School Direct Information Pack 2021/22
What is the Ealing Teaching School Alliance? Ealing Teaching School Alliance (ETSA) is an exciting and innovative collaboration striving to provide
teaching excellence in the London Borough of Ealing. The Alliance comprises of 13 secondary schools and is
in partnership with Hillingdon SCITT, St Mary’s University and Goldsmiths, university of London.
ETSA has a fantastic reputation for its well-established training programmes and its excellent track-record of
induction. ETSA’s commitment to ensuring that all trainees, regardless of subject or route, are able to
benefit from the experience and expertise of the very best practitioners makes it an excellent place to train
and procure employment once qualified. For the past five years, the vast majority of ETSA trainees have
secured their first qualified teacher role within the Alliance upon completion of their training year.
Why train with us?
All schools in ETSA are highly supportive and inspirational environments where you will develop the
necessary skills and acquire a true appreciation of the practice essential for outstanding teaching and
learning. You will learn your craft in a safe environment which allows you to experiment with teaching
styles, strategies and ideas.
Your training will be delivered by expert teachers within the school. You will participate in weekly
professional development sessions and you will also attend Alliance-wide “Golden Day” training events
along with fellow ETSA trainees. Your school-led training will be complemented by attendance at the
Hillingdon SCITT, St Mary’s University or Goldsmiths, university of London.
You will be assigned an experienced mentor from within your subject area at your main placement school
who will support you in your development over the course of what will be a challenging and rewarding
year. All mentors are excellent teachers who are well-trained in mentoring, coaching, lesson observations
and feedback skills. You will also work closely with a member of the Senior Leadership team who will
oversee a great deal of your training and will provide an invaluable perspective on your role as a teacher
and the wider issues of education leadership.
As well as your main training placement, you will complete a 7-12 week placement in a contrasting
context within ETSA; this will afford you the opportunity to experience working with different students,
within different structures and with a wider range of colleagues.

Salaried School Direct
School Direct is a school-led teacher training option that offers practical, hands-on training and education.
This course offers a brilliant option if you want to train and learn ‘on the job’, and you shouldn’t worry
about being thrown in at the deep end. You’ll be part of a team from the very start, receiving intensive
support from experienced teachers and mentors. That means you won’t be teaching classes unsupported
until the school thinks you’re ready. School-led courses have very high rates of employment and trainee
satisfaction.
About the School Direct programme
Unsalaried School Direct
This route is aimed at high quality career changers. You
will be employed by your main placement school and paid
a salary up to £25,000 depending on the subject you will
teach. At the end of the one year training programme,
you will gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). You should
be a degree holder, with at least a 2:2 in a relevant
subject. You must have 3 years’ work experience,
although less experience may be considered for shortage
subjects such as Physics, Maths, Chemistry, Modern
Foreign Languages and Computing.
You do not have to be supernumerary and you can have
up to 80% of a teaching timetable. You will attend the
Hillingdon SCITT, St Mary’s University or Goldsmiths (as
applicable) for up to 15 days of training. The majority of
your training will be delivered by the school.
This route is aimed at recent graduates.
Unsalaried School Direct trainees work
towards a Postgraduate Certificate of
Education (PGCE) during the training year,
which also results in Qualified Teacher
Status (QTS). You must have at least a 2:2
class degree in a relevant subject. You will
be eligible for student finance to cover the
cost of your PGCE fees, as well as a
training bursary (dependent on degree
classification).
You will be supernumerary and you can
have up to 50% of a teaching timetable.

Finance Information for Unsalaried School Direct Scholarships
Scholarships of up to £30,000 are available in maths, physics, chemistry and computing for trainees who

quality graduates with a 2:1 or first-class degree, who are passionate about their subject and have the
potential to be inspirational teachers.
Scholarships are awarded by professional bodies for these subjects, and scholars will be selected through
an additional application and assessment process. Each scholarship also comes with a package of non-
financial benefits, such as early career support and membership of the appropriate professional body. To
apply for a scholarship and for further information, you should visit the appropriate subject association
website:
Physics – delivered by the Institute of Physics (IOP)
Chemistry – delivered by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC)
Maths – delivered by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA)
Computing – delivered by the BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT
The scholarship will be instead of the standard bursary, but trainees who are not awarded the
scholarship will still be eligible for the standard bursaries.
Training bursaries
To encourage the best graduates to enter the profession, financial incentives are offered to trainees
intending to train to teach the subjects in the table below. You do not need to apply for a bursary – if you

until your referees have
provided your reference.
How long does the training programme last?
The next cohort of ETSA School Direct trainees will begin their training in September 2021 and finish in
summer 2022.
I haven’t got a degree. Can I still apply?
No, all candidates must hold a UK degree (or equivalent). Please note if you are currently studying
towards an undergraduate degree, you must have completed the course prior to commence a School
Direct training programme.
I live outside of the UK. Can I still apply?
All applicants must have the right to work in the UK to be eligible for School Direct at ETSA. Some schools
may be willing to sponsor applicants who are looking at applying for the salaried route in Physics, Maths
or Computer Science.
Do I need to have experience of working in a UK school?
Experience of working in a school is not a mandatory requirement for joining the School Direct
Programme. However, school experience is desirable, especially for a salaried route. Before you apply for
your training, we recommend you gain as much experience in the classroom as possible in order to
strengthen your application and prepare yourself for potential interviews. To find out more about getting
school experience, please visit https://schoolexperience.education.gov.uk/
What qualification will I receive at the end of the training programme?
Trainees on the non-salaried route will gain a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and Qualified
Teacher Status (QTS) upon successful completion of the training year. Trainees on the salaried route will
gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
Can I apply by submitting a CV and covering letter directly to the School?
No, all applications must be submitted via UCAS. To find a programme and to apply, please visit:
https://www.ucas.com/ucas/teacher-training
I’m having issues submitting my application via UCAS.
Unfortunately we are unable to help with technical issues with UCAS. You can find plenty of help at
https://www.ucas.com/ucas/teacher-training
I have submitted my application and I haven’t heard back from you.
After you have applied, you will receive a welcome email from UCAS within 48 hours. We aim to respond
to applicants within 25 working days of receiving your application. If we would like to invite you to an
interview, it is likely that it will take place within these 25 working days.
Will I secure a teacher position with you after my training?
We aim for 100% of our School Direct trainees to secure permanent employment with us upon successful
completion of the training year. At ETSA, we see the School Direct training programme as the beginning
of your teaching career with us, not just a one year training programme. For the past four years, the vast
majority of our trainees have secured permanent employment within their main placement school, or
partner school within the Alliance.
