PRINCIPAL’S NEWS NAPLAN information for the families of grade 3 and 5 students
The 2019 NAPLAN results have been released and we are waiting for them to arrive
at Manorvale. As soon as the individual student NAPLAN reports are ready to be
picked up, we will let you know.
Spelling Bee
Last Thursday, Shravan and Samuel represented our school at the Wyndham Librar-
ies Spelling Bee. Both students performed well,
competing against students from 17 other schools in Wyndham. Shravan had a
challenging word in round 5 and did his best to try to spell the word abbreviation.
Congratulations to Shravan on a great effort.
Samuel came second in the year 5-6 group and had an extremely difficult word at the
very end. He was also competing against last year, year’s 5-6 spelling champion and
did a fantastic job to win second place. Congratulations to Samuel who was also a
previous first prize winner when he competed in the year 3-4 age group several years
ago. It was very clear that both boys had been putting in a lot of effort to learn how
to spell new words. Congratulations to both boys.
District Athletics
Last week, 45 students represented our school at the District Athletics under very
cold and windy conditions. The students were extremely well behaved and waited
patiently for their events and encouraged and cheered on their team mates.
Our school was placed 8th in the competition. Congratulations to all the participants.
A number of students performed extremely well and will be advancing to the division
finals on September 12th 2019. The following students will be representing our school
in these events.

in the yard again. Hats are required to be worn during recess and lunch times as well
as during outdoor learning activities, on excursions and at sporting events. Students

Staffing
Lia Madafferi and Carole Hall
Lia Madaferri has resigned from her Education Support position to undertake a new employment opportunity. We
would like to thank Lia for her contribution to our school since 2015, particularly the work she has undertaken
with the students to help improve their learning outcomes. We wish her all the best with her future
endeavours.
Carole Hall has accepted a position at another school which will translate to an
ongoing position. We would like to acknowledge the work Carole has undertaken at our school particularly with
the Robotics Team, Year 6-7 Transition and the Junior School Council. Ms Mercedes McGinnis is currently work-
ing with the class until the end of term 3 while we work through the recruitment process of finding a
permanent teacher.
Grade Placements 2020
Teachers spend considerable time making up grades for next year. Every effort is made to create a class which is
compatible and equitable based on the professional judgement and knowledge of the staff.
Consideration is given to
Social and emotional needs
Academic needs
Family and neighbourhood relationships
Parents who have concerns about the placement of their child should record these in writing and
address them to the Principal. In fairness to all, requests for particular teachers, the gender and/or experience
of the teacher will be considered last and may not be met. Parents who wish to discuss these issues should make
an appointment to see the Principal and/or Assistant Principal.
Students NOT Returning in 2020
Parents of students from Prep -5 who will not be returning to Manorvale next year are asked to inform the school
in writing. Please include the intended school placement for next year.
Preps 2020
Families who are intending to enrol a Prep student for next year should complete enrolment forms as soon as
possible and return them to the office.
Message from Camp Australia re a Missing iPad
Dear Parents,
An iPad belonging to one of the children was misplaced on Monday, 19th August 2019. It’s possible this iPad has
fallen from the top of the child’s bag as it was being put away and fallen into another. If you could please take a
look to see if perhaps this iPad has accidentally found its way to your home, that would be wonderful. Should you
find it, please either bring it along to the service or drop it into the school office and tell them it belongs to one of
the children at OSHC.
Thank you so much,
Camp Australia – Manorvale Team

Primary Schools’ Parliamentary Convention
On Tuesday 6th August, we represented Manorvale at the 2019
Primary Schools’ Parliamentary Convention. It was held in the
Legislative Assembly of Parliament House, Victoria. We sat in the green leather seats that the politicians
sit in. There was a Welcome to Country and then speeches about history and democracy. Some schools
were chosen to deliver their opinion in a two minute speech about the topic “Should athletes and celebri-
ties use their popularity to
influence social and political issues?”.
We had morning tea in the Queen’s Hall and then students were
divided into smaller groups called committee groups. We were in the Sea Turtles group. We discussed
the topic and then had to decide if we agreed or disagreed. Our group chose two people to present a
speech back to everyone. When all groups had presented, we had a ‘Soapbox’, where everybody who
hadn’t had a chance could express their opinion. Olivia was chosen by the Speaker to present.
Finally we all voted and the ‘for’ side won. Overall it was a very fun and enjoyable day. We would highly
recommend it to others.

AN ARTS FESTIVAL YARN BOMBING PROJECT
Our Arts Festival is fast approaching. Please put Wednesday, 23rd October 2019 in your diaries for the
‘Big Evening Community Event’ starting at 5:00pm with a picnic and performances. One of the
events in the Arts Festival is a ‘Yarn Bombing textile project’ in the Friendship Orchard garden.
During the Festival, the community will be invited to weave patterns and designs into the fence with
colourful yarn.
If you like to knit or crochet, and would like to make some colourful small flowers, circles, squares or
shapes for our project, please drop them into the art room or school office. We will be sewing these
woollen flowers and shapes onto the cyclone fence. If you have any questions, please visit me in the art
room to discuss the project further.
If you have any wool donations for our Yarn Bombing project, please drop them into the art room or
the office.
Thanks
