Love in Action Everyone has a need for close relationships. God created us as

social, emotional beings: We thrive in healthy friendships and find

great fulfillment there. One important aspect of friendship is trust.

This week at school devotion, we talked about the importance of

being a trustworthy friend and having people in our lives that we

can trust. A good friend has many qualities - they are someone you

can be close to and honest with, someone you share your ups and

downs with, someone who you talk with, listen to, and rely on. A

good friendship is always a two-way street: talking and listening,

giving and receiving, loving and being loved. One of the greatest

skills we can develop for being a good friend is being trustworthy.

Learning to live with integrity and keep our promises will show

others that we can be trusted and will help us build special

friendships.

Bible Verse: 1 Corinthians 13:7

Love is always supportive, loyal, hopeful and trusting.

Weekly Well-being Mistakes can be GOOD!!!!

Let’s face it, we all make mistakes. Often when we make mistakes,

we have a negative emotional reaction. While it’s obviously

important to get things correct, messing up doesn’t have to be

wrong. Making mistakes allows us to learn and develop. When we

make a mistake, we can identify what went wrong and this helps

us correct the process for next time. Making mistakes allows for

growth and development. So next time you make a mistake,

pause, reflect and learn.

From the Principal As we move towards the end of this first semester, our classes are continuing to stay focussed. It is always a

busy time for teachers as they prepare progress reports for each child. We invite you to request an interview with

your child’s class teacher in Week 10 to discuss your child’s journey. Many parents meet at regular intervals with

teachers to discuss areas in which their child may be experiencing difficulty or ways to assist and support them

at home. Partnering together with the school demonstrates an interest in your child’s academic progress. There

are many studies that support the theory that student outcomes are enhanced by strong family-school

partnerships. We thank our parent community for the continued ways you work with our staff in a respectful and

collaborative manner.

Staffing Update - This week we farewell Mrs Sherryn Rowe who has been working in the Year 4 classes over

this term. We really appreciate the work she has done with the students and wish her and her family every

blessing as they head back ‘home’ to WA. Mrs Erin Gale will work each Monday in Year 4P alongside Mrs

Paynter and Mrs Kotzur will teach full time going forward.

Reading, Reading, Reading! - You would all be aware that our Queen of Dress Ups (AKA Mrs T) always

encourages our students to read every day. I know many class teachers also offer a daily quiet reading time in

class - often after lunch break. This is not to be seen as just a time to cool down (although it does help) but we

all know that regular reading can set children up for success in so many areas. One site I was on recently listed

these benefits for daily reading: increases intellectual capability, increases imagination, builds vocabulary,

provides opportunity to explore various emotions, aids sleep and reduces stress. It even went as far as to add

that reading also alleviates depression and lengthens lifespan! I am unsure how they have ‘measured’ the

lengthening lifespan fact, but I will believe it if it gives me an excuse to lose myself in a good book more often, so

I choose to believe this fact. Sharing books together - yes even with our teenage children - can be a time away

from screens, and a time to reconnect and discuss issues or themes within the books. We know books have a

high priority in many homes given the wonderful support at the recent Book Fair. Mrs T will be able to use the

commission from this to keep our library shelves filled with quality literature. I encourage you all to find a good

book and read, read, read!

School Reminders and Information School Fees - School Fees accounts have been posted home to all families. Term 2 school fees are due for

payment by this Friday, the 4th of June.

Winter Colds & Flu - If students are sick, we ask parents to please keep them at home. Many viruses are highly

contagious, and it is important that we try and stop the spread of sickness through the classrooms. Please

contact the office or use the app to advise if your students are unwell.

Drop and Go Safety - Where possible, we ask parents to please stay in your car at Drop and Go, to ensure the

line flows smoothly. Please ensure children enter and exit the car on the passenger side so that they do not walk

out onto the road. Staff will help supervise this process in the afternoons.

School Event – Information St John’s Sampling Secondary Open Day - Come to our Sampling Secondary Open Day to experience a day

in the life of a Year 7 student at St John's and discover what makes our Junior Secondary school different. All

current Year 6 students will have the opportunity to attend practical classes including Agriculture, Design and

Technology, Music, Media Studies and Japanese. Year 6 students from other schools are also welcome to

attend. Student activities will run from 8:45am to 3:00pm. Parent information sessions will be held at 10am,

12pm and 5pm. To make a booking please visit St John’s Sampling Secondary Open Day Booking Link or message the school via Facebook. We look forward to seeing you there!

Primary Snippets Year 6 have been busy in HASS this term creating memory boxes and trenches from the World Wars. Students

put themselves in the soldier’s shoes presenting snapshots of their daily life in diary and diorama form.

National Virtual Debating - 6L participated in their very first debate in the NGS National Virtual Debating

competition. The topic for the debate was that every household should be limited to one car. The team

presented three solid arguments as to why this should be the case. Their opposition was Yarranlea State School

in Brisbane. The students all enjoyed a chat whilst they waited for the adjudicators feedback, which was fun. The

adjudicator provided excellent advice that the students can build on for future debates. Their next debate is

about banning domestic cats in Australia. They are learning to work as a team as they prepare debates and to

think on their feet as they formulate rebuttals during the debate. Congratulations to Olivia Coulson, Levi

Steinhardt, Lachan Stallwood and Josh Aitken for surviving your first debate. Best of luck to Lincoln Norris and

Jakob Brown who will join Livvy and Josh in the next debate.

Secondary Snippets Kahoot Challenge: Congratulations to Cameron from Boondooma for finally knocking Charisse off top spot, but

she was not far behind in second. Nicole from Wivenhoe gained third place. So again, the place getters were

spread across the houses and grades. Reuben, Heath, Nyaon and Casey also attained 100%.

The house points are as follows:

Somerset: 43

Wivenhoe: 33

Boondooma: 28

APEX Debating - The next debate for the APEX competition will be held at Kingaroy State High on Wednesday

the 9th of June. Students have their topic and details of the debate and should be working on preparing this.

Study Time - Junior Secondary students and Year 6 Debating students may attend Study Time from 7:45am

every Thursday in L2. Mrs Roberts and Mrs Springhall are there to aid. If you are struggling to keep up with

assessment tasks or work that you miss due to absences- come along.

Year 7 History - We enjoyed some fantastic presentations about aspects of ancient

Roman life from Year 7 students this week. We watched an ancient Roman Cooking Show

and feasted on delicious cakes made by several students. We saw a model ballista in

action, held a trident and viewed detailed models of the Colosseum, one was even made

using Minecraft. I was intrigued to view an ancient Roman medical kit with many remedies

that we still use today, and some that we do not- such as the cow liver dipped in honey.

Many of the students created a Kahoot for students to participate in to check if they were

listening. It was a great week where the students became the teachers.

Secondary Student Referees/Umpires - A big shout out to some of our secondary school students who were

referees/umpires at the Primary School Winter Carnival on Friday. Amelia Lonsdale, Emia Jorgensen, Charisse

Dizon, Casey Springhall, Nyaon Twang, Milla Brown and Aimee Price all umpired netball, and Briar Steinhardt

refereed touch football. We received lots of positive feedback about their efforts and how they represented our

school. Well done!

Brisbane Kokoda Challenge 2021

This is our first year of sending teams to the Brisbane Kokoda Challenge, they have been training hard to make

sure they are ready to go! Our teams will be competing in either the 30km or 15km event through the Brisbane

hinterlands this Saturday, the 5th of June. Just so you don’t think we are just going for a leisurely stroll, the 30km

course has over 1500m of elevation – more than the height of the Bunya Mountains from sea level!

We have two teams competing in the 30km open event - “Boyz to Men” with Mr Moseling, Mr Landherr, Sam

Moseling and Will Landherr and the “Grit Girls” with Mrs Lou Brown, Milla Brown, Nicole Gunston and Kate

Gadischke. We also have two teams competing in the 15km event - “Triple J” with Mrs Felicity Jorgensen,

Christian Jorgensen and Amelia Jorgensen and “Team Eckart” with Mrs Belinda Eckart, Ava Eckart, Rachel

Stern and Breana Freeman. The fundraising between all of the teams has raised almost $2500 which will go

towards the Kokoda Youth Foundation. This foundation supports teen mental health and wellbeing. If you would

like to donate to any of the teams, please find their page link on the school Facebook page.

Sporting News (Cont.) Primary Winter Carnival - It was great to have the Primary Winter Carnival back! Our Year 4's to 6's

participated in the carnival last Friday in netball, soccer, touch football and basketball. From all accounts, they

had a great time competing, showed wonderful sportsmanship, and achieved some good results as well.

A big thank you to the four venues and convenors for hosting and running each of the events. Thank you as well

to all the high school refs and umpires from KSHS, St John's, St Mary's and Yarraman SS, they did a great job!

Mr Springa and Mrs Litzow and her team did a great job preparing the touch fields and running the canteen,

thank you!
