School Newsletter 2016 Term 4 Week 3 Welcome to this edition of our school newsletter. At this point in time we have had three classes complete their Wellington camp, two due to return tomorrow, and our last camp goes next week. It is with some pride that I can comment on the behaviour of our students. I have had reports from parents and from teachers about the behaviour of other schools compared to our children and I must say, I know exactly which school I would rather be associated with. Whilst we may have our ups and downs, the public behaviour of our children when on school organised activities is a real credit to themselves, to our families and to our staff. The number of very positive comments I have heard reflect the values we try to encourage at Kirkwood. Thank you to all who make this a reality. Last week, with the support of the Board of Trustees, I was able to attend the National Conference of the New Zealand Association of Intermediate and Middle Schooling in Whakatane. It was a really worthwhile time, with many world class speakers covering many issues that are affecting our children and our schools. I particularly enjoyed listening to Andrew Lines, an Australian who is developing a programme designed to better inform children about the progression to adult hood and what it means to be a good man or woman. He talked a lot about children taking responsibility for themselves from a young age his children were responsible for washing their own clothes from 9 years old. As he said, children nowadays can use smart phones, so they should be able to use a washing machine. He did also say that his son learnt why you shouldn’t mix white clothes with coloured clothes when his cricket gear turned pink! His main point was that children learn through making mistakes and taking responsibility for these a valuable point I believe. The conference was also entertained by Tame Iti, someone who I knew of, but only through the media. His presentation was honest and full of humour I certainly have a very different impression of him now than I did, and it made me think of how we allow the media to form our opinions something we should be talking with our children about. I think the main learning I came back with though, is how we can set people and institutions up to fail. Schools are being asked to cover more and more in today’s environment – and I think of our obligations towards te reo me tikanga Māori Māori language and culture. Teachers are being asked to help keep alive and enhance concepts, skills and language that they have had little or no training for. If we are serious as a country about our bi-cultural heritage and how important it is to us, we should be providing more training for our teachers. And yet, there is no money to do this. Perhaps this is a debate to be held at a national level hopefully soon. There are many things happening between now and the end of the year. I hope you will be able to support the PTA by attending the quiz evening, or by buying tickets for their raffle. I also hope you will consider buying one of the school’s cook books. I have just seen the proof for it, and it looks really good I know what my family will be getting for Christmas! Thank you for your on-going support of our school. It is much valued and appreciated. Best wishes Phil Tappenden Principal

Our competition for the home made chocolate chip biscuits for the class that collects the most has been fierce, we will let you know the results when tallied.

Thank You

A lady who happened to be travelling home in the same train carriage as our pupils phoned our school to congratulate the students on having such lovely manners and being very well behaved. This lady happened to be a pupil at Kirkwood Intermediate 45 years ago and mentioned that she was extremely proud of that fact, especially when seeing such well-behaved pupils representing the school today.

Kahikatea & Kai The development of our school cookbook Kahikatea & Kai is in its final stages. The proof has been collected read and tweaked so it is ready to be sent to the printers next week. Our aim is to have it on sale by mid-November in time for the quiz night. It is full of easy to make family favourites, which I am sure this will make it a favourite to use as a Christmas stocking filler for friends and family. A big thank you to those who contributed recipes and to our student committee for all their hard work.

Congratulations Molly Congratulations to Molly, who represented Canterbury at the recent Trampolining competition in Invercargill. She gained 4th in the double mini and 5th in trampolining. She also competed in the synchronised trampolining, together with her team buddy, and came 1st overall. Well done Molly! Last week, Molly flew to Napier where she will compete in the Indo Pacific Trampoline and Tumbling Competition.

Indoor Sports Tournament Last week on Tuesday 18 & Wednesday 19 October, we had a number of teams participate in the Indoor Sports Tournament. The teams we had representing Kirkwood were the Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball, Badminton, Table Tennis, and Volleyball. Below are photos of the Volleyball and Basketball teams.

YHA Accommodation At the YHA it was very interesting and we all had to obey the rules. The rooms were of reasonable size on the fourth floor and most included a spacious ensuite. When we were allowed to use our key cards to enter we found there were no towels, so as a result, Mr Aitken had to hire 29 towels! Being in charge of our rooms and beds was difficult for most as the majority of us were used to having our mums run around after us. On the second night at the hostel we had a home cooked meal of spaghetti bolognese. We were extremely lucky because we had Mrs Anderson as our chef! On the last night at the hostel we had pizza! As there were so many of us, there was about 19 pizzas! After pizza, we watched ‘Fantastic 4 #2’ in the television lounge. It was really cool as there were sofas and beanbags and we ate popcorn whilst watching the movie! Overall, the hostel was amazing and provided a really good environment to stay in! By Jacinda

Wellington Zoo We arrived at the zoo on a bus from Zealandia and hurried inside to get out of the rain. The automatic door kept opening because we filled the space right up. Then Toni (the educator) came and brought us through the gift shop and back out into the rain. Everyone hurried into the education centre and sat down. Toni talked about what zoos do to help animals. Once she finished she brought us outside to see some animals like some monkeys and the kea, it’s a good thing it stopped raining! She took us around and showed us kiwis, chimpanzee’s, monkeys, lemurs, kea’s and penguins. She talked about how they bring penguins from all around New Zealand to be operated on by their vet. After that she let us explore the zoo. Heshan and I went in search of the lions. We found the lion’s area but we couldn’t see them at first, until one roared and Drew ran away screaming. Then we visited the giraffes in their small enclosure, they were busy eating lucerne minding their own business. After that Heshan, myself and a small group went into the Australian habitat and played with the wallabies. It was time to go once we left the Australian habitat, but on the way out we had a chance to go to the gift shop for souvenirs. By Cameron

Capital E One of the things we did in Wellington was go to Capital E. Capital E is a studio that provides kids with the opportunity to create not only an awesome 3D movie, but also a news programme based on Parliament and the Bee Hive. The news programme was called Eye On the Hive. Everyone in the class had a job, from a Graphic Artist, to a Presenter, we even had a Director. In the studio there were four rooms, one of them was a dressing room, one was the control room, another was a green screen room where the interviews and reports happen, then there was the room where the presenters were filmed. Capital E is a great programme as it allows children to have a look at TV production as a career. I definitely learnt something. Overall, I really enjoyed Capital E. I also found it very interesting and would recommend it to anyone who is looking at TV production as a career. By Lily

Parliament Visit On the third day of camp Room 3 visited Parliament. As soon as we got to Parliament, Ben, (our instructor) talked to us about the rules that have to be followed and told us a little bit about Parliament before we headed through the front foyer doors. Before entering parliament, we had to go through security to make sure we weren’t carrying anything that could harm someone. We then put our bags into the storage room and waited for the next instructions. Ben took us into a sitting room and told us a bit more about parliament before taking us into the education room. The education room was set up to be a replica of a debating room so we could get the feel of what the debating room looked like before we went there. We had a discussion about the places you can be in parliament and who you can work for. We watched a video that helped us understand parliament more which was narrated by a Year 8 student! Once we were finished in the education room we walked around parliament into several different meeting rooms, suffragette room, the real debating room and the massive “lounge”. Unfortunately, we could not sit on the seats in the debating room because you had to be “MP”, but we did have a debate in the Suffragette room about banning fireworks! We found out an interesting fact that a law can take 6 months to become an actual law in New Zealand; it takes so long. We then walked back down to the storage room to get our bags and a one of a kind Parliament bracelet. Parliament was so awesome to go and see and there was so much to learn! By Jessie

Zealandia When we arrived at Zealandia we learnt about all the different birds in English and Māori. We also learnt about the other things we were going to see like the weta and tuatara. After we learnt about all the different birds we had to find them in the sanctuary.

We found all sorts of birds such as Wood Pigeon, Bellbird, Takahe and a Tui. We also saw live weta and we all had a chance to pat a tuatara. We had an enjoyable time trying to figure out what each bird was. At the end we watched a short film on what has happened to New Zealand in the last thousands of years.

We would like to thank the instructors who helped us understand all the different things that all the birds do. We would also like to thank all the staff at Zealandia for making it possible for us to come, it was very enjoyable and we all loved the experience. By Jayden

Transport to and from Camp Plane

I arrived at the airport at about 8:40am, Mum parked the car and we made our way down to the ground floor. I spotted about 15 kids in green near one of the entrances and joined them saying goodbye to Mum. We then went and found Mr Aitken. We handed in our phones and once everyone was here we lined up and got our boarding pass at the front desks. Then one by one we put our carry-on luggage onto the conveyer belts. We had to wait a while before boarding the plane. There was hardly any turbulence and overall it was a nice flight. We got off the plane once it had landed, and collected our carry-on luggage from the carousel. We walked outside and found the bus waiting for us, we got on and went to the YHA (Youth Hostel Association).

Ferry

On Friday, the bus took us from the Youth Hostel to the harbour at about 7:40am and we got there at about 8:00am. We lined up and put our carry-on luggage onto a conveyer belt at a front desk and went to the waiting area where we waited. At about 9:30am we boarded the ferry and went and sat in a lounge. The Ferry ride itself wasn't bumpy until we got to the Cook Strait where it became a little bumpy. About three times we were allowed to go out on deck with a teacher. As we got closer to Picton Harbour the scenery changed from endless sea to hills. We got off the Ferry at about 12:45pm and waited to board the train.

Train

We boarded the train at about 1;15pm and we were seated in carriage C, During the train ride we were allowed to visit the cafe with a Teacher or parents’ consent. There were about three trips to the observation deck which were accompanied by an adult. The scenery from the observation deck was amazing even though it was a miserable rainy day. We arrived at the Train station at about 5:45pm, collected our carry-on luggage and went home with our families. By Brooke

Wellington Camp – Room 2 On Tuesday,18 October, Room 2 was at the airport ready to fly. Soon we were at the hostel in Wellington. We were constantly busy, but always having fun. Some of our highlights were – Capital E, Wellington Zoo, Rock Climbing and of course the pizza and movie night. The trip back home was interesting, especially the ferry ride. Some people thought the giant waves were awesome, others just felt sick. But all in all I think everyone had a good time. By Amelie
