    IntroductionTheOfcial ASE Study Guide for the School Bus Testsisintendedtohelptechni-

    ciansstudyfortheASEcerticationtests.Thespecicmaterialabouteachtest,

    includedinthebookletisausefultoolforreviewingthetechnicalknowledgethatiscoveredintheSchool Bus tests.Afterperformingathoroughreview,itshould

    How Do I Become Certifed?TherearecurrentlyseventestsintheSchoolBusTechniciancerticationseries.

    Ifyoupassoneormoretests,andhaveatleasttwoyearsofhands-onworking

    experienceinschoolbusrepair,thenyouwillbecomecertiedasanASESchool

    BusTechnician.(Appropriatevocationaltrainingmaybesubstitutedforupto

    oneyearofworkexperience.)

    IfyoupasstestsS1throughS6,andmeettheexperiencerequirement,you

    willearnthecerticateofMasterSchoolBusTechnician.

    IfyouarecurrentlycertiedinDieselEngines(A9,H2,S2,orT2)

    andElectrical/ElectronicSystems(A6,H6,S6,orT6),youareeligibletotake

    theL2ElectronicDieselEngineDiagnosisSpecialisttest.

    Ifyoufailatest,youmaytakeitagainduringanyscheduledtestadmin-

    istrationinwhichitisoffered.Andremember,youaretheonlyonewhowill

    receiveyourtestsscores;resultswillnotbegivenoverthephonenorwilltheybe

    Who Writes the Questions?Thequestions,writtenbyserviceindustryexpertsfamiliarwithallaspectsof

    schoolbusrepair,areentirelyjob-related.Theyaredesignedtotestknowledge

    oftheskillsthatyouneedinservicingschoolbuses;theoreticalknowledgeisnot

    covered.

    EachquestionhasitsrootsinanASEitem-writingworkshopwhereservicerepresentativesfromschoolbusmanufacturers,aftermarketpartsand

    equipmentmanufacturers,workingtechniciansandtechnicaleducatorsmeetin

    aworkshopsettingtoshareideasandtranslatethemintotestquestions.Each

    testquestionwrittenbytheseexpertsmustsurvivereviewbyallmembersofthe

    group.Thequestionsarewrittentodealwithpracticalproblemsofdiagnosisand

    repairexperiencedbytechniciansintheirday-to-daywork.

    Fromthere,allquestionsarepre-testedandquality-checkedonanational

    sampleoftechnicians.ThosequestionsthatmeetASEstandardsofqualityandaccuracyareincludedinthescoredsectionsofthetests;therejectsaresent

    ThefollowingmaterialisdesignedtohelptechnicianspreparefortheASE

    certicationtests.

    EachsectionbeginswiththeTestSpecications,whichwilllistthemain

    categoriescoveredonthatparticulartestandthenumberoftestquestionsand

    percentageofthetestdevotedtoeachtopic.

    TheTaskListdescribestheworkactivitiesatechnicianshouldbeableto

    performineachtechnicalareacoveredonthattest.Thislistwasdevelopedby

    workingtechniciansandtechnicalexpertsfromacrossthecountryandwillpro-

    videavaluablechecklistofwhattostudyforthetest. Thesetaskdescriptionsofferdetailedinformationtotechnicianspreparing

    forthetestandtopersonswhomaybeinstructingtechnicians.Thetasklistsmay

    alsoserveasguidelinesforquestionwriters,reviewers,andtestassemblers.

    Itshouldalsobenotedthatthenumberofquestionsineachcontentareamay

    notequalthenumberoftaskslisted.Someofthetasksarecomplexandbroad

    inscopeandmaybecoveredbyseveralquestions.Othertasksaresimpleand

    narrowinscopeandonequestionmaycoverseveraltasks.Themainobjective
