Principal’s Report Pamela Streete Dear Parents/carers, NAPLAN Year 3 and Year 5 results have been sent home with the children. We congratulate all the children on their effort and achievement and sincerely thank the teachers for their hard work and dedication in ensuring the children are well prepared. We know that the quality of the teacher makes the biggest impact on student learning. John Hattie’s research indicates that teachers who have high expectations and collective efficacy are the two biggest influences on student achievement. Therefore, we sincerely thank the teacher at Glenroy West for their hard work, their constant striving to challenge students and their belief that all children can learn and improve. These qualities are making a real difference to the learning at Glenroy West Primary School.

Authors Day Well done to all students and teachers on an excellent Authors’ Day at Glenroy West Primary School. The excellent pieces of writing and books created were outstanding . l hope many parents and friends came along to view your child’s work and see many others work. Thank you to all parents and grandparents who attended our Authors’ Day. RESPECT Results are in from our student attitudes to school survey. Students strongly agree that we demonstrate: High Expectations 89%, Sense of Inclusion 92%. Respect for teachers 88% and Respect for Peers 85%. Respect is one of our core beliefs. It is a PYP Attitude. We strive to encourage everyone to respect themselves, others and the world around them. It is important that as adults we model respect. We can show respect by parking carefully around the school (not parking in disabled zones, over driveways or in the drop off, pick up zone). We demonstrate respect in the way we speak to others, especially in times of conflict. Please think about the example you set your children in the respectful ways you treat yourself, your children, teachers and school members and the ways your respect our environment. All of us need to set a good example to our children and when we see our children showing respect please acknowledge and praise them. BED WETTING- www.bedwettinginstitute.com.au According to the Royal Children’s Hospital there are at least 37,000 children in Victoria between the ages of 3 and 15 who wet the bed regularly. Bed wetting can cause anxiety around the time of school camps. At the bedwetting institute we have designed an effective program that addresses the causes of bedwetting and offers a practical and achievable method of curing the problem. Bedwetting Institute A DVD based program to cure bedwetting with Dr Mark Condon, and Physiotherapist Margaret O’Donovan has been developed. It outlines a successful four step program for parents to implement at home with their children. Attendance Attendance can, and does, make a substantial difference to the learning of every child. While missing a day or two might seem insignificant at the time, they soon add up and impact on student connectedness to their peers (friend ships and working groups), the classroom and school. Late arrivals also play a major role in student morale as well as academic success. Having to walk in late, after class has begun, is not only hard on the child but disturbs the learning of other children who are on task. The roll is marked promptly each day with children who are not present marked late after this time. We are currently working on improving in both of these areas and would really appreciate your support in ensuring your children are both punctual in their arrival and, whenever possible, attend school on a regular, daily basis. Despite it being difficult for them to get up in the mornings the children will thank you for it when they rebuild relationships, enjoy a short play before school with their friends, and are able to join effectively in the morning sessions. Thank you for your ongoing cooperation Father’s Day Stall On Thursday 31st and Friday 1st September GWPS Fundraising subcommittee will be holding a stall for students to purchase a gift for dad, Grandad, a special friend at the Father’s Day Stall . Gifts are priced between $1.00-$5.00. We would appreciate any volunteers to help set up and run the stall. If you are able to assist please contact the office or speak to Gayle. 2018 Orientation Sessions 2018 Orientation Foundation dates for your interest: If you know of anyone who has a child eligible to begin school in 2018, please pass on our Orientation sessions. Thursday 7/9 at 9-11am Term 4 CHESS Dear Parents/carers, CHESS is to be introduced as an extra -curricular subject in Term 4. Enrolment Places for 2018 The demand for places at Glenroy West Primary School and kindergarten is high. Enrolment forms are located on the school website or alternatively an enrolment form can be obtained from the school office. School Tours School Tours are conducted on Tuesday and Thursday from 9.15am. If these days are not suitable we can arrange an alternate day and time for your convenience. A personalised tour with the school principal Pam Streete can be arranged at your request. Please arrange a suitable day and time via the office staff with Anita or Rita.

Absences When your child is absent or late to school we are required to present a reason for the absence to the Department of Education DET. You are welcome to write a note to the class teacher brought to school by your child on their return. There are other avenues you can use to inform us of your child’s absence. A phone call or an email to the school email, glenroywest.ps@edumail.vic.gov.au or lodge on COMPASS. It is very important that children attend school daily except if they are unwell or in extreme circumstances. We know that every day at school counts! There are a few bugs around again and as winter approaches we can expect more. Our teachers also get sick from time to time and need time away. It is just as important that a teacher does not come to school sick, as it is for a child. Please explain to your child that this is part of life and the school will cover the grade internally or with a replacement teacher who will operate the teacher’s program. Thank you for your understanding. EVERY DAY COUNTS- ATTENDANCE IT’S NOT OK TO BE AWAY.EVERY DAY COUNTS We are presently reviewing our processes for daily attendance and ‘lateness.’ DID YOU KNOW YOUR CHILD’S BEST LEARNING TIME IS THE START OF THE SCHOOL DAY? THAT’S WHEN EVERY MINUTE COUNTS THE MOST! It is very important to receive notification from parents or guardians when children are absent from school as we have an accountability to the Department of Education. At Glenroy West Primary School we are committed to providing your child with an excellent education. The building blocks of an excellent education begins with all students coming to school each and every day. Regular school attendance is vital and missing school days can have a big impact on a child’s future. Missing one day a fortnight will equate to missing four full weeks by the end of the year. My name is Anne Kyriacou and I have been at Glenroy West Primary School since 2014 as a Leading Teacher. I have several roles at the school as Literacy Coach, Literacy Intervention and administration across the school. I am a Literacy intervention teacher working in small groups with students assigned after school ‘reading data’ is analysed. The students identified require extra support to build on reading and comprehension strategies and are taught by me three times a week. I also provide and assist teachers with intervention strategies that they can use with students in the classroom. My other role is as a curriculum coach. I work with teachers to build on their professional knowledge and extend their teaching strategies around the Victorian English Curriculum. My role, as Leading Teacher is to support and coach teacher’s in their practice to improve student learning outcomes across the school. In 2017 Glenroy West Primary School experienced excellent results in NAPLAN in Reading and Maths and we would like to continue to maintain this tremendous achievement through supporting both our students and our staff. My name is Vicki King and I work as a Curriculum Coach and also in Literacy Intervention for the Year 1 and 2 students. Throughout 2017 I have worked with all teachers at GWPS as a coach. My role is to work collaboratively with the teachers to build their classroom practice ensuring that the range of student learning needs are met. Teachers at GWPS work with the data we collect (through a variety of assessments), to analyse the needs of their students and to develop and implement programs that ensure high quality teaching and learning for all students. In May this year the Year 3 and Year 5 students participated in the NAPLAN testing. The students undertook testing in the areas of; Reading, Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, Statistics and Probability, Spelling and Grammar and Punctuation. The results the students achieved show great improvement and are of a very high standard. The Year 3 students performed better than the standard for the state in all of the areas assessed with particularly high results in Statistics and Probability and Number and Algebra. The Year 5 students were equal to the standard for the state in Reading and Number and Algebra but were marginally lower than the state standard in the other areas. The staff are currently working on the analysis of the data from the NAPLAN testing. This work will enable teachers to target their teaching to the needs of the students in their classes so we can continue to improve the learning for all of our students. In my role for Literacy Intervention I work with students who are identified as requiring extra support with reading and comprehension strategies. I work with groups of students three times a week and I also work with the teachers of these students to assist them to implement intervention strategies that will further improve the progress of both these students and all students in their class. As mentioned in previous newsletters, Glenroy West Primary School is committed to Child Safety. As a

community we want children to be safe, happy and empowered. We support and respect all children, as

well as our staff and volunteers. We are committed to the safety, participation and empowerment of all

children. There is zero tolerance of child abuse, and all allegations and safety concerns will be treated very

seriously and consistently with our robust policies and procedures. We meet our legal and moral

obligations to contact authorities when we are worried about a child’s safety, which we follow rigorously.

Glenroy West Primary School is committed to preventing child abuse and identifying risks early, and

removing and reducing these risks.

As a community we support and respect all children, as well as our staff and volunteers

There have now been new regulations around Working with Children Checks and we are proactive by

ensuring that community members who work with children have a Working With Children Check.

Additionally, we expect all volunteers, contractors, trainee teachers and visitors to the school to read

the Child Code of Conduct when they sign in. This is a requirement to ensure we are always looking

out for the best interests and safety of all our children.

Below is the Child Safe Code of Conduct which has been posted on the school’s web page since last

year alongside the Child Safe Policy and our commitment to a child safe environment.

Glenroy West Primary School is committed to the safety and wellbeing of children and young people. Our school

community recognises the importance of, and a responsibility for, ensuring our school is a safe, supportive and

enriching environment which respects and fosters the dignity and self-esteem of children and young people, and

enables them to thrive in their learning and development.

This Code of Conduct aims to protect children and reduce any opportunities for child abuse or harm to occur. It

also assists in understanding how to avoid or better manage risky behaviours and situations. It is intended to

complement child protection legislation, Department policy, school policies and procedures and professional

standards, codes or ethics as these apply to staff and other personnel.

The Principal and school leaders of Glenroy West Primary School will support implementation and monitoring

of the Code of Conduct, and will plan, implement and monitor arrangements to provide inclusive, safe and orderly

schools and other learning environments. The Principal and school leaders of Glenroy West Primary School will

also provide information and support to enable the Code of Conduct to operate effectively.

All staff, contractors, volunteers and any other member of the school community involved in child-related work are

required to comply with the Code of Conduct by observing expectations for appropriate behaviour below. The

Code of Conduct applies in all school situations, including school camps and in the use of digital technology and

social media.

CHESS LESSONS – TERM 4

Dear Parents/ Guardians, In Term 4, we will be offering CHESS lessons on Wednesdays from week one to week ten at a total cost of $50.00 for the ten sessions, payable in advance. A qualified CHESS teacher, Simon Andre will be providing the lessons for students in grades 2 to 5. To secure your position the $50.00 term fee is payable by Friday 15th September 2017. As we are holding the fee payable on behalf of the CHESS tutoring company we can only accept cash, NO EFTPOS, Cheques or CSEF are available through the school for CHESS. If you would like your child to participate, complete the permission below and ensure the payment of $50.00 is made by the closing date of Friday 15th September as places are limited and positions are secured in order of receipt.
