ABSENCES When your child is absent or late to school we are required to present a reason for the absence to the Department of Education DET. You are welcome to write a note to the class teacher brought to school by your child on their return. There are other avenues you can use to inform us of your child’s absence. A phone call or an email to the school email, [email protected] . It is very important that children attend school daily except if they are unwell or in extreme circumstances. We know that every day at school counts! COMMUNICATIONS BETWEEN TEACHING STAFF AND PARENTS PLEASE MAKE AN APPOINTMENT We welcome open communication between our teaching staff and our school community. However, we would like to courteously remind parents/carers to make appointments for meetings with classroom teachers. It is respectfully requested that issues of serious concern are not addressed with our classroom teachers prior to school commencement or late after school. Instead any serious issues need to be directed to the Assistant Principal or Leading Teachers. Team Leaders are also available to assist as well. Foundation- Two Ms Luke and Grades 3-6- Mrs. Mendham. Our teachers need to be calm and focused on our students and their learning at the start of the school day. A meeting will be arranged for you with your child’s teacher, if necessary, at a more suitable time in a confidential setting. Thank you for your support. ENROLMENT PLACES FOR 2018 The demand for places at Glenroy West Primary School and kindergarten is high. Enrolment forms are located on the school website or alternatively an enrolment form can be obtained from the school office. School Tours are conducted on Tuesday and Thursday from 9.15am. If these days are not suitable we can arrange an alternate day and time for your convenience. A personalised tour with the school principal Pam Streete can be arranged at your request. Please arrange a suitable day and time via the office staff with Anita or Rita. PRIEMERS READING CHALLENGE Australia’s premiers have launched the reading challenge for 2017. We hope parents will encourage their children to read as many books as possible. Children reading daily is one of the most effective ways to improve their overall academic development. Further information will be forwarded to parents and students.

EVERY DAY COUNTS- ATTENDANCE IT’S NOT OK TO BE AWAY.EVERY DAY COUNTS We are presently reviewing our processes for daily attendance and ‘lateness.’ DID YOU KNOW YOUR CHILD’S BEST LEARNING TIME IS THE STRAT OF THE SCHOOL DAY? THAT’S WHEN EVERY MINUTE COUNTS THE MOST! It is very important to receive notification from parents or guardians when children are absent from school as we have an accountability to the Department of Education. Please use the following methods to inform us and include your child’s name and grade, date and reason for the absence.

Phone in

Written note

Speak directly to the Classroom teacher. Teachers have a Duty of Care to call parents

if a child is absent more than 2 days.

Respond to text message

At Glenroy West Primary School we are committed to providing your child with an excellent education. The building blocks of an excellent education begins with all students coming to school each and every day. Regular school attendance is vital and missing school days can have a big impact on a child’s future. Missing one day a fortnight will equate to missing four full weeks by the end of the year. Each day a student misses school puts them behind and can affect their educational outcomes. Some of the reasons for student absence at GWPS

Staying home to celebrate a birthday

Going shopping

Looking after a sibling

Spending time with a relative

Extended weekends

Overseas travel

Dental and medical appointment

Illness

If for any reason your child must be absent from school, parents or guardians are required to provide written notification, stating the reason for their child’s absence. This information will be retained by the teacher and archived by the school. This is a DET requirement. Please be aware from March 1st 2014, new federal government laws will mean that parents can be fined for not sending students to school without an acceptable reason. If you are having attendance issues with your child, please inform your child’s teacher so we can work together to get your child to school every day.

Camps, Sport and Excursion Fund (CSEF) application close 23rd June, 2017. Families holding a valid means-tested concession card or temporary foster parents are eligible to apply for $125 for eligible primary school students to attend camps, sports and excursions. If you haven’t already applied for 2017, do so as soon as possible, but before the closing date of 23/06/2017.

SAFETY REMINDERS- USING THE SUPERVISED CROSSING A reminder to cross the road at the school crossing at all times please. We would like to remind parents the importance of modelling safe walking practices by using the school patrolled or pedestrian crossing. Parents and children darting across busy York Street can be very distressing for drivers and sends a poor message to children about road safety. In the interests of your children and others driving in and around the school please cross where there is a school crossing for safety reasons. The school crossing is supervised before and after school in your best interests. Kind regards, Have a wonderful week, Pamela Streete Principal ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
