ACADEMIC REPORT

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

Student learning and improvement is consistently at the forefront of our minds here at Tauranga Intermediate. Within the last couple of newsletters we have drawn reference to the importance of learning partnerships and the role that you as parents and families play in these partnerships.

In Week nine we will be holding our first learning conferences for the year. This will be another opportunity for the learning partnerships between your child, their classroom teacher and yourself to be consolidated. More information about these conferences will come in a fortnight’s time. This information will include ways in which you can ensure you as parents/caregivers are well informed about your child’s learning.

Below we have attached a section from an Education Review Office pamphlet that supports parents with understanding how your child is doing and questions you can ask to become more involved in their learning. Please take the time to read through it. You can access the entire pamphlet at:

http://www.ero.govt.nz/Review-Process/For-Parents/ERO-Guides-for-Parents/How-is-my-child-doing-Questions-to-ask-at-school

Dates to take note of are:

• Thursday 4th April – Learning Conferences

Warm regards

Gareth Scholes – Academic Deputy Principal ([email protected])

TAURANGA INTERMEDIATE STUDENTS SELECTED AS TOP WRITERS IN NATIONAL COMPETITION

In early December 2012 students of Totara House crafted and published short stories for a national writing competition entitled ʻBeyond This Ageʼ. The brief asked students to write between 500 - 750 words or less on a speculative fiction theme, our students sent in stories of space, dragons, villains, heroes, aliens and horror. Over the holidays the stories were judged, and recently the school was notified that 12 of our students had been selected as winners. The 12 winning stories from Tauranga Intermediate students will appear in an anthology including the best writing from the national competition. The book also given the name Beyond This Age, will be published by Oceanbooks and launched in Tauranga, during NZ Book Month (this month).

The judge for the Year 7 writing was Anna Mackenzie, writer of seven novels for children and winner of many notable book awards. Anna selected Helena Andrews of Tauranga Intermediate as her final winner. Her story Trapped, tells the reader of an encounter with a mermaid. “Itʼs a story that is deceptively simple, reality and mystery neatly interwoven to give us a thoroughly satisfying conclusion,” said Anna. Totara House Students Selected as Top Writers in National Competition

The following Taurnaga Intermediate Students - eleven students - have also had their work selected to be published in the anthology:

Isabella Blanshard for The TeleporterHarry Clarke for World War IIIRyan Holt for The UnknownEthan Kilsby for Wondrous ExploringSevern MacLeod Gore for ThievesRyan Kite for Falling StarsDanielle Meenagh for GravityLara Rasmussen for HeatSasha Tanner for The HealerMadeline Thompson for CharletKieran von Holstein-Rathlou for The Christmas Dragon

This is an outstanding achievement.
