LDCSB SOCIAL WORK CORNER

NEVER BE LATE FOR SCHOOL AGAIN!

Everyone runs late sometimes. Life happens and plans do not always work out as we want. Occasional lateness is not the end of the world. Chronic lateness, however is a different situation. It may be a symptom of chaos and disrupted routines.

Children hate being late for school, even though they may not appeared bothered by the prospect at 7:45 a.m., while they’re still in p.j.’s watching YouTube on their iPod.

Although parents need their children’s co-operation, lateness is a parenting matter. With a few changes to your morning routine, lateness can become a thing of the past.

Impact of Lateness Research about lateness reports that students missing even 10% of their school year due to lateness are at higher risk of dropping out and earning lower grades.

Children who arrive late for school are stressed. They have trouble settling in and their day is off to a bad start (especially if the car ride to school was tense). Chronic late arrivers feel the criticism of their peers and teacher who deal with the daily disruption to the start of the day.

Psychologist Dr. David Grand, expert in peak performance believes that self-beliefs influence your child’s ability to strive for their best performance. Children who experience chronic lateness may develop self-beliefs of shame, “I am bad” and “I can’t do it”. These can contribute to your child avoiding or escaping everyday expectations.

5 TIPS TO MAKE LATENESS A THING OF THE PAST!

• Reduce/Eliminate Distractions: Screens (of all kinds) are the number one contributor to avoidance and escape. Without exception, eliminating screens will have immediate positive effects. If parents wish to use screen time as a reward, avoid rewarding in the morning. Screens are not for mornings.

• Load time: Mary Caroline Walker, author of todaysbalancedmom.com suggests parents include LOAD TIME to their morning routine. The time to move children from point A to B can take 5-15 minutes, often just the amount of time that can cause families to be late.

• No lick and a promise: Discourage your child from using the morning to complete yesterday’s homework and projects. Besides using up precious morning minutes, this habit encourages minimal effort and concentration. Allow your child to face the natural consequences of showing up for school without completed work.

• Sleep: We all need adequate sleep to function at our peak. If you cannot get up with your alarm, you are not getting enough sleep; your children may also be lacking in enough sleep to buy into a morning routine. Reasonable bedtime with calming routines can make a big difference to the kind of morning you will have together!

• The Big Yellow Bus: If you are fortunate to have access to school bus transportation, use it. Children who ride the bus are never late!
