We will not consider applications that do not include this number. if you are applying for an undergraduate degree, you can also use your UCAS application number found on all UCAS correspondence.

if you require any further information or have any more questions please contact the Scholarships Office at [email protected]

13. What is meant by a ‘closed’ scholarship?

Closed scholarships are awarded to candidates nominated by the relevant partner organisation. We do not accept direct applications for these scholarships. if you have any questions, please contact the partner organisation directly.

“After ten years of experience as a journalist in Brazil, i felt it was time to enhance my knowledge with a Master’s degree. Unfortunately, most Brazilian universities are not analysing the innovations in media markets. The scholarship has given me the opportunity to gain the knowledge i was seeking.

At the University of Westminster i had access to the extensive experience of the academic staff as well as lectures from external speakers.

Moreover my studies at Westminster permitted me to extend my learning experience beyond the academic setting by providing a global classroom which gave me the opportunity to compare the practice of the media production in different countries and continents.

After graduation, i returned to Rio de Janeiro. i am sure that my experiences at University of Westminster were essential not only to make me a better professional but also to improve the media practice in my home country.”

The Scholarships Office offers two main schemes for Uk/EU undergraduate students: the National Scholarship Programme and the Westminster Undergraduate Scheme. While you are allowed to make an application for both scholarships, no applicants will be awarded more than one scholarship through our scholarships programme. To be eligible to apply for our scholarships, you must first have been offered either a conditional or unconditional place on an undergraduate course at the University of Westminster. Most offers of scholarships will be made conditional on students achieving required grades, which is usually a higher standard than the entry requirements for the undergraduate course.

Please note that expectations of academic excellence and creativity may vary slightly from course to course, depending on course entry standards. This is to ensure that scholarships are fairly spread across the University’s courses and not clustered in high entry qualification areas.

For UK/EU undergraduate scholarships The University has an online application process that should be available to use from December 2013 onwards. However, please note that decisions on these applications will not be made until after the deadline date in April. For more information on the online application process, please visit our website at westminster.ac.uk/scholarships

nAtIOnAL SCHOLARSHIPSWith the introduction of higher tuition fees in September 2012, the government set up the National Scholarship Programme. Scholarships offered under this scheme are only available to Uk or EU students with a household income of less than £25,000 per annum. National Scholarships are limited in number, and applicants are chosen based on academic potential. Please note the National Scholarships are not open to students studying on the part-time degree programmes.

AMOUNT: A total of £6,000 over a three-year undergraduate course (£3,000 awarded in year one and an additional £3,000 awarded between years two and three). if you are on a four year degree course, the additional £3,000 is paid over years two and four. £1,000 of the National Scholarship is available as a cash award in your final year. The balance of £5,000 can be put towards tuition fees or University accommodation.

ELIGIBILITY: you must have Westminster as your firm choice on UCAS and hold an offer for a full-time undergraduate degree (conditional or unconditional) at the University. The scholarship will be renewed each year subject to satisfactory academic performance and confirmation of household income.

CRITERIA: Academic excellence and/or creative potential and financial need.

“The Helena kennedy Foundation exists to overcome social injustice

by providing financial bursaries, mentoring and support to disadvantaged students from the further and adult education sectors, enabling them to complete their studies in higher education and move on successfully into employment.

The Foundation does this by taking social action to increase the number and enhance the value of bursaries awarded each year. it encourages social mobility by increasing the range and types of student support available,

particularly for talented students from non-traditional backgrounds.

We couldn’t do this without the support of University of Westminster who have been supporting us for a number of years and generously offered several scholarships in 2013. We hope we can carry on offering more bursaries to students from the University who very much need the support.”

“The generous scholarship programme at the University of Westminster is not only a life-line for me but it has also allowed me to fulfil a dream that few students have given due consideration to - avoiding being hugely in debt after my studies. in giving me the added push to go above and beyond the minimum pass mark in my studies i have gladly embraced the challenge of giving 100% in every exam, presentation, essay and project. After all, if i managed to be successful in acquiring this scholarship despite the fierce competition, then i have enough potential to strive for nothing less than the best. The fact that there is the inherent requirement to volunteer also provides a rather intuitive dimension to the scholarship since it implicitly recognises that experience in the job market is just as valuable as attaining a degree. i hope that this programme will continue to grow from strength to strength each year and i look forward to giving back to this University as much as it has given to me.”

We cannot consider your application for a scholarship if you have not already made an application for admission and been successfully offered a place on a course.

For information on how to apply for a place on one of our courses, please visit our website: westminster.ac.uk/courses/undergraduate/how-to-apply (undergraduate) westminster.ac.uk/courses/postgraduate/how-to-apply (postgraduate)

if you are an existing student, unfortunately, at present, you are not currently eligible to apply for a scholarship as all scholarships are awarded BEFORE a course commences.

To apply for a scholarship you will need to complete the relevant scholarship application form.

For Uk/EU undergraduate scholarships The University has an online application process that should be available for use from December 2013 onwards. Shortlisting will be done as applications arrive but final decisions on the allocation of awards will be taken after the deadline. For more information on the online application process, please visit our website at westminster.ac.uk/scholarships

For international students and all postgraduate students you will need to download the relevant application form (international Undergraduate or Postgraduate) from our website here: westminster.ac.uk/scholarships

Please note that for international undergraduate and all postgraduate students we do not currently have an online application facility and DO NOT ACCEPT APPLICATIONS VIA EMAIL. international students and postgraduate students will need to send their applications By POST to the following address:

Scholarships Office1st Floor, Cavendish House101 New Cavendish StreetLondon W1W 6XHUnited kingdom

Please ensure that you check any deadline dates for individual scholarships in the brochure or on our website - westminster.ac.uk/scholarships

Once we have received your application, we will acknowledge receipt by email. in cases where an application is received very close to the deadline, you may not get an email of acknowledgement. Applications may be reviewed as they arrive but final decisions on the allocation of awards will be communicated to students after the deadline.

The scholarships described within this brochure are for studying at the University of Westminster only and are normally for one year only (renewable subject to academic performance in case of undergraduate and MPhil/PhD scholarships). Scholarships awarded are for the student only and not families. Under no circumstances can students bring family members. Scholarships are awarded by the University’s Scholarships Assessment and Awarding Group and their decision is final. No correspondence will be entered into as to the reasons for their decision. No appeal is allowed, as once scholarships are awarded, all funds have been committed. No monies are paid to students except where a living allowance is payable. Living allowances are paid directly to the service provider. Tuition fee costs will be paid directly to the Finance Office by the Scholarships Office on behalf of the student. Accommodation costs will also either be waived or paid by the Scholarships Office directly. Where accommodation is provided, it will normally be at the University’s halls of residences or international Students House. Where you will be accommodated is at the University’s discretion and this may include sharing with an assigned roommate. The University and its partners reserve the right to withdraw, terminate or suspend any scholarship on disciplinary grounds or in case of academic failure. This includes failing to meet the satisfactory academic progress condition of scholarship which, unless specified, means, at minimum, successfully passing all modules.

Scholars may be requested to assist the University with its marketing and publicity activities as appropriate.

Acceptance of a scholarship implies consent under the Data Protection Act for the University to keep in contact with the student and for the scholar’s name to be published in relevant publicity materials. Lobbying of any members of the Scholarships Assessment and Awarding Group will disqualify applicants from receiving any scholarship. The University reserves the right to withdraw or amend a scholarship without prior notification. Scholarships are offered subject to funding and availability. All scholarships are subject to verification of academic qualifications and satisfactory academic progress. Scholarships are awarded for a specific course and start date. Students may not defer the scholarship.

Funds for scholarships are for the scholar’s use only and may not be repatriated under any circumstances. Students attempting to do so will have their scholarship revoked and will be required to return to their home country.
