Scholarships

St Andrew’s believes that excellence should be recognised and therefore scholarships are awarded tochildren who show outstanding potential either academically or in art, drama, music or sport. Theseawards are not means-tested. For those children who are awarded a scholarship at the school, St Andrew’s believes that the major contribution it can make to a scholar is the development of theirspecialism through a tailored provision and support programme throughout their time at the school.Scholarships are offered to exceptionally gifted and talented pupils and the scholarships awarded are apublic recognition of this excellence. They are prestigious awards made as a result of strictly moderatedopen competition and assessment and they carry with them privilege and responsibility.

Assessments are open to both external candidates and internal candidates (ie. pupils who currentlyattend St Andrew’s). External applicants must complete a registration form (downloadable from theAdmissions section of the school website) and pay a £75 registration fee.

The number and size of scholarships is at the discretion of the Headmaster and merit shown bycandidates.

Scholarship awards for successful candidates will take effect from September 2018. Candidates will takepart in the assessments in the Spring Term before the year of entry. The majority of the scholarshipsawarded will be between 5 and 20 percent, although in very exceptional circumstances, a moresubstantial award may be given. Where parental financial circumstances justify it, the fee reductioncomponent of scholarships may be enhanced by means-tested bursaries (see Bursaries section below). The funds available for scholarships and bursaries are carefully controlled by the Governors.

Candidates will be judged on their merits and St Andrew’s reserves the right not to award anyscholarships if there are no candidates of sufficient merit.

Conditions of Scholarships

Scholars are expected to set themselves high standards in the way they conduct themselves both in andaround the school. The example they set will make them natural leaders among their peer group and wehope that they will both enjoy and make the most of the responsibility.

It is generally expected that all scholarships will be held for the duration of the candidate’s career at St Andrew’s. However, all scholarships are reviewed annually. St Andrew’s reserves the right to withdrawscholarships if, in the opinion of the Headmaster and after careful monitoring procedures, the pupil isperforming significantly below expectations. The amount of any award is regarded as a confidential matterbetween the parents and the Headmaster. Parents are expected to respect this confidentiality and anybreach of this understanding is likely to lead to the withdrawal of the award.

Scholarships are not transferable to Eastbourne College or any other senior school. Separateassessments take place in Year 8 for entry to senior schools in Year 9. For more information onscholarships to senior schools, please contact the Deputy Head, Academic.

Within this booklet there is further information regarding each of the five types of scholarships andapplication forms. Parents of external and internal candidates should complete the relevant applicationform and should also send a confidential reference form for completion to the Head or teacher of theirchild’s current school.

Bursaries

It is important to distinguish between bursaries and scholarships as there is often confusion. Bursaries

are separate from scholarships. Bursaries are offered in recognition of financial need and, in some cases, can be added to scholarship award amounts.

All bursaries are means-tested according to the guidelines laid down by the Independent SchoolBursars’ Association and parents are asked to complete a comprehensive financial circumstances formwhich is available from the Registrar upon request. General enquiries should be made to the Registrar, on 01323 733203 or email [email protected], and specific questions regarding bursariesshould be made to the Finance Bursar. The deadline for bursary applications is Friday 12 January 2018.

Frequently asked questions...

Does my child need to be registered to apply for any of the scholarships?Yes. Your child must be registered with St Andrew's Prep and the £75 registration fee received beforethe scholarship application closing date of Friday 12 January 2018. However, only when the deposit of£750 is paid is a child committed to the school and their place confirmed. Deposits are required ninemonths before a child enters the school or just prior to a child joining if submitting a late registration.

What is a scholarship? A scholarship is the recognition of excellence and academic potential, or potential in another field suchas art, drama, music or sport, following assessment by St Andrew’s. Scholars receive a reduction onschool fees and benefit from the school’s commitment to excellence in all areas of school life. Theassessments are open to both external and internal candidates in certain age groups.

Which scholarship should my son or daughter apply for? Some parents of external candidates take advice from their child’s current school, art, music or dramateacher or sports coach. However, the Headmaster is happy to give general advice on this. Parents ofexternal candidates can arrange either an individual appointment to visit the school or may attend anOpen Event. Internal candidates should speak to the child’s Form Teacher/Tutor, relevant staff member orthe Headmaster. Candidates may apply for more than one discipline in the following fields: academic, art, drama, music or sport with a maximum of three disciplines in total.

What is the difference between a scholarship and a bursary? Both may give financial assistance but are different in their assessment.

Scholarships are given to pupils who have demonstrated excellence and ability in their chosen disciplineregardless of their financial circumstances and are not means-tested.

Bursaries can be given in recognition of financial need and can be applied for by the family of anyprospective pupil regardless of ability. The amount of a bursary award is treated on an individual basisand the maximum amount offered is unlikely to exceed 50 percent. If a joint scholarship and bursary isawarded then the combined amount of these awards is still unlikely to exceed 50 percent

Bursaries are means-tested, so parents are asked to complete a comprehensive financial circumstancesform which is then assessed by the School’s Finance Bursar.

How much can scholarships be worth? The majority of the scholarships will be between 5 and 20 percent of school fees although, in reallyexceptional circumstances, a higher award may be given. However, please bear in mind that means-testedbursaries can add to the total amount of financial assistance but is unlikely to exceed 50 percent in total.

How many scholarships are awarded each year? There is no fixed number of scholarships given in any discipline each year.

How will my child’s progress be monitored? There is a tailored enrichment programme of support in place which is carefully monitored by the Headof Department or Director of Studies. Records of Achievement are kept and teachers will discuss with ascholar their progress and targets at the beginning and end of each term.

If my child’s main sport is not one of the assessed sports, will this be taken intoconsideration?Yes, candidates are asked to supply written evidence of non-assessed sports in the form of a referencefrom the coach and evidence of achievements.
