Medieval Re-enactment
The year was 1286 when King D. Dinis granted a charter county to the village of Porches. The reception
for the king‟s representatives and the feast celebrating the new administrative status were the motives for
an unprecedented medieval parade held at the International School of the Algarve, in early April.
The initiative came from the Drama students of Year 8 of the National Section under the guidance of
teacher Ana Luísa Salgado. The project turned out to involve the entire school community in a great
celebration of colour, with period costumes, dances and stalls with food for free in exchange for correct
answers on subjects taught in class. It was a magical return to the past and an enriching experience

Science Fair
Scientific Investigations
The Science Department, once again organised
the Science Fair at the International School of
the Algarve. The event took place on the 3rd
and 4th April and presented several experiments
stations in various areas including Physics,
Chemistry, Optics, Electricity and others.
The Science Fair involved the whole school community, including parents, and was this year visited, for
the first time, by the students from our Espiche (Lagos) site. Students had the opportunity to
participate in various scientific experiments all of them duly explained by teachers and older students.
The younger students observed the effects of some scientific concepts learned in the classroom
environment. The results of the experiments caused moments of great fun as the game of coloured
lights or the shock of cold in a heated tin. The older students had the opportunity to present specially
designed projects for the fair as was the case of an hydraulic crane. They also took control of
experiments, allowing them to consolidate their acquired knowledge.

Lecture on Bullying, with Tânia Paias, in Loulé
Lecture on Divorce, with Bárbara Figueiredo, in Albufeira
Pedagogical Lectures
Divorce and Bullying
In March and April, the International School of
the Algarve held pedagogical lectures in Albufeira
and Loulé. On 28th March we invited PhD
Bárbara Figueiredo, from the University of
Minho, to talk about divorce at a session held in
the Grand Hall of the „Câmara Municipal de
Albufeira‟. On the 30th April we held a
conference at the Municipal Library in Loulé on
the topic of Bullying, with Dr Tânia Paias,
founder and director of the „Bullying Portal‟.
'Divorce: A Family Transition' was the title
chosen by Bárbara Figueiredo for the conference
in Albufeira. An Associate Professor at the
University of Minho, Bárbara Figueiredo
dedicated her work to research and intervention
in family matters, with recent studies on the
issue of divorce, a phenomenon that has tripled
in Portugal between 1990 and 2010, and its
strong impact on children's lives.
In Albufeira, Bárbara Figueiredo spoke of „Divorce‟ as a process with specific steps that must be met in
order to reduce negative effects on family life, particularly in children. In Loulé, we returned to the
topic Bullying, which we also discussed in Lagoa, in January 2013. This time we invited Dra. Tânia Paias,
who presented her latest book on the subject, „Tenho Medo de Ir à Escola‟ ('I'm Afraid to Go to
School'), based on cases that the author had observed. The occasion also served for the presentation
of the first study by students of the International School of the Algarve on the phenomenon of Bullying.
Fernando Branco Correia

Professor Fernando Branco Correia, from the
University of Évora, visited the International

attended the lecture. They were completely
captivated by the knowledge and good
communication skills of the guest speaker.

Luísa Ducla Soares Visiting Author
Luísa Ducla Soares, author of a number of
children's books visited the International
School of the Algarve on the 28th April for a
lecture and autograph session with our
students of the four years of the „1º Ciclo‟.
Luísa Ducla Soares has 134 published books
and several texts included in the Portuguese
manuals of all the four years of the „1º
Ciclo‟.
Our students proved to have a good knowledge of the
authors work and showed an interest in learning more.
Luísa Ducla Soares answered all the questions with great
humour. She revealed, for example, that she wrote her first
book at the age of 10 and never published it. “Why do you
write for children?”, they asked. “Because it combines two
passions that I have: children and writing”, she replied.

International School of the Algarve

namely France, England, Italy, Spain and Portugal.
These countries along with Germany were the subject of an exhibition that was shown in the
