Education must not simply teach work - it must teach Life. - W.E.B. Du Bois

ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS We will be continuing our study of the novel To Kill a Mockingbird. Students will focus on the theme of taking a stand and what it means to stand up for someone who is unable to do so for himself or herself. In addition, students will be working intently on practicing the skills necessary to be successful on the upcoming ELA exam. Students will practice multiple choice as well as constructed response questions.

MATHEMATICS MIT will continue their geometry unit. We will be completing

transformations by the end of the first week of February. By Mid- Winter Recess, we will have completed angle relationships. Berkeley, Middlebury, and Williams will continue their unit on solving equations. We have just finished solving equations with variables on both sides containing rational numbers. We will start to solve systems of equations using various methods such as graphs, substitution, and elimination.

SCIENCE For the month of February we will be exploring "Humans’ Negative Impact

on The Environment" and since we have begun our preparation work for the upcoming statewide exam, we will be conducting an intensive review and working on test-taking skills.

SOCIAL STUDIES

During the month of February, students in social studies will continue to engage in lessons that will build their skills in preparation for the ELA state exam that is quickly approaching. More specifically, we will work on building and practicing close reading skills and strategies that prepare our students to be all-stars with multiple choice questions. Although there is great emphasis placed on ELA it is important to note that we are not neglecting social studies content. Students will engage in social studies content while continuing to practice and understand how ELA skills are critical for social studies. Furthermore, February is Black History Month and students will be assigned a creative but comprehensive social studies Black History research project that will be due and presented at the end of the month. As we move into the second month of 2017, we are excited to continue to work with your child as we continue our work in preparing them for “…excellence in high school, college, and life.”
