We entered 3 mixed teams and one girlsteam. It was fantastic to see the students having so much fun and more importantly having a go even if they had never played cricket before. One of our boysteam made the final but unfortunately lost. Our girlsteam missed out on playing the finals by a countback on runs. As a school we were the winners of the nutbushdance off!!! Congratulations to all the students involved, our pre-service teachers and education support staff for each working with a team and Mr Whitear for organising such a great day. Remembrance Day On Thursday 8th November, twelve of our Year 5/6 students worked with Josie Reasons, Marg Armstrong and Marg Robinson to create wreaths for Remembrance Day. All materials were kindly donated by Creswick Gardening Club. These wreaths were used on Sunday at The Kingston Avenue of Honour and Armistice Centenary. We were proudly represented by two of our students Brodie Tallent and Jorja Tallent who laid a wreath on behalf of our school community.

Art Therapy

This term 12 senior students have been participating in an Art Therapy program each Monday. The program runs for a total of 8 weeks. Art therapy utlizies art-based activities, play and group interactions to encourage students to express themselves, learn to self regulate and develop creativity. The students have thoroughly been enjoying the program. Here are Luke’s thoughts of the program. The Art Program has been held over the past few weeks with Monica, Robbie and Teagan on a Monday morning. We have had a small group in the artroom usually grouped in half. We created habitats for animals out of boxes, played with clay and then constructed an island for the animals. We talked about the animals and their needs which I liked. I loved the program – it was fun and a good idea and I hope that others get the opportunity to be part of it. I also liked how there was a small number in the group. Luke 5/6 H

New Things

Junior unit parents may have noticed that the gallery has had a revamp. We are now using this space as a learning area, placing new furniture in there and getting signage put up. We would like to thank all parents that have made a voluntary contribution payment this year. This improvement was funded by your generosity. The students were excited this week to have some new courtyard games. They now have a giant connect 4 and Jenga Tumble Tower available to play with. It has been fabulous to watch the Senior and Junior Students working together when using the games. We would like to thank our Parents’ Club for funding these games, the students and school community really appreciate it.

Reminders

Thank you to the Senior Student parents that have returned notification that they will be attending our anti-bullying parent session on Wednesday 28th November 6pm-7.30pm. If you are interested in coming the information is attached to this weeks newsletter. It would be great if we could get as many parents to attend as possible. If you are attending please notify by returning the note or calling the office to assist us with catering.

LITERACY AND NUMERACY TIPS TO HELP YOUR CHILD EVERY DAY

A GUIDE FOR PARENTS OF CHILDREN AGED 0 - 12YRS

Year 3 to Year 6

HELPING YOUR CHILD TO READ

Here are some tips to encourage reading:

It is recommended that you continue to read together in the later primary years, even if your child is reading independently.

Take your child to the local library often so they can choose, borrow and renew books. Taking your child to the library at the beginning of school holidays encourages weeks of independent reading.

Encourage your child to borrow from their school library as well.

If your child likes an author, find another book or a series of books by the same author.

Encourage your child to read about their favourite author or illustrator at their website.

Introduce your child to read different genres such as fantasy, science-fiction, action and adventure.

Introduce your child to reading different types of texts such as poems, music lyrics and short plays.

Encourage your child to read non-fiction. The newspaper or an online encyclopaedia might be a good start, but your child might also be interested in history books or autobiographies of their favourite sportsperson or celebrity.

Encourage your child to use a dictionary to look up words they might not understand.

Allow your child to play age appropriate video games that require reading.

Encourage your child to join the Victorian Premiers’ Reading challenge which runs each year from March to September. Participating schools will register your child - otherwise you can register your child at http://www.education.vic.gov.au/about/events/prc

Book Chat

Book chat is an important strategy to help your child to reflect more deeply on the content and meaning of their favourite books. In the previous section, Birth to Year 2, Literacy, book chat questions related mainly to recalling information on a plot and character. These questions are still very important to ask when your child is in primary school. As your child moves through primary school, add more questions when discussing the book you are reading together or when discussing the book your child is reading independently.

Some further questions might include:

Does the main character change in the story? How does the character change?

If you could change the ending of the book, what would it be?

What do you think is the story’s main message?

What is your opinion about the story’s main message?

Can you relate the story or message to another event or issue?

How could other people see it differently?
